  1. Morning all... Sunny but quite cold out here, and crummy at home, according to the weather app. However, temperatures are indeed predicted to rise next week. It certainly is about time! Nothing much else to report, aside from us heading home some time around noon, I guess. Enjoy your day, everyone – far as this is currently possible in the UK.
  2. Morning all... Needed to have some time off after this week's events. I don't think there will ever be such a thing like a pleasant kind of funeral, but MiL's certainly was dignified and compassionate. It but is odd how, once again, the sun came out soon after the funeral yesterday – much like it had been after my grandparents' funerals. Makes you wonder whether it will really have been a coincidence only. Hope you're all well and I'll certainly again be online more frequently, now that everything's over.
  3. Morning all. It's been snowing fairly heavily since Monday night, so everything's blanketed in white outside. Inside, it's a strange mood, what with that unusual kind of quasi-normality that settles in after a loss like this. Of course, it does help to have things to do or to be talking about things which as often as not are completely ordinary in nature, though at other times, the reality of it all hits home. On several occasions, I did find myself doing something or other around the house, and subconsciously expecting to see MiL in the next room. Do try to enjoy your day, folks!
  4. Morning all... Snowing heavily again, just in time for my setting off to Leipzig in a while. Oh well! I'll be keeping in touch, of course.
  5. Morning all... Slept in a bit longer today to recover a bit after all that's been happening this week. Bright and sunny outside, but expected to turn crummy during the night. I think tidying up will be called for today.
  6. Well, I think I'm glad I went ahead with the exam as I feel it went well. I even had some 20 minutes to spare when I had written out all there'd been to say - which was just as well after more than three hours of continuous writing. Thanks for thinking of me, folks. It means a lot to me!
  7. Morning all... On my way to the exam, which'll commence at 9. And a crisp and clear morning it is, too:
  8. Thanks, folks. I guess it would be best indeed if I went forward with the remaining exams rather than setting me back by more than six months. Elise said she was sure nobody would mind if I did. I wonder what I might do to limit the pressure until I'm through with the Friday exam, though.
  9. Morning all... Feeling quite under the weather since yesterday as we were told MiL had suddenly and totally unexpectedly passed away in the afternoon. What's making things even more difficult for me personally is that I'm currently in my final exams, having written one of them yesterday. I will be talking to the exam office later today to see which options I might have. I also keep asking myself what MiL might have wanted me to do, of course...
  10. Afternoon all... Truly knackered on this end, so with all the snow outside – at least two inches indeed – I feel like catching a nap... Andy – sorry to hear this – no one should have to end up feeling like choosing this very final kind of "solution"...
  11. News flash – 2 to 4 inches of snow predicted to come upon us by tomorrow.
  12. I'm feeling a headache coming on, which I am quite sure will have to do with the Return of the Winter, for thankfully, today's classes were well-behaved. While they were working on some artistic assignments, I had a chat with two 5th year boys, who showed a surprising degree of awareness of advanced physics, such as those relating to black holes or the many-worlds concept from the field of quantum theory. One of the two proclaimed he wants to be a programmer as he thinks it appealing that in his understanding, there is no such thing as a completely unsolvable problem. That is not at a bad attitude at all, I should think!
  13. Morning all... Cold and dark and much too early, and I'd so like to sleep in, but that's not to be. Talk to you later...
  14. Sounds like a typical case of the left hand not knowing what the other does, Dave.
  15. Morning all... Temperature has dropped below 4°C, but it's still sunny at this time. Rain and snow to commence in the afternoon, it seems. Oh, the joy... Can't tell if I slept sufficiently well, which I think I'll find out around noon!
  16. I had another nap after breakfast as well as I felt too drained to do much of anything. Can only guess why, though in recent weeks it's been fairly hectic on this end at times. I'm currently preparing some baguettes in the oven and hope things'll improve after that. Chili con carne for dinner, too!
  17. Morning all (belatedly)... Weather's showing signs of deteriorating, but it's still balmy enough to leave the windows open. And I could well have another two or three hours of sleep...
  18. Morning all... Dull again and it's been raining over night, though it's still fairly balmy. Forecast for Monday but predicts us being back to -1°C. Yuck... – At least the daylight does last significantly longer already, which is a good thing! Enjoy your day, everyone...
  19. That is very good news indeed, DD! Fingers crossed that she'll be feeling much better now...
  20. Morning all... Brought SWMBO to the GP for a checkup and while I'm waiting, I said hello to these fellows: I'm sure they won't be happy when it turns cold again next week!
  21. I would think it's the combination of white and green outer walls, sky grey ceiling and grey and glistening pillars that's supposed to resemble a wet and misty tropical forest! At least that was the gist of an article I read about this renovation a couple of weeks ago.
  22. Could be the brown mosaic section on one side of the pillar is supposed to represent wood!
  23. Sorry to hear those news, Mike. It certainly is gut-wrenching what Alzheimer's can do to people who one will mostly have known as having been alert, bright and vital for all their lives. At least that's how I felt in Grandma's final months... On another matter: I previously posted this panoramic photo of the suburban section of Frankfurt Central Station, which is currently being renovated... ...and mentioned that the round pillars will have their old tiling replaced. Specifically, they're intended to look like this when finished: ...with a combination of mosaic and polished steel plating, augmented by indirect lighting around the top end. I understand the idea is for the renovated station to give the impression of a rainforest.
  24. Morning all... Nice to be waking up to the twittering of birds! Will be off to the library around 8 am and see to returning soonest as I have some more things to read up on. Cheers...
