  1. If a fat person falls over in the woods, do the trees laugh....
  2. Sorry but you are wrong. Scumbling is an effect, this is Fake or Faux grain. Faux grain will always look wrong because it is 'Flat' with no relief that you get with timber/teak. No matter how good the craftsman is, he cannot replicate the shading and differences there are in the grain of real Teak. The fact you can see the 'grain' in a B&W photo of faux grain means it's already 'larger than life' I'll wait and see what Bachmann come up with for a finish, the coaches are already streets ahead of what went before but no doubt there'll be criticism no matter what they produce.
  3. But what you are linking to there is coaches from another manufacturer that are meant to be Teak, this is Steel painted as Teak, it's always going to look 'fake' and should do.
  4. Agree with your post about Faux teak and have to say that the finish could depend on the painter responsible, the modern Thomson repro's don't look right to me and seem a little 'bland' in their finish. Re the second para. When first built, coach builders went to quite a bit of trouble to match teak panels with teak cut from the same stock and reversed. What causes the differences in colour is bleaching that happened after a few years in service to clean the panels up. I'm not sure the criticism is warranted until they're seen in the flesh.
  5. I'll try that on my tongue .....oh hang on ...wrong post...
  6. To ease it off try opening out a pair of pliers and placing them over the gear with the axle end on something like a cutting mat. Gently press down and see if it shifts. I sometimes put a bit of spit on the axle to help it along (cleans off easily)
  7. Thanks John. Thinking back, some time ago I had a conversation with someone who had lost all his photo's when another hosting site went belly up, the cynic in me noted not to use such sites.
  8. Out of interest, what is the advantage of using a photo hosting site rather than uploading the pic straight to the thread ?
  9. I blame the Greeks for gayness....... Some of the best written comedy.
  10. Is it leaving the railway already then ? I'd prefer that the coaching stock thats rotting away on the railway is given priority for undercover storage.
  11. You'll be putting your hand in your pocket then. I prefer to support the Wareham service.
  12. This is going off topic a bit but if you take an organisation like Help for Heroes they could fall into that category, whilst set up with the most admirable of objectives they are somewhat out of their depth and the British Legion is now having to take their place. This isn't a criticism of the HFH.
  13. Give High level a go, I've used many of Chris' boxes without issue. http://www.highlevelkits.co.uk
  14. That's an interesting piece, I've long been of the opinion that the NHBC, have if anything, kept and actively dragged building standards into the dark ages. Many years ago I had an appointment with them about joining, part way through it became obvious that they saw their prime purpose as supporting the builder if there were issues with construction rather than promoting a better standard of building. I didn't sign up.
  15. This is going OT but it isn't always because of those reasons. I was amazed to learn recently that someone who was just finishing his degree was dabbling in drugs, his parents were horrified, but to him it was " whats the big deal, it's my choice". This is an intelligent person who had no debt or problems to escape from. Sadly the cycle will continue and there is very little to stop it.
  16. ^^^What he said http://www.hobbyholidays.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=LIMONENE http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Laboratory-solvents-d-limonene-dipentene-5-litres-/162434640471?hash=item25d1dbea57:m:msSvtJTpRH_sKu6IFkNxSjQ I like it, it's much better for laminating than Mek or similar
  17. I agree with your sentiment, but the family and friends are a very keen to portray her as some sort of Saint like figure. I have no opinion either way, but I (and others at work) were rather surprised to Hear a spokesperson on the radio say that those that voted to leave had played a part in her death! I noted that the comment was edited out of subsequent repeats of the report and I am unable to fid it now. Back on topic.
  18. Yes there is a risk to let people say in the buildings, but we have the situation where some residents have refused to move saying that for the past X years they've lived there and think the risk of staying is less than the risk of moving. So do we forcibly remove these people to sleep on an air bed in a leisure hall or hotel room ? The reporting is just concentrating on whether the cladding has failed, it doesn't mention whether there is any fire suppression system or multiple escape routes. The local news said that a "High Rise" building in Norwich had failed, cue shots of a 4/5 storey building. The news media are happy as they've got something to scare people with.
  19. I watched the evacuation on the news and thought it a most stupid scenario. To wake residents in the early hours of the morning and remove them from their beds to temporary accommodation because a problem had existed for some time. Never underestimate the risks, but to wait for some 6-7 hours when people have slept and have the day ahead would surely have been better than half asleep. As for the Fire Service issuing a evacuation order, I'm reminded of an episode a few years ago near Kings Cross. A building under construction caught fire and after a small fire was extinguished a search found 2 gas bottles (now cooling) the London Fire service put a cordon around the building and evacuated those within a defined radius for 24 hours. The outer radius of this cordon was 1/3rd of the way along the country end of KX platforms so they closed the station and passengers were diverted to Finsbury Park for minimal services or to St Pancras for suburban. Those on the Suburban services were then bused from Midland stations across to Great Northern. Lady Bacon was one that had to travel to Bedford and as there was only a few buses transferring passengers I went to pick her up (and a couple of other regulars). With all this traffic criss crossing there were several accidents on the roads that evening that Beds and Herts Police attributed to the closure of KX. London Fire Brigade on the other hand were proudly boasting that the fire was "Injury Free".
  20. Probably the last one I rode seriously, Was fairly light and fun but could get you into some scrapes if you daydreamed for a few seconds. Don't remember it being a cheap machine to own, but might be more about my income then. Yamaha FZ750(?) after that, didn't enjoy it at all and as can be seen have pretty much forgotten it.
  21. As Mike says above, Put it in a concrete/lean mix for backfill. You might find if you try to use it as a mortar it's very lumpy when mixed up. For the slab bed just use Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and sharp sand. Apart from post mix we steer clear of the ready mixed bags as in a couple of words they're overpriced crap.
  22. The Google link is Eldon's sidings just North of Norden, no buildings are allowed in this area hence why it's not been adopted for that use already. Furzebrook is here. If I've done it correctly) https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.6566206,-2.0974135,531a,35y,22.24h/data=!3m1!1e3 This is the site the railway hopes to obtain some time in the future to use as an engineering/storage base, there are though issues regarding its re-use (the original planning permission) and it must be noted that the amount of money the railway would need to spend on getting the site up and running, would probably preclude an overhaul of the T3 for some considerable time.
  23. Day one.....so you must be into double figures for the amount of 'cut ups' already
  24. We lived in Nagasaki which IIRC was 3'6"......although my memory could be playing tricks.
