I always thought the difference between the 1958 and 1960 liveries was the style of lining. The earliest BR red liveries carried BR style lining, inset from the edge of the panel, whilst the later style was lining on the edge of the panel, following LMS practice. People who saw the engines held that it did make a difference to the perception of the colour.

Nothing to do with the Catholic way (or the Protestant way. Burning at the stake was the proscribed punishment for heretics, of any description. So Henty VIII had heretics burnt. Being hung, drawn annd quartered was the punishment for traitors. The Catholic priests executed in the reign of Elizabeth were regarded as traitors, as owing their allegiances to a foreign power (the Pope).

When I did this I soldered in the handrail knobs on the right hand side, ran the wire through them temporarily and used that to help line things up. Seemed to work.

Freightman? ABS? As far as I know, Parkside's 7mm LNER wagons have the wooden ends. The number/lettering style is almost certainly wrong for the vehicle.

Fix smokebox inner wrapper, smokebox front and smokebox outer wrapper in position. Fix completed assembly in place on the footplate. 140119_2.jpg I think that I can work out the outer wrapper - the one with the raised rivets. I presume one of the remaining two pre-formed pieces is the inner wrapper? Why is a third piece supplied and which of the two remaining pieces on the etch is the one to be used? I think you would use all 3 parts, as the smokebox has a noticeably larger diameter than the boiler. Frank

I've jus read Tony's piece in RM and also looked at some of the comments on Facebook. I found it odd that nobody on Facebook seemed to mention the 3 articles in RM that embodied the points Tony was trying to get across, two on wagon building and one on a 2mm scale DMU, involving such horrifically elitist ideas such as kit-building, kit-bashing. cross-kitting and scratch building. Seems you get pilloried for expressing an opinion but ignored if you put into practice. Frank

Power DVD for Lenovo. Can't help you with the codec, not least because I don't know what a codec is.

Played the DVD on my computer and it worked fine, bar a couple of the featured layouts not having sound.

The latest edition is out today and uniquely got a preview in today's Daily Telegraph. The reason for this is an interview with Jools Holland, which was extensively quoted and illustrated with pictures of what the Telegraph described as his 'train set'. Still, it provided a very positive take on the hobby. Those of us who were amazed by the Carlisle layout featured a while back will be glad to see another 5 page article, with more photographs from Tony Wright.

I was that soldier! 45698 is etched into my memory. We had family in Chester and when visiting went for a walk by the Roodee, when what should come past on the line out to North Wales was 45698 itself. I was not best pleased. How it got there I don't knoe, maybe running in from Crewe? Frank

I attended a school run by the Christian Brothers. Most of the staff were not inclined to leave you wondering if you had displeased them and their weapon of choice was the strap. Teachers who didn't use the strap were regarded as fair game and their lessons were often mercilessly disrupted. When I went into teaching I worked at an Inner London school that used corporal punishment before it was banned. My experience was that the absence of corporal punishment actually improved discipline as it led to much better relations between staff and pupils. Frank

I've just come across some colour photo albums from this imprint. Two of them focus on the Great Northern 'Queensbury' lines around Bradford and another on the ex Midland lines in Bradford. Packed with colour photographs from the 60s most of which I'd never seen before and with detailed and informative captions. Well worth a look. All the usual disclaimers apply. Frank

By BR days and certainly by BR Maroon days many of the coaches would have had bits of panelling replaced. Photos I've seen suggest it would be rare for any of them by the late 50s to still be fully panelled. I'm not sure how you could replicate this appearance. Frank

I agree with you about waiting eagerly for the Railway Modeller. One of the layouts featured (in the erly 70s) which really made an impression on me was Burdale. The most recent issue of the Modeller has a feature on Dentdale, made by one of the Burdale team. Very nostalgic! Frank

The D120 is (or was) part of the D& S range. Can't help with the NER 6 wheeler but CRT (?) do the Thompson six wheel brake.

Both now finished. Paint was Lifecolor BR Unfitted Grey and transfers were from Cambridge Custom Transfers. Frank

I missed out on the trams but that beautiful green and cream livery brought back many memories. Lime Street always seemed to be awash with buses, mostly Corpy green but a few cherry red Ribbles providing a bit of variety.
