  1. Strange that Bernard I have been using it 'with' anti virus for ages without any issue at all.. Good warning though if yours has picked up on it. Is this one any better? http://www.techradar.com/
  2. If in doubt I always go to somewhere like this. http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/laptops/1405716/best-laptop-for-students-uk-the-best-laptops-for-school-college-and-university-in
  3. Hi Clive I realised that there was no criticism in your OP merely an observation of what you found (or didn't). Sorry if I appear to have made out anything to the contrary. Not being involved with any club now I have no idea of what the demographic is these days. I will make a generalisation here which I realise could also be wrong but I doubt if there will be many left active these days that are interested in building such a layout merely due to what has been suggested above in that most people want to model what they know or knew. I will be 64 this year and I cannot remember steam without green diesel. Even though I saw them in my spotting days I still model the BR Blue era for some reason. I suspect that in years to come no one will want to model BR Blue either. Mind you by then they will probably be modelling driverless trains or something else that I shudder to think.
  4. I eluded to this earlier but the Caistor club is a very small club. In my time as a member we had about five or six 'active' members. The annual show has always (by many) been regarded as a quality show and well worth a visit. It is very dependent on the availability of layouts within a small catchment area to avoid the paying of huge expenses. The club cannot afford to pay for people to travel for miles to exhibit as the funds really are not there. 'If' they were to do that then the club would not make a profit which is what keeps the club going and hence no club and no show. Catch 22! There is a difference between historic modellers who choose to model a small time in history such as part of a war scene and the model railway fraternity. One is all about history and the other is I suggest more about trains. In any event what is available in a small area is what is available and I suppose we just have to accept that. Having been involved in this show in the distant past which included making tea and cooking meals for exhibitors for two days and not having an opportunity to even look round the show I am only too well aware of the effort involved in even a small show like this. I for one even though I never managed to visit this year am just happy that the effort is put into a show for others to enjoy and if what I wanted to see wasn't there there would be evidence of the effort by others to hopefully entertain paying visitors.
  5. Having moved away from Caistor some 4 years ago I no longer am in contact with any of the members of the Caistor club and did not attend this years show. I know they changed Exhibition Manager after I left but cannot recall who it is. I suspect that there is a shortage of all steam layouts in the quite small catchment area that Caistor draw upon. They are a small club and tended to rely on the usual suspects for their layouts Cleethorpes, Hull and others from not too far away. You can only get what is offered without paying lots of expenses for exhibitors to travel far. As has been mentioned people tend to model what they know or knew and those that knew only steam will be very far and in between. Even the club's principle layout though predominantly steam had green diesels on it. When I was a member they were planning a new exhibition layout and the discussion was what era to model. 'Modern image' that hackneyed description was the decision but still which era. For me I wanted BR Blue as that is what I remember most although my spotting days started with steam. I was outvoted and the current scene was agreed upon by the younger members because it is what they know and what floats their boat. I doubt very much that it would be a conscious decision to ignore steam only but a decision made by what is readily available to them as a small club.
  6. No offence meant I just thought with the recent attacks in London where many people have been killed that expression 'a couple of hours to kill' has taken on a rather different meaning. I realise it was a bit of an off the wall comment from myself but it just struck me as how life and what we say can change. Whatever you decide upon to pass your time I hope you enjoy it.
  7. In light of recent events I would have thought of a better way of posing the same question. St Pancras would get my vote as well.
  8. I have ordered stuff twice this week and both have turned up as ordered and one the next day. Very happy.
  9. Ordered some track from here on line last week. Thought having checked the order twice I had done it right and hit send. Received a call the next day from Dan (couldn't tell which size) to ask if the points and the track were for the same layout as I had ordered code 75 of one and 100 of the other. Doh! Having confirmed that they were for the same layout and that I am an eejit Dan sorted it out for me. Managed to add a couple of other bits while he was on and he rang me back to tell me it had all been done. Today the parcel came delivered by Courier as a free upgrade. Packed well and as ordered. I could not be happier and most certainly will use them again. Dan was very helpful and it was a genuine pleasure to receive such good service.
  10. Beat me to it Brian. There is also the aspect of bought in good faith and paid value for it 'generally' means you get to keep it BUT you can't sell it on as by then you know it is stolen. So the weeks spent at Training school weren't completely wasted for us.
  11. It is a very long time since I owned an NCE but I seem to recall there was a way that you could latch one of the commands so it would do this every time. Maybe have a look at the Power Cab instructions before you delve too deep into thinking it may be a problem with the decoder. Of course it well could be and I am sure someone else may have experience of these decoders which I don't. Just something sprang to mind about about this latching with the Power Cab.
