  1. The latest 40 has a great thrashy sound file, but it needs a lot doing to it to get it up to scratch. Whilst I enjoy that sort of thing, the class really deserves a new model, especially given the sheer number of variations. The CADs for the KR one just aren't up to scratch yet, but I'm in market for a retooled Bachmann or new Accurascale one to go with the detailed Bachmann ones.
  2. Just needed 2 or 3 applications to bulk it up. I've attempted to do the seam around the lower cab roof sections of my Class 81 project by masking off the bottom 1mm, but it needed 3 or 4 coats before it stood out sufficiently.
  3. The 2 I've got and the 3 on preorder from Accurascale will suffice to represent the class on my layout. The new Bachmann one looks a great model, but I'm not crazy about the prototype like I am about 40s, 25, 37s and AC electrics.
  4. As per the comments at the start of this thread, I'd like to see the retooled 25 done and dusted and in the shops before the 31. I'll get the 25/1 which will go nicely alongside the SLW ones.
  5. With 3 Accurascale 31s on order, I'll have Class 31 well and truly represented in the light of the announcement from Bachmann today. I'll still be keeping hold of my Lima one which still has its 3 pole pancake motor which runs well. Who needs DCC sound?
  6. I've given up waiting for the early AC electrics Classes 81 - 84 so I'm having a go myself, ironically using Bachmann 85 bodyshells. Just completed the 81. Class 82 in IC Executive will be the next one I have a go at. Details on my Part Deux thread so I don't end up sending this one off topic.
  7. I've got a Hornby Skinhead and it's passable, though the waist band is barely noticeable and appears to be a layer of paint!
  8. I'm sure Bachmann will do well with their 31 if the retooled 37 is anything to go by (recent price reductions notwithstanding). It must be a job for the guys to keep tight lipped whilst we watch the Accurascale one through its development process, as it must be for Andy too.
  9. I won't be cancelling my orders for 3 Accurascale 31s following t'other side's announcement.
  10. It does look nice but it's not my favourite class and I'll have 5 Lima/Hornby/Accurascale ones in a few months. I'd far rather see them do a proper job on their 40 which is lagging behind on the detail front out of the box. I'd argue the same goes for the Peak.
  11. My 31 requirements have been more than met with the Accurascale offering. Twin sugarcube speakers won't compare to an Accurathrash. Just waiting for the price, now!!
  12. Think I’ll trade mine in for one of them!
  13. I may have a large bill on the car next month so I’m quite happy to wait for mine.
  14. There's normally a disaster or two with every one. The latest was me unscrewing the cap and the nozzle from the superglue and tipping into the upturned body of the Class 81. Fortunately I managed to contain it and some activator sprayed on the glue stopped it from oozing and fouling any glazing. One of the cab interiors is exceedingly well stuck in as a result!
  15. The Lima one can be turned into a decent model. Back in the day, someone cut down the Joueff bodyshell removing a 2 fillets of plastic from its entire length and it looked great. I have a fleet of 9 completed Bachmann 40s which have been lowered, the chassis detailed and the screens done (with a tenth to follow), but I'll still buy a few modern RTR versions from KR if they're up to scratch or Accurascale if they get round to it.
  16. Sorry to hear you have to dismantle the layout, but then you’ll have the joy of building another one when you’re settled. One thing I did think about with mine was adding the ability for the layout to be dismantled if need be and it is likely to get moved along the wall when it eventually gets its second extension. Quite how it would handle a move from another country is another thing though. It would probably need a special trip in the car!
  17. I successfully filed the plug down in mine and got it to fit on the one I added DCC sound to. There was nothing to lose in trying it out before cutting off the plug and soldering it to the decoder instead.
  18. Rails have DCC ready and today’s experience with the decoder from Roads and Rails is an option if you can’t find one with sound.
  19. Just fitted the Roads and Rails sourced decoder to 008 and it’s sounding mint. I didn’t notice I had got a square Megabass speaker until I’d placed the order but even so it sounds good. It will get replaced with the correct ESU 50344 speaker when it arrives and the Megabass will get deployed elsewhere.
  20. The concept of selling a loco on is alien to me. They either get kept or used for spares in a small number of cases. I run very little straight out of the box and numerous collector’s editions have been radically altered. There’s no fun to me in getting a loco and just running it on the layout, almost all end up having something done to them. The aim is to set the scene so I can sit back with a coffee or beer and enjoy a little slice of the 80s like I remember it.
  21. Even the later retooled 40s show differences in the shade of blue applied. The later ones can be patch painted with Railmatch BR blue and it’s a perfect match. The earliest batch from 2014 is a slightly different shade, though close they got a full respray when I did the windscreens as the difference was noticeable.
  22. They’ll have to wait until I’ve finished the next 37!
  23. The second of 2 Cavalex 56s has arrived. Bloomin' ace it is - with sound too!
