  1. Given that a lot of people are complaining about uncumfortable seats, noisy trains and being treated like cattle, all true by the way! I would think that a very fast commute or any journey at very high speed would be preferable. Remember people used to say things like, if men were meant to fly they would have wings! The world we live in today was created by people who tried things, not by people who kept saying it can't be done. I think the days of the journey are fast being replaced by just getting there.
  2. I really wish I could agree, but population density and wage differences mean people will put up with crappy conditions on trains.Check out commuter trains in Japan.
  3. Don't forget in the real world gore is the result of unpleasant incidents. Taking the true impact away and sanitizing life leads to worse things happening. We should all be sickened by the unpleasant side of life, maybe then it might get better.
  4. Of course the really sensible people spend loads of money on booze, so they can prove they are stupid and suffer the after effects. Question, have you ever managed to have an interesting conversation with one of the mockers? A hobby requires intelligence, being cool does not.
  5. Humming. Probably didn't know the words... Where's me coat?
  6. Back in the dark ages, before they invented, anything really! There was an advert for smoking Craven A that went , sore throat? Smoke Craven A to ease the problem! Probably not word for word but that was the gist. Don't know if it worked......
  7. Always remember that life is the biggest risk. It's terminal you know!
  8. Well they used to say that people at Blackpool were not really swimming, just going through the motions.. I'll get me coat!
  9. Can't agree about massive infrastructure requirement. How many trains are fitted with WiFi now?Driver in a control centre, think huge train set. Singapore has one of these now!
  10. Just to point out that every train involved in an accident was driven by a human! And not just trains.
  11. Apparently Mr. Icke thinks they are all camouflaged lizards!
  12. Hello Joe, great modelling here and you have a wonderful attitude! Just like to say that when creating anything, if you like it then it's good, if you don't then it isn't. As the prof. says removing unwanted layout can be easy. It can also be very therapeutic. Paul
  13. Arghh!! Most governments would love that#*#@@$.About automation. I've been fitting robots and automated systems in factories for 30 years. Yes they have been around a long time. Robotic systems are far more advanced than a lot of people think, and have rendered enormous amount of people redundant. The GPS systems positional systems are getting better and better. Forget signals auto trains do not need them, they can pick up information from a transmitter. What usually decides the installation of auto systems is finance. Once the payback time has been cleared costs drop massively. As for the social impact, that is the very worrying aspect. Njee, the other jobs are not necessarily there old mate.
  14. Two power cars and four coaches, these should really move. Not bad for an old design!
  15. After reading an article in Trains mag. It would seem that Genesee and Wyoming prefer EMD (Caterpillar)loco's to those made by GE.
  16. Unfortunately it's not just the railway industry. There has been a move to de-skill everything. Skilled people command respect and better pay. Bad managers don't like this, good managers don't care, they just care about doing things properly.
  17. It is going to get interesting when we have driverless trains. This is much closer than may be thought. They are in use and spreading in other parts of the world.
  18. A good example of what happens when people ignore rules is the banking collapse in 2008. We are all still paying for that!
  19. My point is that the railway staff at the point of the problem could not do something, or they would have. It wasn't because they didn't give a toss. They have to follow the rules, to quote Judge Dredd, It's the law! This seems to be a fact you cannot grasp. The people on the train were in an uncomfortable situation not a life or death situation. I've been stuck on a train for four hours, at no time was my life threatened. What I'm suggesting is that you may prefer it if the rules were changed to match the road! Then everyone can do what they like. What wonderful coarse of action would you suggest?
  20. Yes, I see where you're coming from but before you ask, no you can't put a 37 in my garden!Swimbo won't let me..
  21. It is completely valid. The police don't give a toss about the people who are stranded, often for hours. And the highways department take no responsibility for the accident. Does that explain it for you?
  22. "Their selfish desire to avoid the danger of disiplinary action or PROSECUTION" is in your mind obviously different from the "selfish actions " of people having to get to work to avoid being sacked regardless of conditions.IT IS NOT THE DRIVERS FAULT! Regarding the next post about nobody accepting the costs , this is not a red herring at all! These people who will not spend the necessary money are the whole cause! Red herring my backside...
