  1. That Lord President is named after the position of Lord President of the Court of Session, the head of the judiciary in Scotland.
  2. It's worth noting that the position of Lord President was one of those "useless non-jobs" (described as such by Bernard Donoughue, one of the inside sources for Yes Minister) where a Prime Minister would push a political rival as revenge and/or to keep them out of the spotlight. That worked out well...
  3. The Sword of Offering weighs 5 1/4 lb (2.4 kg) and has to be carried unsheathed for most of the ceremony.
  4. The USA is a bad example of electronic voting because of the proprietary voting machines. There are many other examples around the world where it DOES work, generally where they use off the shelf hardware and open source software which is open to scrutiny. I personally voted electronically in Australian Capital Territory elections 4 times when I lived there. Estonia is another good example of where it works well.
  5. The Great Train Race from Steamfest.
  6. Ukraine has Challenger 2s and Abrams now, plus Leopard 2s. Ask Iraq how that worked out. This is like the UK pulling Centurions out of storage and sending them into action. But even the 105mm L7 gun from 1958 (used on the Centurion Mk 5, M-60 and Leopard 1) was specifically designed to take out a T-54/55.
  7. Fire destroys workshop at Tasmania's Don River heritage railway https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-04-04/fire-workshop-tasmania-don-river-heritage-railway/102183238
  8. 230002 at the Rockhill Trolley Museum, being tested for Pop Up Metro. 230011 is there too but not visible.
  9. I remember when a protestor fired what turned out to be a starting pistol near the then Prince of Wales during a visit to Australia in the early 90s. The then Premier of New South Wales, a former rugby league player, had crash tackled the protestor to the ground before the royal protection officer could react.
  10. Norway gifts 12 diesel trains to Ukraine https://euromaidanpress.com/2023/03/30/norway-gifts-12-diesel-train-sets-to-ukraine-transport-minister-nygard/ Type 92 built by Duewag in the 1980s and retired in 2019.
  11. Why? He has lost literally every civil case he has ever brought against anyone, ending up paying costs.
  12. The British Rail Sandwich is supposed to be "kept under glass domes on the counters in refreshment rooms until the corners turned up".
  13. Any excuse to post a Tom Scott video.
  14. The World Lumberjack Championship has just finished. It was won by tree fellers from Ireland. (Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh)
  15. A driver training run of the AC16 from Warwick to Clifton.
  16. The transfer of the AC16 to Warwick on Monday. It ended up being piloted by diesel on both legs due to the fire danger.
  17. 16,000hp with a little container train.
