  1. Good evening, I've been thinking about building detail such as pipework etc and one thing that puzzled me was how to attach the pipework to the buildings. I suppose I should make up some form of support but without a picture to work to it's tricky. For the walkway I added sections of I beam, but I'm sure the pipework wouldn't be held on with that... Or would it? I've also dug out some vents from a Peco sprue and some other bits and bobs for thinner section pipework so over the next few days I should get the buildings detailed up. Cheers
  2. While I'm browsing, here's another pic I didn't manage to upload last night... One of the resident pilots 08664 is seen resting on the headshunt while it's crew take a break. You can just make out the area above in the background which is still a bit of a building site as I may be modifying the bridge. To my eye, something doesn't look right about it. Cheers
  3. Hi JeffP, I think the tricky thing would be how to get that look without overdoing it on the model which is quite easy to do. What I'm going for is the less is more approach but I'll have a think about further weathering later on. For the moment I'm concentrating on landscape and building details. Not quite, the outside balcony you can see in the picture will continue on to the centre section and have a caged ladder leading to the roof. Cheers
  4. Hi JeffP, The fact that it isn't covered in muck was meant to be intentional as this section only represents the run round, headshunt into the coil handling warehouse and exchange yard (fiddle yard) to the left. The trackwork and surrounding areas will be weathered further in due course however. Thanks for the kind works Marc, Yes, having been down to Celsa a few times this year on field trips I was quite impressed at just how much pipework the buildings have around them. I've been having a little think about this and I have some Plastruct tubing to start with, but it's deciding where they go etc. Yes I need to add some vents. IIRC the Peco engine shed came with some and there should be bits of one in the loft somewhere in it's box. There's also at least two more sections of walkway to put up, just need to finish and paint them up. I'll also need a caged ladder but haven't looked around for that yet. It is a fine balance indeed. That's one of the many reasons it's been taking me this long. Yes, I want to see it completed as well. It really has taken me far tooooo long. Plus I want to start the new project soon to keep me busy over the winter so I'm determined to get this one finished. Thanks Brian, Were it not for your information on all things steelworks related, I probably wouldn't have got to where I am now. What a nice surprise, thanks very much. Not sure what I'm up to work wise yet but I'll let you know near the time. Hi Pannier Tank, Yes, it's one of their 'under the track' magnets. It comes with a steel backing plate to intensify the magnet when hidden under ballast etc. There is already one installed between 37904 and the BBA in the pic I posted. Thanks for the kind words. Knowing that people appreciate what I'm doing is one of the things that keeps me motivated, so I hope you'll come back again. Cheers
  5. Good evening, As promised here's a pic showing where I'm at. Apologies for the quality, it was only taken on a little pocket camera. Still a bit of detailing to be done but that will be added over time. 37904 has arrived with a service which has had traffic for Dragon Steels detached from the rear (off scene). It will now run round before continuing it's journey. The hole in the foreground is where a Kadee magnet will be housed, although it has yet to arrive. Comments and questions welcome as usual. More soon.
  6. Thanks for the replies and kind works folks. Hi porkie, Yes the Speedlink era took my fancy as well, mainly because it allows me to run short trains. (as I'm short on space at home) I've had a little thought about the Whiskey traffic but the wagons and containers would need to built, so maybe one for the back burner. Yes I did manage to find the thread in question and there was one interesting formation that took my fancy which could be scaled down a little to suit my space. Hi pompeydave, What can I say... It called to me. Haha! Oh not too big as I don't have much space at home. The scenic section wont be and any bigger than 4' put it that way, so not a big layout. I haven't no, but I'm on the lookout for it. The only Freight Only volumes I have are around England.
