  1. one of which shows the rear of the train, with a ladder sticking out of the brake van veranda! https://www.flickr.com/photos/jerry-spillett/50929917971/in/photostream/
  2. A whistling in the distance as it coasted round the corner and then it opened up as it came through Rotherham earlier today, working from Butterley Midland Railway Centre to the East Lancs. D345 towing 40012, a steam escort coach and another badly graffitied coach.
  3. I may have mentioned it before, but we occasionally caught the Tilbury ferry from Gravesend as a "Sunday outing" around that period, and I remember there being makeshift market stalls in Tilbury Riverside selling jeans and transistor radios to the Russians (seamen?) who came ashore.
  4. You've really caught that "summer vegetation gone mad" look.
  5. That book I quoted from had the feel of being well researched, but it could still be wrong. I’ve no way of checking though.
  6. Maybe they don't want to tie up the dredgers with a longer run at sea, and don't have loading facilities for transhipment to another ship (i.e. only ship unloading facilities) at Angerstein? Only a theory.
  7. There's a couple of paragraphs about Smeed Dean at Sittingbourne in "The Cement Railways of Kent", Stoyel & Kidner, Oakwood Press no.70. But no mention of a ground frame. A few pics of locos, but not much else in shot. Edit: one more snippet in Appendix 5 of that book: Name of siding - Murston PCM Position - Sittingbourne Method of working - Ground frame: Sykes' key from Sittingbourne Box
  8. But in the “shallows” of the SED, they turned up for a while (occasionally) on the Westbury/Allington (near Maidstone) stone trains in place of the regular Eastleigh 33/0s.
  9. Swan hoping for snacks from the cafe by the canal basin in Rotherham today, with gratuitous passing container train to Tinsley.
  10. Close enough! Schlepptriebwagen with two P's, schleppen = to haul or drag.
  11. Trojan is the name, available for re-covering your sofa at https://www.shedno2.co.uk/products/british-rail-trojan-moquette-fabric-sold-by-the-meter !
  12. Nice advert for high-vis clothing - it took me a while to notice the chap in the flat cap and overcoat!
  13. The 73 is carrying a number '5' on a disc - they used those numbers on the Gatwick Express sets for a short while after introduction - was it a set number/ daily working diagram number I think? And the deep comfortable seats were needed because the ride on much of the SE Division was a bit bumpy! The EPBs that I regularly caught from Medway to London had a distinctive wear patch on the upright bit of the seat moquette, where people's backs had rubbed up and down with all the bouncing.
  14. Interesting - it came from Doncaster depot via Scunthorpe and it's heading back to Lincoln via Market Rasen, as shown on realtimetrains here https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:K03054/2023-06-26/detailed https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:K03055/2023-06-26/detailed then it's coming back to Cleethorpes https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:K03056/2023-06-26/detailed and back to Doncaster this afternoon https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:K03057/2023-06-26/detailed
  15. Not a very old ghost, but probably older than the many maroon signs around the station. Settle, earlier this month, some BR-era Rail Alphabet signage still going strong on the station approach:
  16. Didn’t know that, but it’s quite near the hamlet of Lower Bush.
  17. For anyone wondering, it's the less-familiar Cobham in Kent, between Sole Street and Rochester.
  18. Yes, just round the big curve after Rochester Bridge, through Strood town centre, and on with max power up the 1:100 towards Sole Street. With electrics, you got the classic ‘chink’ sound from the conductor rail as they took power. With a 33 on freight, a nice chattering exhaust sound. edit: google maps link here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/VMAKLh4eUXoUSMbr9?g_st=ic Used to be OK for photos but the footbridge is now a caged one, making it much more difficult, and the vegetation was much higher too the last time I was there.
  19. No idea sorry. Don’t recall those at all!
