Been a while since an update but...

I have a few BR Standards. The Bachmann one

replaced an Airfix on which had a new chassis and running gear fitted. This one can pull most things but does anyone have a way of filling in the screw hole in the connecting rods other than modelling putty?

And another Bachmann loco - an ex LMS 2MT Mogul..

I have recently been busy with Murgatroyd tankers - but have had the opportunity to weather an EM Gauge Duchess. This is in one of the two types of BR Lined Maroon - and, as it happens, the owner is not over keen on that livery so..

    a clean loco

and, after and application of inks and powders

    and for some close ups...

running gear (powder applied while ink is wet)

and some dirt build up around the lower edges of the firebox/footplate "joint"

and some bits of the tender - water filler area first

and a side on of the tender itself - not the build up of dirt along the tender top and also at the joint between the underframe and the tender body..

    enjoy!

A long time ago I pined for some Murgatroyd's Tankers from Triang - and never have I managed to get mits on any .. until recently when 7 of them fell through the door for weathering so..
First up a clean one - isn't it white(!)

    and now a dirty version

    Hope these are OK

Step forward some ex Dorset Kits On3 East Broad Top coal hoppers

    - first up a "clean" view,:

and now - after applying some watered down black ink and adding black powder once the ink i sdried

The ends are interesting as getting in to weather them (despite being lot bigger than my HO ones) is not easy..

and a close up of part of the doors and sides

and a quick look inside the hopper

no good colour photos for the internals so I hope they look like UK hopper wagon internals...so if anyone has any please can I see them??

Finishing 2013 with some milk tankers - a batch of six ex Dapol ones and one ex Lima one. I have added new couplings and rewheeled the Lima one.

First up two of the Dapol ones...

and a Dapol and the Lima one.

Although they have similar origins they are very different.

A couple of close ups - first the IMS tank side

and the running gear of a United Dairies tanker..

Considering they are used for milk traffic I can't find many "clean" photos of these vehicles - I suppose this is down to the mileages they ran
    hope these are Ok?

    O gauge Western in process.

At one time Leeds MRS set off to build a model of Hartford Junction on the WCML (for various reasons it was never finished) . As part of this I started to gather together some AC Electrics - all painted Electric Blue.

First up a Hornby bodyshelled AL1 (or 81)

New pantograph, modified bogies and added numbers/crests

    and a Hornby AL6 (class 86)

repainted , new pantograph, modified bogies and Jackson Evans crests and numerals.

I also have a AL5 (Bachmann) but no layout to run it on.

Just to show that I don't always weather my stock..

a Dapol prototype deltic on a modified set of Lima bogies - I know have replacement wheelsets to get it to run on code 75 rail... just need to fit them..

I have dug out some more locos... this time some Industrials. I apologise for the state they are in they have been in a box for a while and have been moved from place to place in the loft. Now I have my own railway room they should see an update and be joined by some new build locos...

First up No1 Puddleglum a Centre Models Avonside with a Ks HP2m motor and Sharman wheels..

And don't comment on the name - as chosen by her indoors....

then No 2 - Percy again a Centre Models Kit - this time of a Hunslet. Again with Sharman wheels and soon (hopefully to be joined by two Judith Edge Hunslets(!))

Number 3 Wee Fergie - a Centre Models Kerr Stuart Victory - aka super power as it weighs a ton and has lots of adhesion

and last ( for the time being) but not least Number 4 Odin - again a Centre Models kit for a Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn loco. Chassis courtesy of Mike Edge ( its compensated too!)

First two use Halford British Racing Green, Number 3 is Halford matt black and No4 is our old Metro colour - amazing what car spray paint can do!!

One of my colleagues bought a new Farish N Gauge 5MT at Warley Show for use on Headingley. I was asked to give it a wash over to get rid of the plastic sheen ..

an ink/water wash followed by a small amount of weathering powder and ..

Then Dave who was demonstrating next door to me asked me to give an O Gauge Parkside GW loco coal wagon a bit of a weather - complete with rust..

and the other side.. again using ink/water wash plus some rust powder and coal dust powder..

Finally found the GSWR Baltic Tank - its rough and ready but does give you an idea of how well proportioned these locos were. Built by my father in plasticard on a Triang chassis

  11. Barry O
As Weaselfish identified my father built all sorts of oddities

So next up a Caledonian 0-8-0 Tank. Plasticard with a scratchbuilt brass chassis and an X04 type motor, Ks wheels.

    Painted and lined by me...

    some more oddballs coming up..

And just a sample of the BR Standards - strangely enough I have built these..

First up a Standard 2-6-4T - DJH kit built painted and lined by myself.

Of course Bachmann then brought one of these out and it has a lot of pipework not in the DJH kit

Next up a Standard 5MT - again a DJH kit built painted and lined by myself.

and of course just when I finished it along came an RTR version

and finally, for now, a DJH Brit...

    - and again.. a new RTR one available....

but nil desperandum - I have more kits still to build...

I have been contemplating a blog of sorts to keep up with weathering I do for both myself and a number of clients across Europe. The latest item to be weathered is a Heljan ) gauge Hymek - as it comes its a nice shiny BR Blue and it is very, very heavy (3.5kg) which makes handling a trifle difficult!

Using Indian ink and water as a "undercoat" I washed all over the loco including underframes. (Black ink for the roof and sides, brown for the underframes and bogies) When dry I added a variety of weathering powders (mainly black).

