We were honoured today here in Scarborough by the arrival of Flying Scotsman on a running in turn before travelling to London. As can be seen it looks superb in its BR Green livery. It arrived around 15-00hrs and departed back to York at 17-05. Sorry Derek, I haven't got any shots of Gallows Close area which is a shame, when I was at school in the old town at Scarborough we didn't have any playing fields so we were sent to Northstead school where there was large playing fields. I used to watch the Whitby trains coming and going while doing my PE! My grand daughter now goes to Northstead and every morning I walk to school with her over what used to be Northstead carriage sidings. Thought you might like to see one or two of my old photos of Scarborough, I took them back around 1961 when a young teenager. My dad was an avid amateur photographer so I was able to borrow his cameras, when I got home he would help me develop the films and do the prints. Hi David, Yes the 0 gauge whilst fictitious is based on BR North Eastern region early 60's, we are using photos of buildings, sheds, water towers and ash pits etc as per North Eastern design. There are six of us at our club working on it and we have just started purchasing locos for use on it. I sold some of my '00' locos to help towards the cost of what I've bought up to now. I now have an LH Loveless A4 'Mallard' and a Golden Age A2 'Irish Elegance ' they are truly stunning. Ian

Hi David, With reference your inspection pits I attach photos of the ones I built into my Haymarket Cross layout. I routed out the plywood baseboard (9mm) and fitted the Peco code 75 units, the boards have not warped but as you are looking at building yours the full length of the shed it might be wise to add strengthening under them. I used Peco code 75 track which I slid into the chairs on the pits after removing from sleepers, they have worked fine over the many shows we've attended. I see you are using C&L trackwork, are you going to use their point kits as well? I ask because I am currently building a new 0 gauge shed layout with friends at my local model railway club. We are using C&L point kits which are really good and not that difficult to make (once you've got the hang of it) Cheers Ian

I have loads of videos that I took in the 1980's (is it that long ago!) Although I was recording on VHS when I look at it now most of it is pretty good. The Spa Express used to run Tues, Thurs and Sunday so I used to go away from Scarborough on the Tuesday (my day off) and Sunday and on the Thursday I would time my lunch with the train coming into Scarborough. I finished work a 5pm so a quick rush up to the station to get it going out. I got most of the locos that came in the 80's, I think the only one I didn't get was Lord Nelson, I did also get some of the diesel traction running in the 80's. I'm trying to edit them so I can sell them like I did in the 80's only using more up to date editing equipment but I'm so busy with my layout 'Haymarket Cross' going to shows and maintaining it and also building a new 0 gauge layout at my local club I just don't seem to have any time. One day I'll get them done. Ian

I well remember the day Rob, I was on a wall at the entrance to Queen Street sidings videoing Scotsman. It came slowly past me and the front bogie wheels came off the rails right in front of me, I got it all on tape! I think the loco was just to big and heavy for the very old sleepers and chairs as it broke the chairs and spread the track. Ian

Having over many years collected A4's in 00 I have always wished I had an 0 gauge one, well finally last week I managed to get one. I attach some photos of it [attachlment=654600:60022 C.jpg] This is an L.H. Loveless model and in my opinion one of the nicest models you can find, along with a few friends from my local model railway club we are building a new 0 gauge show layout which is based on BR North Eastern region. I have also got a Golden Age A2 which is also a super model and am presently looking for possibly a B1 or V2 to add to my collection. to do this I'm having to sell much of my collection of 00 stock to finance it so I will have quite a few Hornby latest type A4's in BR Green late crest double chimney for sale. If you are interested in any please private message me for details. Most have real coal some have driver/fireman and are DCC on board (but I can remove the chip). I love what you're doing with your layout David and having read Dave's input regarding track and have to agree with him. I wish I'd had the bottle to have a go with my 'Haymarket Cross' layout and if I was to do another I would certainly have a go. I used Peco finescale code 75 which does look reasonably well when ballasted, I used N' gauge and after airbrushing with track grime etc it turned out well. Ian

I have some Really Useful Storage boxes which I use for putting my locos in when attending shows. the locos are wrapped in bubble wrap to protect them but with around 80+ engines it takes much time taking them out and putting them back. A couple of friends at my model club have some of the commercially available boxes with precision cut inserts which is the type of thing I could do with however the inserts are the wrong size for my boxes. Does anyone know where I can get custom cut foam inserts to dimensions that will fit my boxes. Cheers Ian H

Digitrains do a very good sound chip for both the B1 & K1, have just fitted one in a K1 and the sound is excellent. The decoder is a Zimo one and you can adjust the chuff rate to suit. Though not my loco I think the decoder and 28mm speaker worked out around £90 which is quite a bit cheaper than Loksound. Ian

Well I'm not a happy bunny, After fixing the wonky footplate on one of the three I purchased the other day I now find that one tender has half fallen apart! the front part of the tender where the coal hole is was not glued at all and just fell out, on one of the others the tender side frame which has the axle boxes and spring detail on also fell off also due to not been glued. Worse still part of the valve gear at one side has dropped off and I can't see any way of repairing it forcing me to contact the retailer I purchased them from (Rails of Sheffield). They have been very helpful and sent me a free returns label so I can return it. They're going to have a look at it themselves and if nothing can be done they are sending it back to Hornby so it could be a while before I see any return. They did say they would let me have a replacement but they have totally sold out. I'll keep you posted. Ian

I have just taken delivery of three of these wonderful locos and all of them have the wonky footplate! I have dismantled one of them to fit a decoder so while apart I had a look at the footplate. On the side that was wonky I found the location where one of the sandboxes were fitted to be the culprit in that its locating pin and glue were pushing down on the chassis causing it to lift the footplate. Simple solution file off the excess glue and part of pin that sticks through which seems to have cured the problem. Ian

With reference thread 231, I've been doing renaming and numbering since the 1970's way before TMC came on the market and am amazed that people will pay out so much money for what is after all a fairly easy thing to do. In answer to you question on how much would someone else charge I would charge between £10 and £15 for a weathering job depending how heavy a job you want doing. Putting coal in the tender a couple of pounds! My advice is purchase your model from wherever you normally go and then look for someone who will do the mods for you at a price you're happy with. I know from my extensive experience in this field you will save enough to nigh on buy another model.

Who on earth buys from these people, the prices are crazy. They have a weathered Heljan class 27 at £160!!!

Just ordered one of each R3243 & R3243A from Hattons, information to hand was around 15th Dec for delivery so all fingers crossed I get them before Christmas. Ian H

Thanks for the info on this long awaited model Steve, I'm awaiting delivery of one from Hatton's in the hope it will be here for this weekend when I visit Crewe model show with my layout 'Haymarket Cross'. I will no doubt need to run it in before chipping and weathering it although I don't think I'll have time before the w/e to weather it. Ian
