With a sunny day an opportunity to revisit some weathering conducted  by myself for me (makes a change!)

First up the Stanier Mogul.. I think it is now fully weathered. I must find a glue which sticks Bachmann cab doors on permanently. Any suggestions?

Next up another Bachmann product .. Royal Tank Corps ( renumbered then renamed and weathered

and a Model Loco Black 5. First one 45219.. needed finishing for ages..

Now I need to replace the "1" on the cab sides.. cameras see all!

    and finally,

another Model Loco Black 5 45285

and I had a cracking colour photo of the footplate on a Black 5 so..

Not managed many photos of weathering I have done recently .. Duchesses and Princesses have been weathered as well as more wagons and locos...

But today with the temperature at a reasonable level I took some recent weathering work outside to get some photos.  One item is for my own use the other two are fr use on Wentworth Junction..

Starting with two Hornby English Electric 350hp shunters. Mine is the Western Region one.

There are some nice colour photographs of these locos now available.  These are based on a pair of the real locos at rest at Manvers Main Colliery

And just to prove I have weathered both sides

Next up a Brush Type 2 A1A A1A (Airfix modified by Mike Edge)

Mixed traffic locos are a must for Leeds (London Road). I have plenty of kit built Black 5s (plus a Hornby one not shown on here).

Ks Black 5 with a Mainline tender and Comet front bogie - a Namer! Lancashire

A Model Loco Black 5 with Portescap motor and gears fitted

Another Ks Loco Black 5  - it needs to have the gears cleaned out as it is getting to be quite noisy. It is probably 45 years old and was built by Nicktoix

Caprotti 5 from a Comet Kit. Very different to the other Black 5s used on Herculaneum Dock and Chapel as well.

Built by my late father- a Ks Black 5 Has clocked up a lot of miles over the years!
    Enjoy!

    Layout locos
The layout will require a lot of passenger locos.. from both  the LM and the NE Regions in about 1960.

Looking at Jubilees.. kit built ones include:

Leewrad Islands.. now weathered an loaned for use on Shap.

Sea Horse also used on Chapel en le Frith
Bothe of these are Ks Kits with some modification

This is a weathered/shed cleaned Bachmann jubilee Sturdee.

I have had a short weathering session today. Having repainted a Bachmann Stanier Mogul  (thanks to @Rowsley17D for selling me the loco) I have now weateherd it - well phase 1 has been done .. a bit more to do when I remember to fit the new Brass Front footsteps.. Doh!

    and some POWsides/Slaters Private owners

    Locomotives
I saw a Bachmann Stanier Mogul for sale on RMWeb. A swift offer and accptance meant it was shortly on its way to me. Thanks to @Rowsley17D for the quick arrival.

Only problem was..it was in LMS Lined Black. Great but I wanted a BR one. A quick strip down, a spray of Halfords undercoat then a spray of topcoat (Hicoat). New lining courtesy of fox/modelmasters (possibly easier to do the lining by hand but the use of boiler band transfers does speed the process) a new number - 42949 a Brunswick Number and..

still to do.. fit  DG couplings then weather it (and I need to ask Mike Edge if he can do a smokebox number plate for it... and.. voila.. a fish engine for Herculaneum Dock!

Been a while since i last posted. I have been busy with lots of things including commissions but I have managed to get some time for some weathering of my own stock (more commissions are imminent!)

I repainted a model loco Black 5 I had bought last year and gave it a wash over with ink/water mix.

Now, armed with a suitable colour photo I have returned to finish the job

and in a view from above

I wonder if they grey on the footplate of the original photograph is the ash spread on the footplate to give a bit of extra grip for the locomen when walking along it?

    Locomotives
Just about finished my Hornby/Judith Edge Kits Fowler 2-6-4T.

The Judith Edge Etches ft easily onto the Hornby Body. (I used evo stick to stick them to the sides.)  I added some of Dave Franks' "Bent" mushroom tank vents, some Wizzard lost wax cast buffers, Gibson pony and trailing bogie wheels. I painted it in black with Car paint. Lining used my Haff pen and humbrol paint, HMRS transfers were then added and finally a dose of weathering powder used to give it  a bit of "life"

It now needs a smokebox number plate and some DG couplings.

    Locomotives
Well some more items are slowly getting finished..

