  1. Has RMWeb had a wee wobble this evening....??

It seemed to "think" for a long time on a couple of actions and seemed to drop me out of one forum I was reading. Probably me though, it usually is.

  2. I know this is not a new gripe but...Car Insurance renewal is so infuriating. 20% up on last year, Apply as new customer and it's 20% less as is every other company. Discount for staying is only 5%. Every year we have to waste so much time applying to be "new" customers for different companies. Why?????

Best deal I was offered for "new" turns out to be Saga (who are also 2nd best on Which surveys) but using Saga makes me feel old and I'm only 71!

Carrying eggs over ploughed fields without scrambling them was the boast. But why would you do that?

I used to pass there on the bus as a kid on the way into Derby in the fifties and the name always held a macabre fascination.

  5. Just bought some 'Chaos Black' aerosol paint in a Games Workshop store. As predicted by others, I was - by some margin - the oldest nerd present.

    1. highpeakman

      highpeakman

I used to buy Chaos Black a few years ago in the small pots but I thought they had stopped doing it. So is it only available in spray cans or have they reintroduced it? It's a good black to use on locos.

Just sold a Athearn BC Rail Boxcar on UK Ebay last week. Maybe the market is better here?

  7. Arranging to replace a pair of expensive tyres that have worn quickly. Told by tyre supplier that a second set of tyres never lasts as long as the factory original set! Don't think I agree, what do others think?

    1. highpeakman

      highpeakman

These are premium brand run flats but I have not had this problem before with same brand. Arranging an alignment check.

Usually get around 20k but this set of rears lasted just 10k. Haven't done that since I was 20!

57xx - Agree. Just amazed at "expert" advice you get these days when trying to explain a possible problem.

There isn't much choice in less expensive. Both rear tyres wearing in middle which indicates over inflation but actually they are slightly under inflated. Last 5 cars were same type with same brand of tyre but never had this problem before. I'm 70 and don't drive like a teenager any more (much!).

  11. Given the work required to make a Heljan 14 usable on DCC, I consider this model not of merchantable quality.

    1. highpeakman

      highpeakman

Mine has never run smoothly either but, in my case, it's not a DCC issue. Seems to be a wheel contact/pick up problem. In spite of new wheelset and pick ups it's never been right.

  12. I didn't previously think it was either possible or reasonable to actually hate a model locomotive...

    1. highpeakman

      highpeakman

I think I have it's twin. New wheel sets, new contacts plus checked over again and again but never runs right.

  13. I am very annoyed with myself. The Bachmann Toad brake van, which I've invested a good 8 hours worth of modelling time in, hit the floor this afternoon during painting due to a f***ing wasp flying down my shirt front. I got stung in the process and have a smashed Toad. The wasp was killed!! Very cross.

    1. highpeakman

      highpeakman

You have my sympathy. I have found those "Blue Light" electric fly killer devices to be very effective on wasps. Might be worth installing one near the modelling area as they seem to go straight to it. Damn flies ignore it though!

  14. HMRC - VAT returns - What can you say? All sunbmissions done correctly weeks ago. Chasing gets answers like "maybe", "it should", "Yes, we know it's wrong but it should self correct", "Should sort itself out", "a glitch in the system", "We will do it urgently" still not done 4 weeks later.

    1. highpeakman

      highpeakman

This is a "Final" VAT settlement and they owe us money. The system keeps wanting more "final" returns even after The "Final Return" was input weeks ago. So now a Final with "0" in every column has had to be entered. We know we are not the only ones with this problem.

  15. Asked a shop if they stocked code 75. "No, it's rubbish". I disagree.

    1. highpeakman

      highpeakman

At least they knew what it is - At one model railway shop I was told what do you mean, code 75 track, We've only got PECO?

  16. Just seen the Lancaster going over to the 'Dam'. What a wonderful sound.

    1. highpeakman

      highpeakman

The Lancaster took a flight over Lincoln last week as I was about to go into Tesco. It flew overhead and then did several circuits of the City and I was amazed that only a couple of other people besides me stood to watch it, the rest carried on shopping as normal. Surely that sound alone gets your attention.

But the earth is flat - Well most of it is - in south Lincolnshire anyway.

  20. Just spent the best part of yesterday looking for a small pack of custom made name and number plates. Finally, of course, found them in one of the first places I had looked (and subsequently twice more) right next to the workbench. Just how do these, supposedly inanimate, things manage to hide so well?

    1. highpeakman

      highpeakman

I already have a vast accumulation of model railways bits - does that mean I am living in a wormhole then? Might explain a lot!:)

  23. Funny how many drivers use fog lights when the rest of us can see the moon shining brightly some 1/4 million miles away.

    1. highpeakman

      highpeakman

Worse are the ones who only turn on lights when it is pitch black. Apparently not necessary in fog and heavy rain?

In many modern cars being stationary with brakes on means the engine turns off. If you take your foot off the brakes then the engine starts again - using more fuel?

      highpeakman

No, the Bank machines credit your account with the full amount - but you may now have given them another idea to make more money!
