I am at present designing an external fire escape stairway, It has to take into account the number of people likely to use it as well as age (5years old for example need a different design of handrail). When permission is given it is based upon a certain level of occupancy (Bedrooms) and as such means of escape numbers are derived from that. If a building has twice ( for example) the amount of people it was designed for, then barriers such as fire doors are left open and communal places such as stairways become funnels for hot gases as more people exit. Overcrowding of properties is something we see a lot of, as an example there is a very large Chinese restaurant nearby where most of the male staff live in a 2 bed flat. There are upwards of 12 at any one time. We wondered that they were being exploited but it turns out they want to live that way so they can save their money and gamble (their words). The block they are in was designed for about 16 people and yet there are 40+ inhabiting, and when we've been there we've taken the wedges from the fire doors so they close correctly.

If you can, cover the timber from the sun. In this weather it can move and shake which you don't want it to do. Your best bet is to figure out what you've got and put what's needed last at the bottom of a very big pile, easier to cover then. Interested to see this progress.

Do what I do. Model everything at night ...when it's foggy or in a snowstorm..while wearing dark glasses...and facing the other way......

For those interested in old buses (and coaches)
chris p bacon replied to Joseph_Pestell's topic in Wheeltappers
They did, and some of them promptly caught fire. Having visited Malta last year and seeing just how tight the roads are I was surprised they were obtained for the island by Arriva, but then it had the Franchise stripped from them. They are all now dumped in a field, covered in guano. https://www.flickr.com/photos/railwaydave/24410068582/in/photostream/ -
I'd say that considering how you refer to other modellers they do it to annoy you.

Ok I give up.....what would've happened.. -
As with everything else in the age of the internet that's been incorrectly attributed. The correct attribution is 'Lemmy' From Motorhead.

Going OT I know but a few years ago (18+?) we were in New York staying near Macy's and Lady Bacon wanted to pick up a few bits and pieces, whilst browsing through the store she said " why not pick up a couple of smart casual shirts" so I wandered from pile to pile and settled at a counter where they had shirts that had different arm length/chest size/shoulder width/ body length/collar size so you could find one that fitted like it was made to measure. I tried a few on and found a combination that was really comfortable so looked at the price and they were $38 (£24) so I picked up 4 in various colours/designs and paid for them. Later in the hotel my wife said " you went for designer gear then" I had no idea but she pointed out they were Ralph Lauren. I didn't have much of a clue what she was on about then but have to say that after all this time they are still very good shirts.

How many you got?

The easy way to calm yourself is to scan a pasty. Works every time for me.

You're just saying that because I had one on at Railex............My sister gave it to me so it's used for grubby days Any other time and it has to be Ralph Lauren.......

I'm a life member. There's been nothing beyond the announcement of it being gifted. The priorities for the railway are the start of the service to Wareham and getting undercover storage for the coaching stock which deteriorates quickly in the sea air, quicker than the railway can really afford. -
So which is it........ They only way to find out is................FIGHT.........

Ahem........I actually ghost wrote the post for Tony........cough cough.....tenner will do nicely....

Dave, just taking those 3 sentences The building regs were updated some years ago to introduce RCD protection and to limit the scope of works carried out by a non competent person (Part P). Unfortunately you only have to read threads here for example, to understand how many people will ignore advice and certification as they regard it as 'intrusive'. If as has been intimated the fire was a fridge with combustible gases then the RCD probably wouldn't protect as the gases are probably the issue rather than electrical. I would make this comment about fire and means of escape from multiple floor buildings. Time and again on RMWeb we have modellers that see the loft and wish to use it for a layout, The standard advice I give is to undertake a proper conversion and have it inspected and certified. And yet there are quite a few members who post "don't bother it'll be fine' and 'I've never had a problem' and yet the reality is that a properly protected means of escape buys you time. Something these poor residents don't have anymore

I have a lower school within 50M of the shop conversion, at drop off and pick times there are people parked along the road and occasionally across the drive (not so often now since they've seen the delivery lorries are bigger than them) Some people moan about the pick ups but the school is sited next to a very busy main road through town and the oldest child is 7 years so they are going to be supervised. Of course the siting of the school could have been better, it was originally in the middle of town and needed upgrading, so a new one was built in the grounds of the middle school on the edge of town further from the housing it served. The site was sold for housing so isn't available anymore and now the 'new' school needs upgrading as well and the site is too small (half the size of the old).......excellent bit of forward planning by the education authority

I can tell they're fake easily......they're usually less than my tax demand.

A couple of years ago I built a 2 bed house which had to have a sprinkler system as it was down a long narrow driveway. Because sprinklers need a consistent and high volume flow the water main to the property was twice the size for just 5 rooms and you have very good to high water pressure. So for something like a 20+ storey building such as this I don't think it is straightforward to retrofit, water is already going to be pumped but the sprinkler system would demand very high volumes. Regarding building regs, we are inspected thoroughly, Fire and fire doors are a closely monitored part of the regs, they're fitted with closers but people tend to remove them or wedge them shortly after occupation.

I've got half a dozen things on the go at present, I've been taking pics and I'll post them when I finally finish at least one of them........it just won't be the control panel... -
That is unintentional. That is intentional. Parking on the pavement is a PITA, but wilfully damaging someone else's property is no better, and the sort of behaviour that isn't acceptable. Earlier in the thread I mentioned a person parking inconsiderately in front of the war memorial every day, one note on the windscreen explaining this and why it showed a lack of respect and the car has never parked there again.

Toms LNER Workbench - Comet V2 Chassis

Just had time to skim through part of it and Tom has soldered them to the sides first before using a custom made bending jig and screwdriver in a vice. I've got a J3, J6 and a horseshoe tender in the queue so found it most interesting.
