  1. It's actually a much maligned material, for these it will do the job perfectly well and is not that much different in the thickness Jason's using to card. I use it for the core of buildings sometimes as if treated correctly it will be fine. It's just not much use as a stepladder or diving board........
  2. I wouldn't spray any water over MDF it will just soak it up like a sponge and expand. The completed ones will be fine, they are tabbed and glued and will only lose their shape if forced to (hence the block on top)
  3. How long was the block on it for? Usually with MDF if it's mishapen it can be forced into another plane, although thinking about it, it only sticks up about 1-1.5mm which it could spring back to......hmmmmm... I'd be tempted to use it as your test piece but to the finished standard, then when you've done with it put some weight on it and alternate it between a damp/dry enviroment and see if that works. I've some 6mm mdf in the workshop at present which is cut into 300mm squares and I'm having to keep weight on it overnight until it's fixed in place to stop it moving.
  4. Visited last year and annoyed the wife by walking up it wih ease. Nice day out to see Magna Carta. Back on topic. As it's MDF keep a weight on it for a few days and it should take the twist out, it's notorious for bending and twisting depending on how it's stored.
  5. There is the drop of the dollar to take into account. Sterling could be stable for some time but the US $ might bounce around all over the place.
  6. I wouldn't actually agree with that, I'm not sure that the take up for the APT-E was quite what was hoped although I understand they all sold. My interest is in No1 (Stirling Single), the Sturrock tender has been cancelled for that, which on the face of it looks bad news. But when I spoke to Rapido they say it's because the take up for the original tender far outstripped their expectations and made the Sturrock tender unviable.
  7. I'll have you know the Sandhills are the Mountains of Bedfordshire...or they were until the GN dug them away.
  8. I'll get him in May when he comes over. Be a walkover....coming from Lincolnshire I only have to stand on a gradient and it'll confuse him.....
  9. They'll all be accessing porn on their smartphones so wouldn't notice him anyway.
  10. Looking at the Huntley film you linked to before, at 6 minutes No 1 is leaving Hitchin and you can see the dark colour of the teak but there are some very light coloured panels which are probably replacements. Gives it a bit of a battenburg look.
  11. If you refer to the recent colour pics (Manchester & Peterborough) you'll see that the general tone is quite dark but that there are some bleached panels in places, I'm guessing as they went through the shops just before the celebrations there were a lot of repairs carried out so there is a lot of variation in the teak itself. the original panels are 50 years old and have been subjected to a lot of UV hence the dark colour. The finish is really good but by 1938 the colours were very uneven. I'd be happy with how you've done them so far.........I feel a challenge coming up......Resin vs MDF.....
  12. Is that what's beyond the M&GN on Little Bytham?
  13. Wasn't one of the locomotives running a few years ago and they'd possibly laid a bit of dual gauge? Or am I remembering "Alternative facts".....
  14. Because it sounded hilarious.......then I sobered up...
  15. I do remember a similar mistake elsewhere which was compounded by the poster replying that he'd been "Hoist by his own Le Petomaine" I'll leave others to translate...
  16. Retirement is the usual reason which is understandable, This doesn't mean a range isn't viable anymore.
  17. Dead right about cash flow, I've said it before here many times. I get about one pay cheque a year (although it tends to be a biggie) and the art of this job is planning your expenditure around what you've got so as not to borrow. I must admit I'm not a fan of partnerships, that's based on my experiences and those I've seen working. Those where there is a clearly defined role so one is a 'sleeping partner' that stumps up cash for a defined return seem to work the best. Others where the parties are responsible for different roles tend to get into trouble. The best business model for me is Dictator......well that's what they say I am....
  18. Even though I regularly check that this PC and the programs used on it are set to UK English, it will occasionally slip into US English for some spelling. I'm one of those that looks at the keyboard when I type so unless I'm vigilant I miss these US spellings. Although you can read posts before hitting 'submit' you can still miss many things as the brain will read what you expect to see. . . . . . . . . that's my excuse anyway....
  19. I'll make a comment on that, that might be relevant. I have a budget for this hobby and think carefully about what I buy, I am reluctant to place deposits on items as it ties up my available budget, this may look like I don't have the money to buy anything and yet the invoices I paid in January amounted to just short of £20,000 and we're looking at spending money this month on a holiday as well as work. Does this mean I have £50 for a deposit....no, because it's a different budget.
  20. Yes I have the the Bill Simpson books, plus a few others on the Ox-Cam. Early days it was LNWR, then LMS but when you get to the late 50's and into the 60's the majority of stock East of Bedford seems to be BR Eastern rather than Midland. I've done a lot of research on the GN as it's my main interest but eventually I'll have to cross over to the 'Dark Side'
  21. Looking good. Whats planned to push/pull these ? I haven't even begun to look at LNWR stock for Sandy yet, I haven't got much knowledge either, so things might have to be a bit "generic" for a while
  22. There is a sub clause to this which is our current site access, apparently picking up little Johnny from the nearby school counts. Should have seen her face when she returned and found a grab lorry double parked against her and reaching over her Golf.
  23. Kemilway, I'd forgotten about that one. Another one that takes the money and doesn't deliver, I know someone who has ordered about 4 months ago and received nothing, happy to take the money but no contact about whether the stock is there or not or even if you'll get your money back. Springing into life......more like take it out and shoot it..