To add a texture to the roof around the exhaust ports and lifting eyes I added powder to wet ink (tapping the powder onto the ink from a nice soft makeup brush)

Next up will be 3 Duchesses, an A2, an A1 and a Jubilee - all EM which will be done this week once gardening is complete.

I have been weathering a J25 scratch built many, many years ago by Mike Edge. The "real" loco was loaned to the Derwent Valley Railway (DVR) in Yorkshire - this one is owned by someone who has a model of part of the DVR and is pictured in the new book on the DVR.

It has been washed over with a mix of black ink and water followed by a dusting of black weathering powder for the body of the loco and tender and a brown/black mix around the lower part of the chassis and wheels.

Detailing was then added using black powder added to wet ink on the loco

and as shown in close up

    .

Along the bottom of the tender tank a similar approach has been used - and a bit of "rust" added around the tender tank filler

Ant questions - feel free to ask

Sometimes my father built a loco because he liked it - hence an ex LSWR D15.

quite why he built it I don't know - it is fitted with a motor and runs but I don't imagine building a Southern Region layout for it to run on - so its back into storage for this one...

Some of the ex LNWR stock in my stock box

first up a Beames 0-8-4T - scratchbuilt by Dad

its a bit "tall" but does work..

    next up a Gem G2

D13 motor and quite powerful but requires a new chassis as the original one has worn out.

and as a comparison the Bachmann version

So I have been busy with decorating but found time to weather this 8F for a client.

It is a DJH kit in EM

Stanier tenders accumulated grot along the top edge (where the grease etc from the chimney and the coal from being coaled met..

The locomotive running gear (rods etc did pick up some nasty dirt on top of their grease and oil..

I hope this gives a good impression of what it looked like

finally got enough time away from the builders to get some shots of Presflo weathering shots

    First up ingredients:

some white poster paint ( my ink ran out!) a bit of water with a little tiny bit of washing up liquid in it, brushes, make up sponge etc and some weathering powder.

    a brand new Bachmann Presflo..

I used a flat brush to put some mixed water/ink/soap on the top of the wagon then used my normal sponge technique to drag it down the sides ( and washed all over ends, chassis etc

Then drag and add powder while wet. Note the cement powders are quite lumpy - I have some finer but whiter powders so will go over with these later..

    and hey Presflo...

    hope this helps

    A few heavy freights locos

First up a DJH Stanier 8F.. interestingly enough I built this as a demonstration at a Hull MRS Exhibition many years ago. It went together well..

and another DJH kit - this time a 9F. This again went together well and has been used on a number of layouts

and finally something different a loco built be my father...

a Ks 72XX - it has Ks wheels and a D13 motor. Originally built for use on Cwmafon but I gave it to my brother in law when father died. When BiL died my sister gave it back

just need an invite for Mr Edge to take Cwmafon to a show and it will re-appear..

So Beauty and the Beast - first up beauty..

Cotswold compound - built by Nicktoix a long tine ago and repainted into BR Black by me - I find the compounds fascinating and really beautiful. This is a Sutherland Kit with the cylinders attached to the footplate so it has removable connecting rods..

and then the beast - a Ks garratt.. built by my father and painted by me - long due a strip down and rebuild but this time with two motors. Could have found its way to Chapel en le frith so an opportunity to run it on the new club layout...

As some of you may have observed I have steam locos (and stock ) from the ex LMS, Ex BR Standards, and ex LNER..

This is due to the fact that my late father and I had slightly different views of the railway world (strangely enough he was very biased towards the LMS despite living in the North East. Despite this he did build a lot of ex LNER engines for me to paint and line...

    as in

an ABS L1 - it weighs a ton, uses Romford wheels and a D13 motor and gearbox - and seems to have more grunt than the Hornby offering.

Nest up - one from me a Little Engines A7 - and I will be the first to admit it doesn't really like corners...

It also has a D13 and Romford wheels.

and two further ex NER tanks engines

first up a Nucast G5. Romford wheels, MW005 motor and it weighs a ton without any ballast. Strange that they are building a 12" to the foot one of these...

and finally for now - one of Newcastle's J72s - in lined Apple Green complete with NER crests...

a Ks kit, with Ks wheels and a Ks motor - and it does work.....

With Nu-Cast originating in my home village it would seem sensible ( at the time) to build some of their offerings.

    First up a Q6.

my second kit built loco - MW005 motor, Ks wheels and still going strong... just ready for a rebuild and repaint/weather.

The next is a V2 built by my father and painted/lined by me.

This has been used on Herculaneum Dock but really needs a replacement chassis in place of the big lump of white metal it has now

Why Durham School? Well, I played rugby against Durham School every year for 7 years and walked under the nameplate every time we played there!

And finally for now - something of an oddity - but not for much longer a Ks P2. Still got a HP2M motor and Ks wheels.

    enjoy!
  24. Barry O
For some reason I have ended up with two directors' saloons and their locos - neither of which I can really make use of!

First Up an M&L LNWR Cornwall and Saloon.

hand lined (I must be mad!!) I built the saloon, my late father the loco - and this has visited many, many layouts over the years.

And now a NER Class A - scratchbuilt by father, painted by me..

and then a D &S Inspection Saloon painted and lined by me with some Steve Barnfield transfers..

last seen on Gresley Beat at Preston Show..

    enjoy!!