A while ago I acquired a DJH Duchess .. named as "City of Liverpool" the name didn't match the loco/tender combination.. (Duchesses and City locos and tenders are a mine field)

Eventually I bought some Fox nameplates for "City of Leicester"  a very camera shy loco.

This has been "shed cleaned" but I notice I have not finished - I need a bit of dirt on the top of the boiler cladding (where you can't reach it easily).  It has a high level gear box and a Mashima in it and it can pull almost everything it has been asked to.

I reworked a Judith Edge Ruston I built a few years ago. I was never happy with the BR Black livery so stripped the paint off it, refitted some items which were bent or askew then painted it as a "NCB  Barnbow East  Colliery  No 7" red. Thanks to Mike Edge it now has a nameplate - "Asenath" - my Mothers name.. bless her.

For its size it is quite heavy so it should be fine...

And again Mike did some nameplates so that I could  remember an Early Riser..

Purley Oaks.. aka Mal Stewart.. on a BRCW type 2

A number of locos have been laid aside for a while waiting new motors and gearboxes. Some have already been posted on here but I did  catch up a lot during lockdown.

This DJH WD had been built by someone else. The motor was out of mesh so.. a High Level Gearbox soldered to a cheap Chinese motor has been fitted  and a smidgeon of dirty weathering added.

This Wills 4F came without a motor or gears but did have a tender cab (used from Skipton as part of their "snowplow" duty locos. A misumi motor coupled to a High Level Gearbox fitted in easily.. not many more variations on a 4F to go!

A Model Loco Black 5 had a seized Portescap motor fitted. I stripped the gearbox down to component parts.. cleaned some very old very stiff lubrication out .. then had to free each axle as some where down the line this had been near a jar of Plumbers Mate or similar flux.. It took about 8 hours before i got it working then a coat of Halfords Satin Black, some hand lining by me and numbering.. then filthed with ink and weathering powders..

next up.. a few more locos...

Haven't really managed to keep to date with the Blog.. too busy actually doing some weathering. One thing about using the inks is .. no airbrush! No cleaning up of airbrush..no ventilated spray booth but I do wear a good face mask using the powders!

    I recently refinished a Hornby A4..

It had arrived from a customer to be sold on.. after a bit of rework on the chassis , new plates and a dose of weathering.

weathered A4s are nice.. the colour photos  (Keith Pirt took some lovely colour shots of A4s) of such machines show certain areas where dirt accumulates.. greasy, wet soot from the chimney leaves a large mark on the top of the cladding behind the chimney. Sadly it shows how overscale the cladding joints are..

Incorrect tender and shouldn't have plates on teh can side.. but hey ho.. now sold on..

and something different.. Bachmann TTAs.. these have varied fuel spillage patterns in teh real photos I have seen..

These ones have dirtier chassis detail than the gentler oil spillage from the tank filler...

    More soon

Mike Edge has been busy producing a "Super 40" for use on Carlisle. It is very, very heavy and has the "Co" bits on both bogies driven. My task..fit sound and "gentle" weathering

Sound.. Easy peasy as there is enough room to ge a Legomanbiffo Loksound V5 in and a speaker as well with no hacking or bodging to get it to fit!

Then a picture of a close sister engine (D335..this one is D334) in "Diesels on the London Midland"by Michael Welch gave a good starting point

    and side on..

Now back to Mike to refit some windows...

Bachmann renamed Patriot Royal Tank Corps - through mud and blood to the green fields beyond

A 4F with high sided tender - need to go and replace one of the 4s

Long time since I posted in my Blog. Been away and then ...

Positive thing about the Lockdown is more time to finish items in the "Roundtuit" pile.

I had a number of locos acquired without motors and gearboxes. I had some motors and gearboxes so...

take a High Level gearbox and a Mitsui motor,

add to an existing Wills 4F and

a 4F with tender cab.. do it again and

    A 4F with a high sided tender

I had a couple of Model Loco Kits Black 5s with totally bunged up Portescaps. Afte a lot of hard work, cleaning, taking gearboxes apart, checking motor connections I have (temporarily at least) coaxed them back to life. Repainted into BR lined Black (still boiler bands to do on this  loco)

and a kit built Jinty.. bought from EBay.. not put together quite right but now fixed..

Now it is a Brunswick loco for use on HerculaneumDock

Been busy detailing, renumbering/renaming a few locomotives.

