  1. The oldest vehicle in the 1977 Royal Train was London and North Western Railway Special Saloon 45000 and it is seen here at Derby on the 28th July 1977. This saloon was originally built in 1920 for use by the Chairman of the London and North Western Railway and subsequently passed into ownership of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923, where it was used by the Chairman Josiah Stamp. During its service history it has been used regularly by members of the Royal family including King Edward VIII, HM Queen Elizabeth, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales. It has also been used by VIP’s such as Sir Winston Churchill, who used it during his election campaign of 1951. It was regularly used as part of the Royal Train fleet from around 1948 and as can be seen has been given modern running gear (Mark I underframe, B4 bogies, air brakes etc) for use in the 1977 Royal Train. It provided a lounge area, two bedrooms (for Royal Protection staff), dining and office facilities, kitchen, bathroom and an attendant’s compartment. It was withdrawn in 1990 and is currently (May 2011) preserved at the Midland Railway Centre. 45000 - https://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5735449541/

  4. Stabled in the reception sidings of Derby Litchurch Lane Carriage works is London Midland and Scottish Railway bogie brake M31024, 25th June 1977. It was built at Wolverton to lot 1198 in 1939 and is a Period III standard 50ft full brake to diagram D2007. It was originally built with gangways but these have been removed. Whilst these vehicles were still fairly common in 1977 (there being three hundred and ninety one still in service at the end of 1977) it was unusual to see one in blue and grey livery. 5. Formed into a cross country express and standing in platform 1 at Derby is unique Bar/Buffet E1883, 23rd August 1980. Vehicle History E1883 is a one off vehicle built at the Derby Carriage works in 1968 to lot 30784 and utilised the underframe of Kitchen Car 80021. Basically a Mark I vehicle it was built at a time when Mark II vehicle production was in full swing and has a strange appearance with its window style resembling more the Mark IId-e air conditioned vehicles introduced in 1971. E1883 is not actually air conditioned but is dual heat pressure ventilated. It had a short service life being withdrawn in 1981 however following withdrawal it was sold for preservation and has spent time on the Severn Valley Railway although currently it can be found on the Weardale Railway. 8. On this Day in History – Derby Works – 8th April 1973 (Sunday). Forty eight years ago I had a tour round the now closed and demolished Derby Locomotive Works which produced the following: class 03 (2381/87), class 08 (3009/34/92/94/98, 3100/07, 3587, 3695, 3765/79, 3856, 3909/12/36/88, 4000, 4149), class 17 (8598), class 20 (8016/29/40/59, 8123/35/36, 8308), class 24 (5025/49/55/57/85), class 25 (5160, 5201/22/84/89, 7539/42/43/50/70/95, 7625/54), class 27 (5349/91), class 40 (242), class 44 (3), class 45 (19/43/59/67/72/86, 106, 45101/03), class 46 (160/71/83). Steam: 4472 Flying Scotsman, 45690 Leander, 47357. Locomotives of note were ex Southern Region class 08’s 3092/94/98 and 3100 which were withdrawn and were about to undergo an overhaul having been sold for export to a Liberian company, LAMCo. Class 08, 3034 withdrawn from Tinsley in November 1972 and used for spares for the LAMCo class 08’s, broken up at Derby in November 1973. Class 24, 5049 which had been involved in an accident at Kidsgrove when the No2 end cab was crushed back to the bulkhead with the bulkhead bent backwards into the boiler compartment. The repair resulted in 5049 gaining a new cab with the later style roof mounted headcode box. Also of note is the commencement of the class 45 electric train heating equipment fitment with 45101, 45103, 45104 (59), 45105 (86), 45106 (106) and 45107 (43) all present. Where was 45102? Finally there were three steam locomotives under repair, 4472 Flying Scotsman which had run under its own power from Edge Hill after returning from spending four years in America, Stanier Jubilee 45690 Leander being repaired and repainted prior to moving to the Dinting Railway Centre and Fowler Jinty tank 47357 destined for the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley. A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. 11. D149 (46012), Entered Traffic 12/61, Withdrawn 7/80, Broken Up 10/80 D167 (46030), Entered Traffic 5/62, Withdrawn 12/80, Broken Up 11/82 Holding the sixteenth and seventeenth spots for the shortest service life at 18 years, 7 months are D149 (46012) and D167 (46030). By the summer of 1980 only three class 46 locomotives had been withdrawn (46003/05/24 with collision or fire damage) and although class 46 locomotives were still generally up to the tasks demanded of them the introduction of the HST’s, the reduction of traditional freight traffic flows and the steady delivery of new freight locomotives meant that there days were numbered. Although Derby Works continued to undertake classified repairs until January 1981 the withdrawal program commenced in July 1980 when 46012 was withdrawn with a cracked frame. 46012 was towed to Swindon Works and broken up within three months of withdrawal during October, the first Class 46 to be broken up at Swindon. 46030 was one of the Class 46 locomotives stored at Swindon at the end of the 1980 summer timetable and arrived for storage at Swindon during November 1980. It was officially withdrawn in December 1980 and was not among those reinstated at the end of 1981. It would languish at Swindon until finally broken up in November 1982. 46012 – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6334015498/ 46030 – https://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/14056048271/ To be continued
