  1. Some more work,

This time on VGAs, which are essential for the military traffic.

I had one that wasn't ' factory weathered '. I've removed the ' railfreight ' titles, repainted the ends pale yellow ( from Bachmann Orange ), weathered the sides a bit to get rid of the shine, and ' frame dirted ' the under side.

I've also be slowly gathering a few details to go in the portacabin, can't put the roof on, until the interior looks a bit more lived in.

Also ordered tow new military land rovers to go in the half relief vehicle depot

  2. Hi,

I thought I'd start a new topic for this recycled layout. This was originally ' run round sidings', which then lost focus and was used as a fiddle yard for another layout.

I was going to bin it, but I thought it was worthy of some care and to turn it into something useful.

The concept is fairly simple, and is based on didcot in 1996-2000 era. We will have MOD traffic, civil engineers traffic, and maybe some enterprise and MGRs running around.

The motivation came from the desire to run my Hornby class 60 and the nice new class 37s I had on order from Bachmann !

Layout is 10' x 1 1/2 feet, at present the fiddle yard is yet to be finished as it needs the top board replacing. Scenic will be half of that, unless I extend onto the fiddle board a bit.

    Since I started recycling ,

    I have

    - reinstated rear embankment

    - refreshed all hard surfaces with scalescenes paper

    - built a modern concrete bridge as a scenic break at far end.

    - rejuvenated the canal basin scene

    - painted baseboard sides

    - installed various scenic items.

    - installed back scenes

As progress will be slow and it's a small layout, I'll post updates on rolling stock projects here as well.

Current locos are 60026, 37242, 37174. I expect to go to about 10 locos to get some variety.

Here are some photos showing where I've got to.

Far end, with new modern lights and new road bridge. Layout designed to be able to run through both ends if necessary in future.

This concrete area at back is where low relief army depot will be. The building is a Hornby works office but I thought it was suitable as an MOd building

Half finished portacabin for shunters as per the one at rugby.

Canal basin, not sure if this new technique for water is realistic enough, someone will be upset as local yobs have untied their boat

Perfect motive power for the period 37242 in the beautiful mainline scheme, brand new !

I'm including details I like such as military vehicles, canal boats and if I can squeeze it in a half relief rugby club......it's my ideal world !

  3. A big difference, because there are no ads for individual products in at least the last two pages of hattons.

If you think something is a bargain, might I suggest the ' bargains ' thread.

There are model shops on here that actually pay to advertise on this site and thus support the site

  4. I have always made planks and that implies shunting as I have a spare room with all of 10' down one side, and a bed the other for visitors.

I agree it's go to be done with purpose in mind, and people tend to shunt slower than the real railway does !

I can see the attraction for the opposite end of the spectrum with a big rounds, but shunting is also a great way of keeping all that ace stock from the manufacturers where you can see it

  5. A golden time......

I was just getting back into trains, and scoured ' rail ' for reports of interesting workings.

Funnily enough that's about all I did at that point...as cider and chasing girls and clubbing took precedence

    Jumpers for goalposts etc etc..
