and for some more of my fathers plasticard locos - three ex L&Y locomotives.

First up a highflyer - this uses original Sharman wheels

and next up. An ex L& Y 0-8-0

this has a Ks' HP2M motor and K's wheels

and finally for now a 2-4-2T - which is showing its age and some plastic warping

While doing a demo at Leeds Show over the weekend Mike Edge passed me a few locos to weather. The Sentinel six wheeler is a particular favourite of mine and Mike had a good selection of colour photos of a number of these locos showing where they get dirty and rusty. First up a side on shot

The detail along the lower edge of the side sheets makes use of weathering powder added to wet ink.

this three quarters front view shows the build up of grease and muck on the buffer heads - again this is powder applied to wet ink/water on the buffers.

    Hope these are OK

For some reason I have ended up with a few ex LMS engines

    first up

next up a Model Loco Black 5 with a Portescap motor bought second hand..

and as way of comparison a Hornby Black 5. Tim Easter started the mods to this at BRM Doncaster this year and I have just finished it

and as another comparison on of my Ks Black 5s - built by my father painted and lined by me

A few Pacifics... there are still some to be built...

First Up a Wills A2 built by my father..

I think it has an X04 motor....... time that was changed, and now a curiosity

A Jamieson Streamlined Duchess. Bought semi complete I added some detail, painted and lined it and recently added some new magnets to what is a rewheeled Hornby Dublo chassis

So having stock locked into all parts of the house while a loft conversion takes place I have found a few photos of "different" ex LMS passenger tank engines.

    First up

    A Jidenco ( well partly) Stanier 0-4-4T.

Built by my late father who had to do a bit of scrtach building to get it as right as he could. Romford wheels and X04 type motor.

and to follow up, a Craftsman Midland 0-4-4T built by Nicktoix - I changed the wheels as I can't get on with the older Sharman Wheels

Nicktoix modified the cab - originally this was lined out LMS red but now in BR Black.

    Hope you like these

For a change - some ex LMS shunters

First up a Craftsman Midland 1F - a very easy kit to build and this does work on Herculaneum Dock as a "spare" shunter for the yard.

and a rtr weatherd - a Bachmann 3F (Jinty) tank - a bit skittish but also seen as a spare on a variety of layouts

and finally, a Birkenhead Dock Tank - complete with rear end damage..

A Ks kit with Romford wheels and a Ks HP2M motor - yep we still have some of these which still work..

    Hope these are OK

Not very often this happens but the ink has been drying too quickly today to allow me to work it into the nooks and crannies it needs to be - so I have been readying some mineral wagons for weathering. I bought these over a number of years ready built and they are a mix of Airfix and Parkside kits. Once complete they can be used on Herculaneum Dock or Cwmafon.

Using Model master decals numbering 16T and 24.5T BR mineral wagons is so easy compared to days of yore. They will be weathered inside and out and will be rusty in parts.

Will update this when I can get the camera out as the shots I took have gone a bit squiffy... And an update.. 3 clean BR 16 T minerals - Airfic, Parkside and Parkside
    .

    and some Parkside 24.5t minerals

hopefully I will update tomorrow with these suitably weathered - intend to do this down at the Leeds Club meet tonight

Been busy today weathering some locos before umpiring a 90 over county junior game... The first is an EM Brassmaster LNWR G2 - a gentle wash of ink and odd bits of powder to get a slightly used look

    First a clean loco...

    and now slightly "used"

and then a funny one - take a dirty loco

then make it look like its been "cleaned"

this is very much a try it and see so does anyone have any comments on the finish??

attempt 2 to publish all the pictures went strange?!

So a bit of rework done to Earl Roberts and the B8...

first up Earl Roberts of Kandahar...

    and now the B8

and just for some fun some vans..

    Parkside BR(SR) CCT

and a Ratio Bogie Luggage van

    enjoy

I have, over the years weathered a number of vans.

This weeks work is to complete a Sulzer Type 2 (Class 24 - I have fitted a Legomanbiffo sound chip to), then the ex GC locos seen in earlier bits of the blog, and finally some added detail to some vans. I will post the original view here today then fill in photos of the vehicles when weathered.

    First up the Green 24

    and now with weathering...

    then the vans..

Just starting to re-work some of my weathered stock as well as finally photographing some weathered stock

First up a Millhome B5 built by late father

this will be reworked this week.

Next a Hornby Stanier 2-6-4T - about to be re-wheeled with Alan Gibson wheels

and finally a Chivers LNER Pigeon brake - somewhere I have a D&S one of these which needs weathering...

Over the years i have acquired and built a number of iron ore wagons. These range from modified Airfix 16T minerals, through Parkside fitted kits to Bachmann unfitted examples.

I am now starting to weather the fleet as it appears we can run them on Chapel en le Frith - a layout under construction by Leeds MRS.

The Bachmann vehicles are a bit "chunky" so a dollop of weathering does help. This time I used a mix of sepia ink and water followed by adding chunks of ore dirt/rust adding powder to wet ink then a dusting of dry powder. First off a shot of the wagons "part" weathered - ie no top coat of "ore" coloured powder.

I will add the final version later today. (lost the photo - oops!)

And remember - I can wash this off with a little water, CIF (or similar) and a toothbrush/rag.

and an "inside" wagon shot.. Please note new photo added due to colour inconsistency of the original shot

Just for once I had nothing but childhood memories of seeing these empties from a road over-bridge between West Hartlepool and Seaton Carew. The wagons were held in a long siding for the next shipment of ore in from either Hartlepool docks or tees side - I never saw a moving train as my visits didn't coincide with them!

I am part way through weathering some of my own tank wagons - an Airfix Class B and a Mainline 14t Class B

Here they are together before weathering:

unlike Mike Delamar I haven't changed the walkways or ladders on the Airfix kit and I forgot to paint over the restraining bars on the Mainline vehicle - I will come back to that in a later blog.

So a general wash of ink and water followed by powder - then running wet ink down from the filler and adding dry powder to this results in:

Class B Tank ( note how the old AIrfix decals show up on the side of the tank)

    and

    - notice the shiny metalwork - will go back now and sort that out...

    enjoy

One of the best things about using the ink and water technique for base coat weathering is I can do it most of the year. As mentioned in one of my earlier blogs I had a problem with it being too warm to get the ink to flow where I wanted it to. On reflection it wasn't the temperature it was the humidity ( or lack of it) No problems this week - just a bit dark to take photos.

I will try and get some shots of some coaches currently being weathered as well as a couple of diesels. For these I use a slightly different technique.

Black ink and water from the top down - brown ink and water from the bottom up.This gives a good representation of the colours seen on diesels and coaches. I still use powders on top of the dry ink - and for the odd rust patch use powder on wet ink to give a surface texture.

I will up date this when the sun comes out and can get some clearer photographs.

Just found an example of a diesel which I did a while ago - a Heljan Co-Bo re- gauged to EM by Mike Edge for use on the Condor... more soon