    Two Duchesses..
City of London.. rename, renumber, fit details weather
The photo for this one shows where they painted over the "LMS" on the tender.

    and the boiler top

    Next up Duchess of Buccleuch

again rename, renumber etc. Very light weathering applied

Then one of the "Saltley Ladies" 44919. New numbers, details added an a new smokebox plate.

    and, finally a Rebuilt Patriot

    Prestatyn

Having returned the Black Duchess I received tow more locos from the same client. Both needed to be renumbered (and renamed for the Duchess), detail packs fitting then weathered.

    Black 5

One of two Saltley favourites. Not too dirty.

Boiler cladding dirt - its that coal dust/soot oil mix...sets like rock in real life.

New smokebox plate. I had to make this up using some Pacific Coat Models plates. New shedplate fitted.

Been away for a while. Got back to a few items to be wetahered etc.

First up. A Hornby LMS lined Black Duchess. Renamed, renumbered (becoming a BRITISH RAILWAYS lettered loco), Hornby add ons added and then weathered..only a light weathering.

    And a Hornby Coke Wagon

    and a set o 3 PO wagons

I spent the Warley show helping people to have a go at weathering. They had a great time and managed to weather some of my stock to their satisfaction.I now need to finish these off but here are some examples of items weathered at the show

A couple of minerals with a bit of grime and rust

Then three with just the ink/water mix added

And a couple of Coke wagons

    A Palvan Shock

and finally , for the moment , the final photo a pair of Chivers plate wagons

Big problem is a lack of light at the moment.

Thanks for all who had a go!

In between operating stints on the Leeds Club layout (Chapel en le Frith (Central) at the weekend I was asked to "tone" down a Black 5.

This is a Korean Brass specimen, with a new Comet chassis and painted in BR lined Black by Innocentman. A quick trawl through some nice colour photographs revealed a shot of this locomotive, gently travel stained, so..

delivered straight back to is very happy owner!

Just sent this off to be collected by its owner.
An EM (regauged)  Bachmann Ivatt 4MT Mogul (aka a Mucky Duck or Chinese Cracker). Renumbered and shed/smokebox door plate  ( supplied by client) added. Pick ups fitted to the tender then a client supplied Zimo sound chip, stay alive and speaker were fitted into the loco at the smokebox end (I don't like steam chuffs coming from a tender). New front steps (comet) supplied by client added.

A nice colour photograph from one of the Railways around Bradford was used and..

    Side on

    Three quarter front

    And the other side

and , finally, three quarter rear shot..

A gentle waft of road dirt on the frames and wheels then a bit of "Grease" added to the tender axleboxes.

A few diesels. The owner had fitted DCC chips to them. I have reset some of the CVs on these to sort out acceleration/Deceleration and then a waft of weathering after adding the details at one end on these.
    First up a Vitrains 37

and a bit of front end detail

    Hornby Class 50

    Heljan Class 58

    and the dreaded door stickers!

    Bachmann/Kernow Sir Daniel Gooch

    and a close up

and finally a Class 108 lightly weathered

Tow BR Standards for a customer. Both have had Zimo 645Rs sound chips fitted with stay alive units fitted into the tender, Both have a sugar cube speaker fitted under the chimney. Whilst I fitted the sound units someone else EM gauged the locomotives. Then I weathered them using Black and White photographs supplied by the customer to meet his weathering needs.

    First up.. a Black Hornby 4MT 4-6-0
a bit of fairly dilute white poster paint to highlight some dribbling on the cylinders

and around the bottom edge of the smokebox door

    Then the Standard 5MT

The photos supplied showed the locos were not filthy but did have road dirt and water stains on them

Been busy with other things but just finished a filthy Black 5.  Basically a Hornby model with a new chassis, I fitted sound (the speaker is a sugarcube between the frames under the chimney as it is EM.) I then lined it to weather it to match a black and white photograph which shows about 8 inches of lining on the cab side!  Lots of ink then lost of powder. Number and lining cleaned using a cotton wool bud and water.

    And another EM Black 5.

Comet tender, sugar cube speaker under chimney (a Comet double chimney)

    Enjoy!

required for Chapel-en-le-Frith (Central) at the end of this month.

and something different. Mike Edge has built, painted and lined one of Judith Edge Consett A tank locomotives..in S4. Now named Dante an requiring a gentle wash..
