  1. Neil's post has reminded me of another relative who served. My Mum's Grandfather was with the Grenadier Guards in the Crimea and was awarded the Crimea Medal with 3 clasps. Alma, Inkerman and Sevastopol. He was also awarded the Turkish Crimea Medal. He was wounded at Inkerman. He suffered a severe gunshot wound to his right foot and ankle which meant that he had to have his right leg amputated. During his hospitalisation he was cared for by Florence Nightingale and ended up having a wooden leg which, no matter how damaged it became, he refused to get a new one. When he died the wooden leg was riddled with woodworm
  2. Morning all. Just a quick visit as I'm running a bit late. I'll try to look in later. Have a good day everyone
  3. Morning all. A few admin chores today and watching F1 highlights later. I didn't watch the VE celebration concert last night. No real reason apart from the fact that I don't particularly like Chris Evans as a presenter. Baz - That is never an easy conversation at the best of times. Interesting times ahead by the sound of it. Bob - Maybe you could hire Joe out to various layout owners for shows. John - Good to hear that you've arrived after an uneventful journey. Dick - Sounds like you need a holiday. I hope that today isn't too tiring after the last couple of weeks. Ian - Hope you don't do too much work in the garden. Trev and Tex still missing. I'm hoping that there is nothing too serious behind these. Have a good day everyone
  4. Everyone that I've dealt with from Aviva were definitely from north of the border and very easy to understand
  5. This is an area that I've been researching especially the formation and history of the NFS (National Fire Service). Part of the remit for the NFS at formation, was for common compatible equipment and training to allow all areas to work together. This remains part of the national standard for the current fire services.
  6. Congratulations Dom and Elise.
  7. Morning all. Not a lot happening today. The main requirement is to get rid of the 'thick head' sensation after last night. Have a good day everyone
  8. The only bit of military history was my mums cousin who served in the Royal Navy during both World Wars, He was based on shore defence batteries during both of them due to being sea sick on a boating pond. I served 17 years in REME and saw service in Northern Ireland and Bosnia. I also saw a lot of other places but nothing was going on at the time
  9. Jock - Hope you're feeling better by the morning. Just back from an excellent social evening where several pints of Doombar were consumed and caught up with people that I haven't seen for far too many years. Night all and sorry for any bad spelling
  10. I've got my van insurance with them. Certainly cheaper and so far (touch wood) I've not had any problems
  11. This should be a time to remember and thanks all of those who served in any capacity not only during the two World Wars but in all wars and conflicts since. I include civilians in this as many thousands endured hardship and danger without recognition. My only concern, and this has been born out of speaking to some youngsters, is that if the 2 World Wars and their anniversaries are not explained properly, they get confused. This is especially true with the start of WW1 last year and VE Day, VJ Day later on in the year being so close together.
  12. It seems that the anniversary of VE Day has been somewhat overshadowed by the election unfortunately. 13. Morning all. Late on parade this morning after one of those nights (not election related). Fortunately nothing booked for today. Mick - I hope NB Junior recovers quickly. Ice cream as a medicine works really well (I know from experience) AndrewC - I have to agree with you about Trev and Tex A relaxing day before going out for a few drinks tonight with a friend that I haven't seen for nearly 10 years. Means I might be late tomorrow Have a good day everyone
  14. Morning all. Looks like another of those days. Had a call too early this morning postponing my scheduled work for the day until next week. The excuse was extremely lame. OD - I hope Sherry has an uneventful day getting home. Please keep us updated. Dick - I certainly don't envy you. I just hope that you can grab a power nap or three John - Enjoy your trip Jamie - Some cracking photos. I'm not sure of the last time I saw Dolphins that close in shore Have a good day everyone
  15. Just had a quick catch up and thought that I'd make a couple of observations. Ferries - When travelling between Larne and Stranraer, I always prefered the really rough crossing as it meant that there weren't many people in the restaurant. Although, I could never understand why. Toast - Nearly black but still warm to allow the butter to penetrate.
  16. Morning all. A very wet and windy night is the south west. Now it's just very windy. Heading back home a bit later and hopefully I'll get a chance to look in before I leave. Have a good day everyone
  17. I've just spent the last couple of days with peace and quiet teaching myself how to solder brass properly and neatly. Nothing interesting to show as I've been using bits of scrap. A quick trip to my favourite Axminster shop today before heading back tomorrow.
  18. Personally, I was hoping that the Royal sprogging and the election happened on the same day to see which one got more news coverage. Unfortunately this isn't going to happen.
  19. Morning all from a very windy west country, but at least it's dry for the moment. Lost the internet connection mid afternoon yesterday so it's been a bit of a marathon catch up session this morning. Railsquid - Great to hear that Leo is developing fast. Flavio - Although I certainly don't know your industry, I found that breaking down the services that I could offer into a list very helpful. As AndrewC has said, it makes promoting and selling the company services a lot easier. Hope this helps. Jock - Hope you get over the latest set back quickly. Your attitude to life certainly helps me get through less troublesome days than you have. Dom - Hope you get rid of the throat infection and start to feel better soon. Gordon - Although I don't eat out that often, I'm not a fan of the majority of eateries. Like you I prefer decent, fresh cooked food that's more than a couple of mouthfuls per course. Tony_S - I hope that Matthew gets the problems with his placement ironed out. Have a good day everybody