  7. Hi Mark, Thanks for the kind words. The project will develop at a slow rate to start with over the winter but I intend to chart the progress here. I've been reading about your ODAs back over on the DEMU forum and I think I have a Parkside Pipe kit somewhere. It would be nice to vary the wagons used on the MOD traffic rather than using long and short wheelbase vans all the time. Cheers
  8. Hello, With my current layout Dragon Steels now slowly heading towards completion I thought I would share an insight into the next project which will keep me busy over the winter months. The idea is a small Speedlink yard set somewhere in Scotland that handles traffic for local freight terminals. I had intended building something Scottish based later on, but the chance to purchase a class 26 at a bargain price was not to be missed and it was this that brought the project forward. That plus I've always had a soft spot for baby Sulzers anyway, there is just something about them even if they do sometimes sound like a bag of nails. I also have several items of Speedlink suitable stock at my disposal, so the idea kind of clicked really. There isn't anything to show for now as it's still in the early stages. More soon.
  9. Good evening, Well another week is almost over and yet more progress has been made. This week has seen me get some work at the bridge end of the layout completed and also some building detailing and weathering undertaken, oh and I also picked up a little something at a bargain price for my next project which is in the research/planning stage. One problem with steelworks buildings is that they tend to be slab sided structures with not much detail on some, except for some pipework maybe so I'm looking at what detailing I can do. If I can manage to get a picture uploaded to this old thing (the other half's laptop) then I'll see if I can get one up sometime next week. Cheers,
  10. Hi Paul, As Classix said they did indeed work to scotland in the early 90's. They used to take over from class 26's on MGR trains from Blindwells at Millerhill and I believe they also used to work to Thornton Yard for the same reason. Hope that helps
  11. Thanks Dave, I have to say it does feel good to see it coming together as well, it really has taken me too long to get this one finished. I think the burst of motivation has come about by thinking of the next couple of schemes and also a couple of field trips down to Celsa. Now that the new buildings are painted ad weathered, it's starting to look how I first imagined it. Cheers
  12. Thanks Brian, As ever, any information you think might be relevant is gratefully received. Thanks for posting the link, saves having to search for it again. Cheers
  13. Hi Brian, I'll be modelling up to about 1997/8 split into two time periods. Yes I saw a photo of a Red Adder which I think you might have posted so I'd like one or two of those. Funny you mention the one off Crocodile as I was looking at these in Lord & Butler the other week. As far as Short Billet wagons are concerned I think a couple of HEA type ones will do for now. While on the subject of internal users, I realise there were wagons for scrap/reject wire coils but were there any for scrap billets? Ooh yes please pics, fleet numbers etc will be most useful, I'll PM/Email you about that and some info on 08's will be required at some point as well if it's no trouble. Cheers
  14. Hi Brian, That's ok, no problem. I've been looking through your Celsa thread on the old RMweb which showed some times and I just wondered if they stayed the same or may have changed. If you could find out from your contact that would be great. I managed to observe a shunt on the 31/08 of the scrap bay. The DH50-1 was in the process of bringing empty VTG (ex Sheerness Steel) JXA wagons to Tidal along with three JNA (ex TML KEA). I noted down the movement and wagon numbers just for reference. It then got me thinking about operations on my layout and I started writing a basic operating sequence and I decided I'd like to have some internal traffic. Not sure how the MB (Merchant Bar) wagons might look on my layout as they're long bogie bolsters, but I'd certainly like some SB (Short Billet) wagons of the ex HEA/TTA variety. This week I've been weathering buildings and making a start on the detailing. I can see it coming together now and as I said further up I'll do a bumper update with some pictures soon, but for now while I have the motivation I'm happy to just crack on with things. Cheers PS: Hope you're enjoying Spain
  15. Thanks class 66, When I have a bit more done I'll do a bumper update with pictures. Looking at the last pic I posted further up this page showing the 08 with the mock buildings in the background I can see how much things have progressed. It's surprising what you can achieve when you have a burst of motivation. Today's job is to hopefully finish off the wall around the roadbridge, start weathering buildings and hopefully a bit of scenic play. Cheers
