  1. One would think that the vacuum reservoir would be there to aid the release of the brake not the application. Al Taylor.
  2. They aren't the normal lamp brackets on 1570, it has the usually ones attached on the buffer housing............
  3. What ever the purpose of those brackets, one on no2 end survived till withdrawn, and the ones at no1 end had gone by 1981. Al Taylor
  4. Various mods were done to the speedo by BR in later years, the main one been the fitting of an electronic system. A speed probe was fitted on the gearcase of no2 traction motor and a new meter case fitted in the cab. The original speedo was driven off the side rod not axle driven. The whole speedo generator was combined with a mileage counter. Al Taylor
  5. Suspect that is the Donny breakdown train, note the 75ton crane behind the bridge. Al Taylor.
  6. Seen several vans were the canvas had been renewed on wagons that had come in to Dairycoates WRD for that repair only. Al Taylor
  7. When I did my trainer the trainer course for the 60s it was definitely a snowplough. The 156 and 158s have both obstacle and snowploughs, generally Scottish and ex Scottish ones.
  8. It's an optical illusion. I made up all those panels using lamps off withdrawn BRCWs. Al Taylor
  9. Just use a BG, as when the early brakes were withdrawn these were used.
  10. The 31s around this time were having a problem with piston rings. These had been made by a different manufacturer and were machined the same as previous, this led to oil throwing from recently overhauled power units. The two lamps on the platform would suggest the coaches are connected to the ETH shore supply. Al Taylor
  11. The tail lights open upwards on a Crewe build Brush open to the side. The horn grill on a Crewe one is a lot flatter than its Brush counterpart. And if you look at the top of the cab between the windows a Crewe one has "eye brows " over each window whereas a Brush one has continuous "eyebrow". Al Taylor.
  12. Phil your 1103 looks good just as we East Cost types remember them, but as it isn"t meant be ETH fitted how come its got the ETH jumper. Bachmann fitted a few 47 buffer beams with the Generator style jumpers on locos that never had ETH. Al Taylor
  13. That runner is a bit of a one off, its a demountable tank flat. On most of the conflate the air pipework is below the vehicle and also have a few short lengths of rail fixed to the floor. Later on a conduit run was fitted and the installation of electric marker lights in the 350 style.
  14. Doncaster started overhauls in 1977ish, well before the rerubbishment.
  15. Re the cross bracing, when I was an apprentice I can remember HAAs coming in to Dairycoates for repairs. If they had cross bracing they would burnt off, this was irrespective of any other repairs. This was mid 1977. Would assume that other WRDs would be doing the same at this time. Most of the cross bracing was bent, no doubt due to bucket loading. Al Taylor.
  16. It looks like the diagrammed RU. The kitchen should always be south and the bar on the RMB should be south on the Pullman diagrams. I have been on the Hull Pullman with 2 RUs in the formation when changing over vehicles, both RUs were in use.
  17. The coil springs also have rubber block between steel plates these act as dampers on the coil springs. The leaf spring with this type of mounting also controls the lateral movement of the ale.
  18. Used to see GPVs at Stainforth. From memory these van were unloaded and the contents taken to a storage site near Dunscroft. Al Taylor.
  19. 1D03 was the 1312 to Kings Cross it was joined with 1A26 at Doncaster. Was usually the loco off the Garston/Trafford Park Freightliner that morning, loco would go LE to Doncaster to work the inbound service, that formed this working. An extra TSO was usually added at Paragon to strengthen the southbound working and its later northbound service which returned to Hull as the last London. Al Taylor
  20. ETH has no control of the engine governor other than that the governor will react under certain circumstances to change in ETH load by varying its output to the fuel pump linkage. The early 31/4s had a slightly different ETH cubicles and AVR, hence 31161 becoming 31400....... Al Taylor retired BR electrician, technical instructor and riding inspector.
  21. A photo of 40129 undergoing the gas axe at Donny works. A Kevin Davis photo on Flickr. At this end end you can see the back of the battery boxes then the cubicle before reaching the power unit. Al Taylor
  22. Hence the warnings on class 91 internal doors about pacemakers etc. There are some quite strong fields inside the 91s, which could do all sorts of odd things, still have a few magnetised tools caused by this............
  23. The compressor/s where in the way at no1 end drivers side. no2 end opposite the boiler were the batteries, load reg and the cut out switch. Hope that jogs your memory Ken. Al Taylor.
  24. Several depots relied on the ODM electricians for servicing the lighting along with the AWS batteries.
