Its quite simple. The loco crew empty the fire at the end of the shift and shovel the hot ash over the loco to keep it warm.
Looks more like a hard doneby Tiger tank than a loco

7mm !! I dread to think !!! these have cost enough in 4mm

Can someone do a picture of an A1 and A2 side by side - I'm struggling to see the difference.
Different wheel size is a major difference etc
-
TMC have a couple of name conversions on ebay sadly neither listing has a picture of the cab/tender area .
I have just looked at the excellent conversions photos above. The rear cartazzi truck is derailed which may explain the drunken cab area !!
-
Havent seen the BR version are we refering to the Black or Green version ? If its Green the LNER Yellow sheet has the bufferbeam nos . Remove the number(s) with T cut and a wood cocktail stick leaves a perfect finish for a new decal

Had another look at the Modelzone example it appears to be a prominent seam moulding that is proud of the boiler , very strange and very hard to get rid off

Progress with the theSilver Jubilee Triplet Set
Underframes and interiors are finished other glazing the partions. Blue is 1st class Green 3rd Class
Sides and ends ready for cleaning . The solder is very thin coating and should clean up easily with a Glass fibre Brush. Ist at the top, then Kitchen Car lastly is the 3rd car
Other projects done this month
Another Townstreet Signal Box for Helensdale. This replaces a very old Ratio Signal Box shown in previous pictures
I have detailed another J72 to go with 2313 (which has split its drive axle in picture new parts are awaited from Bachmann , a bit expensive £2 for the set ! !)

I have seen one in the "flesh" today in Modelzone Lakeside. Looks very nice , the lining is much finer including the wheel bosses . The bufferbeam lettering is also much smaller . The handrails are Black which I dont think is correct ??? Also there was the new version of Tornado and the L1 both also excellent .

On the whole looks very nice in the TMC pictures.
However some very minor details are wrong AH Peppercorn in LNER Livery should have, as in the photographs I have :-
Black Buffer housings
RA9 on cab ? this is BR surely? . EDIT . Just found another picture and RA9 is correct well done Bachmann
Shed allocation on bufferbeam should be a the bottom of Bufferbeam as per LNER practise , it also appears very large too as does A2 thereon too ?
Lining is still not upto Hornby A1/A3 standards especially the cartwheel size lining on the wheel bosses
Handrails in pictures appear to be Black , they appear to be Green in my photos?
BUT I am not complaining all these "defects" are easily sorted :D
I have a DJH 525 already a 526 Sugar Palm will look good

RCTS Volume has a picture of 9002 in LNER Livery with red buffers ,as were 9001 and 9003 all in Yellow Gills Sans livery. 9000 had shaded livery.
-
Yep
I can supply numbers if you need them :lol::lol:
-
Maybe I'm being a little churlish, but IIRC the Thompson L1 never carried the number 9001 did it? Has this been pointed out to Hornby?
Yes it did along with others
-
Hornby L1 cheapest on ebay brand new inc postage is £78.50 plus others within a couple of pounds more of that price
2 hours to go at £76 secondhand although says new etc
I think i would go for the new one personally

"Hi the date is 1/6/06, no not kept in a fridge as they would get moist. They have been kept in a larder in an air tight container, which stores our fresh produce. Thanks"
So I can't even eat my £10.00 each Smarties
totally bonkers what a load of @@@**&&

Hoppers finished. I have never found a photo of the Steel hoppers in LNER service other then ex works pictures. As they would have been a maximum of 11 years old before BR I have only added light weathering to them.
Dave Bradwell new underframe version
Others which the Bradwell etch provide some minor details.

That's beautiful Mick. What a wonderful job you've done all round, but especially in the cab department!
Bradwell cab components, you say?
Dave.
Yes Bradwell and a few modified bits including what started out as a GWR Screw reverser

Hi Mick,
Superb cab detail. You could be up for work at Hornby or Bachmann yet!
Regarding the kitchen roof detail, I came across a photo somewhere on the web with the Silver jubilee kitchen car detail in model form clearly visible, but do you think I can find it now. It looked correct, lining up with drawings, etc. When I find it I will let you know.
Mark
Thanks re roof and cab detail comment. Hopefully you can find the picture. I hope to make a start on the triplet in a month or so

That D20 cab is superb? Who's handrail knobs do you use for your lner locos, and what size?
Most are Gibson. On this loco I have used all sizes available depending on location on body
cheers

D20 nothing fixed down. I have now fixed the roof down and added a last coat of paint prior to lining and numbers/letters
Cab detail done. I have made use of Dave Bradwell castings, various pieces of fuse wire etc. I managed to find a couple of pictures to assist in the detailing.
Dave Bradwell LNER 21Ton Hopper etch done awaits buffers and some Archer rivets either side of the axleboxes. Very fiddly I am glad I use NER wooden hoppers on my layout and only have a few Steel hoppers:D
A couple of original Hopper Wagons either side of the Bradwell chassis, with the add on etches supplied added to the original chassis.

D20 with light coat of primer
Replacement Alexander 3940 tender with added detail including 52F lamp irons , I am awaiting a further brake standard as this is the water pick up version.
I have also built a 52F models compensated chassis for it. A bit fiddly and the instructions could have been clearer but got there in the end !!
More 52F their lamp irons fitted and new handrails to a Ebay bought Bachmann J72 which also been relettered and numbered using HMRS Pressfix , as originals where wrong colour and damaged
Lastly I have started on upgrading these with the Bradwell etch handrails removed so far. You get one wagon underframe which can be made as the correct LNER Version. Enough for another three but it doesnt include the prominent brake handles which is a shame.

Has anyone checked the tender heights on the A1/A2 as both loco cabs are lower than the tender ?
In the MR review the photos make the difference in step heights even more noticeable. MR does even mention the difference in heights or the pronouced seam along the boiler sides. I does say that two types of boilers are being made but why the seam?
Perhaps its not the locos at fault but the tender ?