  12. Have you seen this? http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/125527-ECoS-and-latest-tts-decoders/page-2&do=findComment&comment=2849246 and this? http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/122713-Hornby-railroad-diesel-jerky-slow-running-under-dcc/&do=findComment&comment=2720196 Not exactly the same symptoms as yours but somewhere to start maybe. It would seem Hornby are aware of a problem and some remedies have been discussed and found to work.
  13. Many many moons ago there was somewhere a list of car alternatives for spray paint. Don't have a clue where it would be but if there is an alternative to these troublesome cans surely a list could be useful once more. EDIT http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/41328-colour-matches-for-halfords-rattle-cans/&do=findComment&comment=443694
  14. Whilst I realises that some on here have a dislike for Facebook or whatever name you want to call it today someone from the Lincolnshire Railways group posted a link to a Youtube video about the closure of St Marks. It is about 45 minutes long but I found it interesting so thought I would link it in here in case others do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U13BavFqA3o&feature=share It left me with a couple of thoughts. 1. Why did I do all my spotting at Central and none here? 2. How much video has improved since the 80's.
  15. Having just left the funeral industry there are SO many songs that I just cannot listen to any more! There is of course a list in the Industry of the top ten songs played at a funeral and although I cannot recall all of them Angels by Robbie Williams is right up there.
  16. Indeed Ian a very good point about blog versus thread. I never read blogs but have spent many (too many) an hour or so catching up on threads. Too old for blogs I guess.
  17. If you are worried about making your home identifiable and therefore vulnerable to theft then the simple answer is don't blog anything that would do that. Providing you keep that in mind you will be no more vulnerable to theft than anyone else. As regards what the Insurance would do in the event of a claim who knows? You could ring them and ask them but I doubt you will receive an informed answer. There was a thread on here before about crime prevention posted by someone who should know. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/29121-crime-prevention/ Is your house more likely to be vulnerable because you have a blog No if you follow the good advice above from those that have replied. If you would enjoy blogging then go for it as I am sure many on here will be interested in the content and enjoyment is what the hobby is about so be sensible about what you blog and you will be no more at risk than the next man. Who said I was paranoid?
  18. Yes it was a surprise to me as well. I guess cost maybe was the reason as even in those days they would have bean counters.
  19. Rode across to Sleaford yesterday for the 25th Anniversary Classic Car Show. Second time I have been and once again glorious day with sun and clear skies. How do they do that? Took a few pictures but rather than just post a load of pictures of the usual fare here are a couple of the odd balls. Just as we were leaving there was a fly past by the one remaining flying Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight as until fixed all Merlin engined aircraft in their care are grounded. This one had the Griffon engine. Sadly by this time the camera had thrown a wobbly so no pictures of that. So just a bit of an overall view to start with. I am sure some on here must have an interest in Fire Appliances so here are two of Lincoln's finest. Followed by something for the weekend! Go on then otherwise someone would say What no Moggies! OK not old so some may say not Classic as such but there can't be many of these about. Included this because I now a couple of you have a 'thing' for them, as would I could I afford the fuel. Then what I in my ignorance at first sight thought was a Lancia even with the clue on the roof. Must have been a BOGOF offer on at the time. Lastly and for no other reason than despite being a motorcyclist of years standing still have a soft spot for them as I passed my test on one at the tender age of 16.
  20. Seemed to have strayed from the OP's question a bit. So yes the new engines are far smaller as a rule than we maybe were used to but far better on performance in general terms. Obviously there will be some odd mismatches between models with gear ratios and engines as discussed but a road test soon sorts that out. All the talk of fuel consumption and whether it is good or poor or whether it meets the Manufacturers claims is a different subject altogether. First of all every car I have driven of late (and motorbikes) has had a digital readout of fuel consumption that when compared to the more accurate way of zeroing the trip meter and filling brim to brim has been out by some margin to show the vehicle is doing better than it is. Secondly it is well known in the motoring press that Manufacturers figures are meaningless and as such What Car have a complete section about it. https://www.whatcar.com/truempg/mpg-calculator How anyone can possibly say what mpg a given car will do is beyond me when none of us drive exactly the same way nor on the same routes with the same conditions. An average is just that and the fact that one person can achieve 46mpg and another 52mpg means nothing at all in the real world. Finally there will be differences between fuels of different brands and different RON ratings but saying that Supermarket fuel has damaged a car on a long journey with one tank full is beyond ridiculous. I would just love to see some actual facts to substantiate such a wild statement.
  21. Even quite new Mazda MX5 s are known to rust out from the sills.
  22. Happened to be passing Humberside Airport today and this was doing circuits and bumps. At least five whilst we were there. Well when I say bumps just circuits then as it never touched down. C17 Globemaster.
