  1. Hopefully this is in the correct section but please move it if necessary Purchased a Metcalfe PO247 stone railway bridge for my micro layout but has anyone else found it more suitable for double width track. I am only using single track until under it that leads to a fiddlestick. Just seems a bit wide. What do others think? Johna
  2. Track and points have been ordered and once the weather improves I will be able to get into the garage to construct the baseboard using the traditional 2x1 timber and 9mm ply top. Johna
  3. A bit late but........ I did start to build my version of "Brew Street" and even had a couple of engine running up and down it. However this didn't last too long as there was only a small number of moves you could make without getting board. The layout was put way and forgotten about until this afternoon while looking l for a set of points . I don't want to alter the size of the layout but do you think adding a sector plater would help improve the movement of wagons around the layout? I suppose what I am asking is what side of the layout would you add a sector plate and what type should I use? Regards Johna
  4. Being a new subscriber to BRM from February 2018 I didn't get the Jan 18 issue with the start of Phil Parkers new micro layout called Didsbury Green. I have tried to download a digital issue but you seem to be unable to buy a single issue so can anyone tell the supplier of the baseboard, the size of the layout and the type of track used . ie code 100/75 please. I do have the Feb/March issues Regards Johna
  5. Many thanks folks for all the advice and photos. I will do the research on each one and let you know which one I decide to use Cheers Johna
  6. Hi I am looking for suggestions as to the best materials to use for making harbour walls in 00 gauge. Thanks Johna
  7. Does anyone have any experience using a Peco n gauge electrofrog point and seep point motor with switch. Would like to know how reliable they are as I have limited room under the baseboard for anyother type of point. I have looked at using wire in a tube but can't figure out how to fit a switch to it. Also operation is from the side of the layout. Thanks Johna
  8. Grandson decided to build a small oo gauge shunting layout on a shelf 30" X 9" using 2 peco settrack points. Knowing the space he has for a layout is not great I suggested an inglenook type layout and a 15" fiddlestick length of track. Now I don't live near him but he has a ago and made a good job of the track and electrics. The biggest problem he is having is his 0-4-0 locos stalling at the points. He intends to fit surface point motors to them and add kadee coupler's to the wagons etc. Is there a way to improve the quality of the peco settrack points? The lad is really keen but he is finding it frustrating at times with the stalling. Johna
  9. Good looking layout. One question. How do you operate the point? By hand etc. Cheers Johna
  10. Andrew what a cracking little layout. Now you have given me an idea. What size is each baseboard and do you have any photos of it just as you have removed it from the box before assembly. Cheers Johna
  11. Cracking diarama Stu. Just which I had your skill to make the canal and bridge. Johna
  12. A trip out today has been worthwhile - Two cake boxes and bases purchased so the planning can start. Johna
  13. Will try using the thin corrugated card as suggested by Simon. A futher search on the old RMweb pages had takem to to a box fe calked "Stooperdale Engineering Ltd" It uses 1 point and a sector plate. Phil - i have always admired you layout and only wish i could build track like that. For niw i will be using a Peco point.
  14. Thanks for the advice folks. Another question. Do I put the track and point directly unto the base of the box file or do a need to make a sub baseboard first.? Cheers Johna
  15. Interesting idea using the lid as the track bed. Just not sure how to get power to the track and surface point motor. The lids would definitely need strengthening and would there not be a gap between each box because of this.
  16. Doing a bit of window shopping today while the good lady wife was in a well know high street shop I entered "The Works" for the first time as they had a couple of railway books for sale. I didn't buy them but came away with 2 box files for a fiver. Haven't a clue why I purchased them but there you go. Back home tonight while looking browsing the web for ideas etc. I started thinking of a tuning fork layout but build it inside the two box files. I think I have a RH point and a peco surface point motor somewhere. Some sort of industrial setting would be best. Don't think I need to go to a third box as I can use a cassette at the headshunt for extra length . Scratch built buildings will be needed and as is normal practice these days everything will fit inside the boxfiles. I am looking for photos of tuning fork layouts for inspiration. Cheers Johna
  17. Just found this cracking looking layout and had got me thinking about building something very similar except I will move the loading bay to the outer track on the edge of the baseboard.
  18. Hi, I am interested in knowing where you purchased the blue and white tiles for your building ? Thanks johna
  19. Looking for some advice please. I am scratch building an engine shed using brick paper and was wondering that is the best way to join each corner so that the bricks match up and you don't see the joining? Johna
  20. Thanks Si for the photos. Oh, I do love those Lisbon trams. John
  21. Folks Following a tidy up today in my loft today I found an old Ratio Timber merchants kit (oo gauge -525) purchased many years ago. The kit has got me thinking about building a micro layout based around a timber yard. However,I am unsure if there was such a thing in real life. Did timber merchants use the railway to receive/ship timber goods and what sort of wagons would have benn used?. A google search has produced very little information but maybe someone from RMweb may know and could point me in the right direction. Thanks Johna
  22. What a great looking Tram starter set. May have to buy one soon johna
