  1. Peter, Back in 2010 when the A2's first came out there were quite a few errors which I had a go at rectifying on my own models. If you go to the thread on Bachmann A2 I have a few posts on there that may be worth a look. If you look at post 277 it shows one I have modified, this should take you to it. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/846-Bachmann-peppercorn-a2/page-12 If you need any help just PM me. Cheers Ian
  2. David, The roof is looking superb, what a good idea to use York Model making for the skylights. I have seen their stand a few times at shows where they have a great range of quality products. Keep up the good work. Ian H PS:am busy at moment relaying tracks on my Haymarket Cross layout after a bit of a disaster with storage, I stored the layout boards on their ends and on one board it lifted some of the tracks at the end of the board. I will be putting some pics on my thread shortly.
  3. I too have had the same problem, I sent two BR green ones in Nov last year had contact from Hornby in April (looking into my case) finally in May Tania from Hornby rang telling me they were unable to repair the two 31's and offered me £200 credit with Hornby. Like you the same problem when asking for models I wanted that were out of stock Tania asked if I would order something that was in stock as they wanted closure on my case. In the end settled on a Thompson 01 and two Gresley full brakes which were of course at full retail price. In the end I suppose I'm happy its all sorted out and I did get some great models. Ian
  4. Brilliant shed cat David! I love it Ian
  5. I think you'll see I wrote "of note was 60028 on the down Elizabethan & 60031 on the up Elizabethan" I mention them because the Elizabethan was usually an A4 hauled train and would on one of the trains have a Haymarket loco on it. On this day it was Golden Plover on the up train which would probably be on the following days down train. I do have a colour picture of 60028 on the down train but its a bit underexposed but of note is the white cab roof which was painted for the Royal train of a few days earlier when it travelled to Malton with the Queen. 6. ON THIS DAY 12th JUNE 1961 YORK This was a particularly good day at York with no less than nine A4’s passing through, of note was 60028 on the down Elizabethan & 60031 on the up Elizabethan. Biggest cop this day was the first Deltic D9000 complete with front headlamp. I think from what I have read this must have been one of the the first runs on the up Flying Scotsman for a Deltic after been taken out of service along with all others that had been built at this time for cracked frames. 42733, 43039,44577,44804,44944,45375,45576,45662,46106 60005,60006,60015,60017,60023,60028,60031,60032,60034 60040,60053,60063,60078,60084 60119,60129,60146 60511,60513,60521, 60817,60962,61018,61031,61135,61267,61948,62014,63708,63738,63781,63939,64760,64875 70037,80120 90161,90189,90224,90502,90578,90625,90710,92086,92127,92173 D237,D252,D256,D271,D277,D283,D284,D286,D290,D344 D2063,D2066,D2268,D2270 D3070,D3315,D3340,D3940 D5110,D5112,D5148,D5150, D8054,D8064 D9000 D9000 UP FLYING SCOTSMAN 60031 GOLDEN PLOVER UP ELIZABETHAN (NOTE THE BLUE NAMEPLATE) Ian H

  13. David, Since last on your thread I have had Model Rail at my house taking pictures for inclusion in the magazine. It seems that the guys that have been to photograph it like the night shots, I have one or two that were sent to me by Chris Nevard but at the moment I can't put them on RMweb as they haven't as yet used them in the mag. Once in the mag I will post some, if you are interested in lighting for your shed I use RMlectronics led yard lamps which are excellent, they also do lamps for fitting on the walls of buildings which look really good with all the lights out!!! Cheers Ian
  14. When I did my Haymarket Cross layout I didn't know about Metalsmiths so purchased a Fleischmann one and after much cutting and gluing have Anglosised it. This has worked really well at all the shows we have attended with positive comments from many. I also have another Fleischmann turntable in my fiddle yard which is standard and this also works well. Having seen layouts with working turntables at shows the main problem they seem to have is accurate lining up so I knew that as mine would be in use all the time it had to line up every time, this the Fleischmann one does brilliantly. I have been in touch with Metalsmiths but at the moment there seems to be no movement with their 70' table so its the old Fleischmann for now. Ian H
  15. Thanks for the info, I remember seeing these at the York show some years ago and whilst a good reference they were to early for me as I model the early 60's. This book covers most of the LNER/BR days and is extremely helpful for info on the 1960's era. On a slightly different subject while looking at the North Eastern Railway Association stand I did come across a great publication on North Eastern engine sheds which I purchased. This was used extensivly for the planning and building of my exhibition layout Haymarket Cross which uses the plans for Scarborough engine shed.
