  1. I see the black cab roof has made an appearance again on the Railroad HST.  Just like it did when the Blue Grey version was first announced a few years ago.  On that occasion  when released it had the correct yellow cab roof.  Hopefully the black roof will change colour when released.

I'm no expert on NSE, but is the black window surround correct on the NSE Class 50.  I've has a quick google search and it looks like it should be white.

  2. Amazing, a topic about two, sorry three items, must not forget the bus, has generated more comments and got more views than any of the other topics on this year's Hornby announcement.  And yes I appreciate the irony that my post is one of them

I may balance it with a comment about the livery application on the Railroad HST in Intercity Swallow (Black cab roof) on the diesel topic or see if anyone on it can confirm whether Class 50 Exeter had black window surrounds in original NSE.

Out of interest, does anybody think it is actually an issue?

I am more than happy with the performance of my Peaks (and I have way too many) and one of the best performing "locos" there is a Bo-Bo in the form of the Heljan 128 which will pull anything (and yes, I know it is not a loco really).

    Roy

Perhaps not with the powered axles but possibly with the pick up arrangement.

I got one last year (Lytham St Annes) the running out of the box was pretty rough.  I ran it in an hour each direction and it sounded less rough than it did to start with, however I found that it failed to restart when stopped about 50% of the time.  As a result I returned it and got a replacement.  I doubt the rough running was related to the pick up arrangement but wondered if the stalling was.  I run DC.

The replacement runs a lot smoother but still stalls more than most other locos I have but nothing like the rate the first one stalled at.

I have bought DCC Concepts wiper pick ups which I intend to fit to the set of wheels without pick ups.  However I did not want to do that until I was sure it did not need returned under warranty.

  4. Thanks for reawakening the topic.

My memory was that most of the Westfield or Seafield trains as in from the East of Longannet were not of the canopied version.  Most rakes had no canopied hoppers, however I think there could be some canopied mixed in a rake.

I had always understood the canopied were more common on trains originating from the Edinburgh direction often associated with 26s rather than 20s.

I am sure others will be able to bring a bit more clarity and certainty on this issue.

4.48 is the formation I recall being most common.  The next train passing Torryburn has a right mix of types.

    Here's a few pics, firstly of the layout prior to conversion;

As others have said, the building just screams out Edinburgh, excellent.

Interested to see the modifications  to the buses.  I was aware the original model was of the less common smaller windows version but had not thought about converting them until now.

  6. These wagons are listed on a few different Facebook selling pages.  I think the seller said in the comments these are also for sale on eBay.  On that tenuous link I have posted them here!

Anyway looks like we will need security next time we run them on the club layout!

I don't know quite what you mean?

If you have a walk-up ticket that's valid on LUMO as it is on any service the ticket itself is valid for (peak/off-peak, Std/First Class etc). If you have an advance then that's valid only on the relevant service, so LUMO Flex tickets for instance are valid only on the relevant LUMO services.

Thanks for you response, I  was wondering what practical difference LUMO not being open access means to me as a passenger. Perhaps it makes none.

If I go by LNER I can buy an advanced single from say Aberdour to Kingscross on the LNER website.  The ticket includes a connection service from Aberdour to Waverley which allows me to use any of the ScotRail services for that portion and a specific service on LNER between Waverley and Kingcross.  I was wondering if not being open access means that the if I buy an advanced ticket from LUMO it would not include any connection to Waverley in my Aberdour to Kingscross example.

An interesting video.  At 7:00 as it arrives in  Newcastle there was a brief moment all 4 long distance operators were lined up, XC, LNER, Luton and TPE.  Wonder if anyone got a photo.

Open access - what does that mean for passengers.  Does it mean I can't buy a ticket at a ScotRail operated station for example or does it mean connecting services from say Perth can't be bought.

Erm, if you read the policy it is aimed at exploiting markets in essential goods during Covid - you need to decode the euphemism 'taking advantage of buyers in this time of uncertainty' (= charging £10 each for disposable face masks, £50 for a litre of petrol etc). I somehow doubt anyone at ebay will give a second glance to model railways which for most folk unaccountably do not appear to be considered essential supplies.

You may be right, there were three drop down options, the first two the only options relevant were Gouging, the third there were about 5 options, medical supplies, household a couple of others and the option I opted for "Other"  I did find the list in the last drop down odd in terms of options.  I had expected to be asked for some explanation or justification for reporting.

That said the item was removed in under an hour of me reporting it.

It may be the seller gets an automatic notification that the item has been reported.

Someone bought it.   Best offer was accepted.  We will never know how much.

This https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284472483215?hash=item423be19d8f%3Ag%3A5ngAAOSwasRhVy3q&LH_BIN=1   looks like a bog standard Triang horse box in Wrenn packaging and over priced.

Maybe removed by eBay after reported for Gouging. I think it usually says sold when someone buys it.

I'm going to offer a third option, learned a new word recently.

     Gouging.

Seems to be where someone tries to resell something on ebay at an excessive price.  A bit like the £39.99 Aldi Kayaks this summer I saw at between £80 and £200 on eBay and Facebook.

Defined by eBay as "Increasing the price of items to a level that is much higher than is considered fair or reasonable"

Best of all eBay has a policy on Gouging, it is not allowed and people can report it.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/reporting-price-gouging-ebay?id=5105

They are taking offers, you could always have fun with that option.

    Great videos - thanks Waverley.

All the NSE stock appears to be in the lighter blue.

I am now thinking that the darker blue sets were on the Cambridge services.

Does anyone have confirmation of this?

    Andrew

Another video for you. Paddington to Oxford.

I am no expert on these matters but it looks like there were more mk2b or possibly mk2c coaches in Volume 3 West Country.  Whilst a higher proportion of Mk2a in Volume 1 Paddington to Oxford.

A question that may have already been answered!!

Were all the NSE Padd-Oxfords and Padd-Herefords run with sets with the darker NSE blue?  Likewise were all the Waterloo-Exeters run with sets with the lighter NSE blue?

Were sets ever mixed with dark and light blue?

    Any help much appreciated.

    Andrew

I suspect You Tube may be the place to look.  Ive seen plenty of videos from the late 80s.

Here are a couple for starters. There are a lot of HSTs in the second video but there are NSE stock as well.

Have some fun, make them an offer as unrealistically low as their asking price is unrealistically high.  I'd say £12.54 for starters.

IIRC it was used for a summer 'season' and passengers had to book as meals were provided. I'm sure there was a photo in Railway Magazine but I'm not sure of which issue.

The Alan Harrison video is dated 1986. Assuming it was all videoed at the same time June 1986.

Departs 11 mins, returns 31 mins.

I've definitely seen pictures of it in use with passengers aboard on Kyle Line trains in the mid 1980s, though I'm damned if I can find the pictures now!

Closest I came was finding video footage in the Alan Harrison collection of it departing and returning to Inverness.  See a post on page 25 for details.

In that video the LMS saloon had been remarshalled to the rear on the return journey. Ex 101 were not remarshalled presumably as there was no point without being able to turn it.  The ex 101 having one forward facing view unlike the LMS saloon with two.  Not sure tourists would have appreciated a close up and personal view of a 37 on the return as much as some of us.
