  1. If you're just going to dabble in OO to get the feel of it, I'd pick up some cheapies from Ebay/model shop bargain bucket, it shouldn't matter what it is. I model the GNR so there is very little the RTR boys produce that is suitable. Having said that Hornby, Bachmann & Rapido* have all produced at least one item. *if you ever find a Rapido Stirling Single in a bargain bucket let me know...
  2. You are KR senior and I claim my £5. It's the same excuse he's trotted out since the errors were noted.
  3. The Poets area of Bedford is classic rows of terracing with no parking. Trying to negotiate the area in the evening when all are at home with their many cars on the road is a PITA. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.1407984,-0.4840804,3a,75y,314.54h,97.03t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1swlGyKr4EA1m7Wytc7W0phQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192 Although there are some wealthy people living there, it does have a reputation as an area where 'ladies of negotiable virtue' have operated from in the past. If they've got any gripes they ought to direct them to the Lib Dem Mayor who actively pursued going through Bedford then North Bedfordshire as the only viable option, when it was initially discounted at the first hurdle. Bear in mind North Beds is Tory Heartlands...
  4. The joy of fat finger typing on a phone while avoiding a gale and downpour...and not looking at autocorrect 😬
  5. Unfortunately I've found that those older than me have an attitude of entitlement. I don't encounter the problems of younger not stepping aside, although I've oftened wondered if my dribbling might play a part in that...
  6. The locomotive body represents 2 different times in its life. It was never in the condition that KR have produced. KR’s reasoning is that because it was a ‘prototype’ and therefore it doesn’t matter that it’s inaccurate. some purchasers will be happy and others may not be. I think it’s a lost opportunity to produce a decent model of one of the more peculiar prototypes we’ve seen.
  7. You may be better running the boiler as fan heaters can consume a lot of power for little gain.
  8. If you are on a borehole your pump will be using power. From memory the average is 2000W but you are offsetting the cost of water from water rates/meter to power costs. If you are using 6500KW a year you have to have something like an immersion heater on the water tank that is heating water continuously (but you don't have one) or something else producing a lot of heat, I suspect you are using the tumble drier more than you realise. Essentially to use 4000kw of power above the average you have to be producing a lot of heat somewhere. I am currently renovating a set of barns with 240 square meters of floor area, the projected average internal temp is 21C provided by an Air Source heat pump and underfloor heating. The projected consumption is 5993kw per year with a lower outside temp than where you are. The total consumption will be 8000kw for everything.
  9. We stayed in a Pullman at Ravenglass earlier this year https://ravenglass-railway.co.uk/staying-over/elmira-pullman-coach We had a really good week and the coach was really nicely appointed. A very friendly line and will definitely return for another visit.
  10. IIRC it's done at Farringdon when the units are stationary. The shoe is on the 3rd rail as the pan is dropped.
  11. It's easy Tony...it's only a 2 wire system 😀
  12. I’d be surprised if the 72 & 73 services were being withdrawn, it’s a popular service and the only one to Bedford from both Biggleswade and Sandy. Of course it could be Stagecoach looking for more subsidy as withdrawing the service was the same tactic they used last time claiming costs were unsustainable but at the same time refusing to reveal their figures.
  13. I've posted this before, but having just completed a renewal process for a line society there are a lot of people who are either unable to use card/internet banking or it isn't available to them so cheques are the only viable option.
  14. He's not the Messiah....he's a very naughty boy....
  15. A few years ago I was on a cruise ship and some of the officers did a Q&A session. A British passenger asked the security officer whether the Nepalese security on the ship were ex Gurka. The officer replied that they were. An American passenger then put his hand up and asked "what is a Gurka"and the Officers reply was that the Gurkas were an elite force of the British Army to which the American said "like a Navy Seal then" "Oh no" said the officer, if there were 20 seals in a locked and secure room an unarmed Gurka could easily find his way in, dispatch the Seals with a toothpick and leave before any of them had any idea they were in danger.
  16. My work has taken me into many peoples houses over the years and I've always been surprised at just how much energy some people use. A simple example was a Cleaner that asked if the heating engineer could check their heating as the house was 'cold'. When he arrived the owner was wearing shorts and T shirt and complaining that the house just didn't keep the heat. he looked at the thermostat which was set at 27 degrees and could hear the boiler working away. but the owner said it wasn't hot enough for him. The engineer said that several windows were open and told the owner that the boiler could never keep up with the heat loss, but the owner said that he was recently diagnosed with asthma and had to have fresh air. I've also had people work for me and when we've discussed utility bills I was amazed at just how much some of them paid. But If you visited them at home you could see why, tv's on in several rooms, lights on in every room etc, just wasteful power consumption. They would always be complaining about a lack of cash (bear in mind I knew what they earn't) but never thought about looking at what, and where their money was going.
  17. That's something that's been debunked a long time ago.
  18. Whilst many have been reminiscing about meetings with the Queen over the last few days I often wondered what it must have been like for the Monarch to meet so many of her subjects and just what an impression they made upon her. Our own family link is that my Father met her in March 1965 when she launched what was then the biggest oil tanker in the world 'British Admiral' at Barrow in Furness. As children we wondered just what dad had said to her and whether she was given 'extra homework' like we were. But we figured it couldn't have been too bad as he wasn't sent to the Tower. When people asked mum what the Queen had spoken to Dad about, my mother replied that "if it wasn't about ships engines he was unlikely to remember"and that she admired the Queen for continuing to smile while talking to him..
  19. There are quite a few on RMWeb that work in shipping and would know a lot more than I, but I would suspect that your shipping costs of a double decker bus some 7000 miles by sea would be astronomical.
  20. Pity you didn't mention beforehand, we now live just 20 miles from BoT.
  21. I'd forgotten about that point. With no rights to overnight at the roadside a DD would prove difficult to accommodate.