  16. Not sure if this has already been mentioned but I just picked up a copy of this book written by Steve Banks & Clive Carter and what great reading it is. I have been trying for years to find out what type and formations of coaches ran on the East Coast main line and here it is all in one book from the days of the LNER through to the 1960's. Lots of information on the named trains as well as the not so famous ones with loads of photos. Published by OPC with a retail price of £45-00 I managed to find one on Ebay for 30-00 inc postage. I understand it is available through Amazon at a similar price. Well done Steve & Clive. Ian H (Haymarket Cross)
  17. David, Your trackbed looks a bit fancy!!! how did you do that! Ian H
  18. You should be so lucky! I sent two back middle of November 2012 and after six weeks emailed them. Still waiting for a reply. silverlink
  19. Iain, Your layout is coming on really well, keep up the good work I look forward to seeing it running. Ian H ( Haymarket Cross)
  20. I read with great interest the above comments on lamps and couplings, for my layout the couplings are'nt a problem as most movements around the shed are light engine only so no fiddling with three link couplings. The lamps however are a different matter, in my attempts to add more realism to my models I've perhaps shot myself in the foot. I decided some time ago to go down the 'working lamps' road which to me are so much better than the over scale Springside etc type. The problem now is I cannot remove them as they are both glued and wired into the loco, question now is when coming on shed does the loco look better for having working lamps that may not be exactly correct, none at all, or perhaps having removable over scale white metal ones that will need the dreaded 'hand-of-god' to remove/refit them ( definatly not prototypical ). Personally I think I will stick with my working ones and will in future when fitting new ones to locos fit them with single 'light engine' ones. Ian H Haymarket Cross
  21. True, but I have looked carefully at the lamps and in most cases they do look to be clear lens showing with the odd one looking darker which of course could be red. I'm sure someone will be able to tell us procedure with lamps when coming on shed. I think locos would have two lamps available one of which would go on rear depending on direction and would have a red lens flipped over the normal white light, on coupling up to train the rear lamp would then be placed on front lamp iron and the red lens removed. I think this is why there are lots of locos with the light engine one lamp on the outside lamp irons and not on the correct middle one. Ian H
  22. With reference lamps on locos whilst on shed, I'm now even more confused! I have just had a quick look at a couple of books with A4 & A3 locos shown. On careful examination I find quite a wide range of lamps been shown while 'on shed' yes there are locos shown minus any lamps but I find many with just one on display on either front left or right lamp irons. I have found two or three with one on the top lamp iron but am very suprised to find around half a dozen with express lamps fitted. I will continue to go through my books and check out what the A1 and A2's are showing as well as any other stock I find on shed. I now feel slightly better that my locos are not necessarily wrong with the lamps they are fitted with. Ian H
  23. This is my own observations of the class 40's, according to my Ian Allan winter 1961 I have got D369 been allocated to 5A Crewe North it must have been fairly new as I have pencilled it in my Winter 61 Loco shed Book. This also means it should be all over green with no yellow (thank goodness). In my spring 62 book I have most locos as allocated to sheds therefore I suspect nearly all would have been in green with no yellow warning. I have photos of a few class 40's up to D354 ( 50A York) & they definatly had no yellow panels with the highest cop been D389 I'm sure it didn't have any yellow ends . D211 in my spring 62 Shed book is allocated to 1B Camden. Great period this as you never knew what you were going to see on a day out spotting. Imagine copping three or four new Deltics half a dozen class 40's and three or four class 45's. this was the norm at York in 1961/62. Ian H
  24. I feel I must make comment here as my layout seems to have attracted a few comments about it. First, I know that Andy York, like myself is mortified that there are pictures of locos with wheels off the track, we along with Richard Wilson who was also at the photo shoot all managed to miss this. Anyone who has had their layout photographed will know how much time and effort is taken up with getting 'that shot' right. Andy and Richard were at my home for over seven hours to do all the photos and I was constantly taking off and putting on new locos for the next shot. I suppose you should blame me for it was I that kept wanting to remove locos that were in the background to replace them with different models. Moving on to loco lamps, whilst most of my stock (in excess of100 locos) does not have lamps fitted there are still quite a few that do and for some time now I have been making my own that do actually work! this entails using a 1.5mm yellow led which I fashion to shape to look like an oil lamp. This has to then be fixed in place with Araldite and wired to the decoder. Of course this does cause a problem when moving around the shed as some locos have express lamps others have goods lamps and some have light engine lamps (the last is correct for coming on/off shed) and they cannot be removed. Whilst not totally accurate they do look good and as yet no visitor that has seen them at a show has commented adversely about them. Fact is we get so many enquiries about the lamps we need one of our team on standby to answer questions about them. I think with all layouts sometimes we all need to use, what's it called? 'modellers licence' or we would not be able to build or run our models. With reference loco couplings (tension lock) I totally agree here all locos whether steam or diesel look so much better without them. Problem I have is we now do quite a lot of coal wagon movement around the layout which needs couplings to be able to do it. Most of this is done with diesel locos (class 26, 27, 24, 15 & 08) so these have actually had couplings put back on!. Regarding the dozens of steam locos and Deltics, I am at present removing all tension lock couplings as the amount of times they run on a layout with stock is minimal they are not required. I will be examining ways of fixing some kind of unobtrusive coupling to the diesels. By allowing my layout to be featured in the magazines I suppose I have put my head above the parapets so therefore I should be ready for it to be shot at. I thank all of those who have posted comments I am pleased you like Haymarket Cross, it was just an idea I had but then decided to build and since attending shows with it our team of operators have met some wonderful fellow modellers, its been a great experience. As one of our younger team members said 'never ever thought I'd have so much fun with a load of old age pensioners' cheeky sod!!! Ian H 'Haymarket Cross'