  16. Hi Peter, Thanks for that, I'll give it a go. I'll have to visit the layout thread again. Cheers
  17. Hi Peter, Nice to see Llanbourne and it's stock. Been a while since any postings in here so I hope you don't mind me dragging this one up. I read your article in Rex Modeller about having full bufferbeam pipework and kadees with much interest and I'm thinking of giving it a go. The only thing that bugs me as would those air pipes glued to little pieces of elastic be up to exhibition handling. The last thing anyone wants to do is constantly repair damaged pipework. All the best
  18. Just to keep this one going, I thought I'd report on how things are doing. This is coming together nicely now, the re-built buildings (the originals warped quite badly) are now finished, painted and detailing has commenced by the assembly of some walkway. Also the scenery is slowly advancing. I picked up some static grass to try out today,I've not tried this before so we'll see how it goes. I took my model of 37904 to visit Marc Smith's excellent layout Wales, Rails, Rain & Steel recently so that some pictures could be taken for an article I'm writing up. I'm really pleased with them, Marc did a really good job capturing the look of the model much better than I could. I wont duplicate the picture here (it's already in two topics on here) but I may post another sometime. I'm hoping once I've made progress with the layout to do a bumper update with pictures. At the moment though I'd rather just get on with the modelling while I have the motivation. Cheers all
  19. Blimey! I've just found this again. Not really keen on the blog idea for myself, I much prefer doing things in threads but I thought I'd better report that this loco is all finished having gone through a revamp in recent months. Cheers
  20. Seconded keefr! Nigella has something about her. Being one to have a go in the kitchen from time to time I like to catch her shows on occasion, purely for the cooking of course!
  21. Thanks very much for taking the photo's Marc, I really appreciated you using some of your free time to do them for me, I'll have to get you a beer. I just need to get the article written up now but I'll do a rough draft first. That's a lovely picture, I can almost hear 37904 working hard to bring the heavy scrap train in. It's also nice to see two slugs together again. I quite fancy doing one of the Ruston ones soon. It'll be a much simpler conversion compared to this one though. Although 37904's bodywork looks a little clean compared to the underframe in the picture, it does have some subtle streaking of dirt on the bodysides. The sector markings in the pictures I was working from were also in quite good condition so I decided not to go for the faded ones. Cheers again Marc PS: The other photo's came through ok thanks.
  22. Hi Andy, Thanks for that. Shame that the coil train isn't a priority at the moment. Having said that, I'll still be following this thread with interest. The wagon loads do look good, especially the billets from 1.5 x 1.5 evergreen. I have some to build myself at some point and I think those have captured the look of billets very well. All the best
  23. Hello chaps, Came across this thread while searching for something else the other night. Some very nice modelling all round although i must say I'm very interested in the progress your steel related stock is making as it is a keen interest of mine and led to the building of a steelworks inspired layout. Is there any further progress on the BAA/BBA wagons and? Best regards,
  24. Hi Marc, Sorry I missed your post. Yes it has been some time since I posted in here, the main reason being that I wanted to just spend time getting on with things rather than stopping to post up updates. Having said that there has indeed been some progress although there was a slight step back in that I had to rebuild the framework of my buildings as the previous attempts using mounting card had warped quite badly. The new ones use foamboard and I have to say seem much better and stronger but still light at the same time which is what I wanted. I've spent most of today getting them clad and deciding what to do about detailing, I even managed a little field trip down to Celsa this afternoon to grab a few pics with the digital pocket camera for reference and some very quick and basic detail scribbles on a note pad. Aside from the buildings, I also found looking at the slag dump near the water works interesting to look at. As I arrived there was a shunt in progress with the new Hunslet loco but it was well underway so no point in trying to grab photo's, that's twice I've missed shunts now. I dont suppose our mine of information (Brian R) knows when these shunts are carried out? Anyway yes, things are progressing although at my usual slow rate. I do have other schemes in mind so am looking forward to this being finished. Cheers
  25. Was good to chat and see Abercynon last weekend Brian, Thanks for the DVD's as well. All the best
