  1. I use something like these for track power https://www.molex.com/molex/products/family?key=standard_093&channel=products&chanName=family&pageTitle=Introduction&parentKey=wire_to_wire_connectors (I'm using DCC). I use the twelve way versions for six busses around the layout (5 power districts and 1 pair for a reversing section) For low current connections (signal lights, point control relay feeds, track circuit inputs) I use 37pin D connectors https://www.rapidonline.com/truconnect-37-way-solder-lug-plug-15-0515 Andi
  2. Have Lenz finally decided to implement CVs 66 (Forward trim) and 95 (reverse trim) that have been part of the NMRA spec for donkeys years? Andi
  3. I'm starting a new business manufacturing these... http://c8.alamy.com/comp/C9CT8T/vintage-Hornby-railways-winding-key-for-clockwork-model-trains-C9CT8T.jpg Andi
  4. The answer there is transition curves, the curve starts gradually and gets tighter, the cant goes with it. Dagworth had cant on the curves, around a millimetre was plenty. I've not bothered on Ravensclyffe though, the curves are much gentler. Andi
  5. Three contractors are bidding to refurbish the fence at 10 Downing street. One is from Birmingham another is from Liverpool, and the third is some bloke from London. All three go with a Downing Street official to examine the fence. The Brummie contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. "Well," he says, "I figure the job will run about £900. £400 for materials, £400 for my crew, and £100 profit for me." The Scouse contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, "I can do this job for £700. £300 for materials, £200 for my crew, and £200 profit for me." The bloke from London doesn't bother to measure or figure, but leans over to the Downing Street official and whispers, "£2,700." The official, incredulous, says, "You didn't even measure like the others! How did you come up with such a high figure?" The bloke whispers back, £1000 for me, £1000 for you, and we hire the guy from Liverpool to do the job." "Done!" replies the government official..... And that is how Carillion was born.....
  6. What thickness of plasticard are you looking to fix to the MDF? I've used standard EvoStik (known as EvilStink in this house!) to fix acres of 40 and 60thou to plywood without problems. I've even used it to glue embossed brick plasticard direct to plywood, just don't touch the plasticard once the adhesive has grabbed until it has gone off completely. Andi
  7. Brass is a non-ferrous alloy... so is nickel-silver.... Both solder very easily Andi
  8. I'd ask for the 5 minutes back that I've just wasted trying to make sense of this... Andi
  9. Both, you can make it simple, or you can go complex. Both options are valid. It depends on what you want from your layout. With something like Ravensclyffe it gets pretty complicated, 100 or so track circuits, 5 power districts, three reversing sections, computer control of points... Whereas Bow Locks has none of that, just two wires. Andi
  10. Terminators = not needed, no one should be recommending them Filters = maybe my comment is correct
  11. So, my reference to terminators being useless was correct then... If they are filters they are there for a totally different purpose. Terminators are intended to stop data reflection on the end of the line in RS485 applications and are irrelevant in DCC power buses, filters do a totally different job and I can see that there *MAY* be a use for them. My point on terminators was in reference to reply no 2 Please withdraw your nasty "tosh" comment Andi
  12. There are many variants of High Speed pan, I was asking whether the APT type was the same as the 92 rather than stating that they were different. APT carried Stone Faively when built as the High Speed pan didn't exist then, later they were changed. Andi
  13. With such a launch of unproven equipment it's not worth sending up a useful payload as the risk of loss is too great. For tests they normally chuck a lump of concrete up there... this time they used the car for PR. And it does make a great title for this thread... Andi
  14. Yep, that's my old layout, Dagworth. Nice to know that it is still remembered. I still have it here and I am planning on refurbishing it with larger corner boards to solve some serious operational problems. Keep an eye on the new one too, Ravensclyffe http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/3288-ravensclyffe/ Andi Andi
  15. There is no need for terminators, where would you stop? One on the end of every siding? Every track section? If you have to fit terminators to make things work then you need to look far deeper at your wiring because you've got a bigger problem that needs to be solved at source. The only people recommending terminators will be people making money by selling them. Andi
  16. Being as mine is going to be running Pan Up on Ravensclyffe the pan needs to stay vertical! Andi
  17. Peter mentions close coupling, that doesn’t apply across most of the set as it is articulated but did set me thinking, how feasible is sprung corridor connections so they remain in contact with each other? That would be a very noticeable feature. Andi
  18. https://www.expressandstar.com/news/local-hubs/staffordshire/stafford/2018/01/08/hixon-rail-crash-rescuers-relatives-and-villagers-mark-fatal-staffordshire-crashs-50th-anniversary/
  19. I've had four different DCC systems, ZTC, Lenz, ESU ECoS and Bachmann Dynamis and I come back to my Lenz set 100 every time, bombproof reliability. Andi
  20. Don't try to cut the windows out, build using a thicker plasticard (I use 40 or 60 thou) then mark out, then drill well inside the marks and file the windows slowly out to your marks. Andi
  21. if you follow the rail of 2 that is closest to 3 all the way around the loop it becomes live regardless of the position of point C. You need to put a plastic joiner on the non-frog rail of point B where it leads into section 2 where I have coloured the track red Hope that helps Andi
  22. can you provide a track plan? Edit: and congratulations on 1000 posts Andi
  23. Yes, after all the work of doing the drawings make the layout into a proper railway where the models run on the same power as the real thing Andi
