  1. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Arthur Itis kept popping up all day today, Nurofen has sent him packing. When I was a union rep. I often visited Manchester where the union (GMB) had a training centre at Whalley Grange. The training centre was a former none-conformist seminary. We were warned not to venture out on our own and the area itself looked very run down with many derelict buildings. A few years later the area had been transformed and looked quite smart, gentrified in fact. Another fact was the new residents were Moslem and the GMB have sold the building and it is now an Islamic centre.
  2. Morning all from Estuary-Land. I was woken up by Arthur Itis this morning but I managed to get back to sleep again. No papers arrived yesterday and todays haven't arrived yet, I'll be going down to the newsagents later to find out what's happening. Thats it for now, be back later.
  3. Actually I travelled west to Gettysburg, then south west towards Knoxville but before I reached there I saw a sign pointing to Shenandoah Valley National Park so I decided to go there. That by-passed Knoxville and I rejoined the highway not far from Chattanooga. The return was via Nashville, didn't stay there for too long as it was shut. From there I headed back north via the Ohio river valley, again through Gettysburg to New York. I didn't stop in NY though as I went on to stay for a few days with an English friend in Connecticut before the flight home.
  4. The 'Diddlers' were fitted with radio interference suppressers, two flat circular objects fitted to the roof.
  5. My grandparents house in Abbey Wood Road is just out of sight in some of the shots. They rented one of the first televisions for the coronation, unfortunately there was a 'snowstorm' every time a trolleybus passed by.
  6. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. The oak looks as if its been coppiced at some time in the past. I travelled through New York but I didn't stop. I'd picked the hire car up at Kennedy Airport and managed to find my way to one of the tunnels under the Hudson and headed west and then south. The next large conurbation I encountered was Chattanooga, which is one place I would love to revisit. A great website, it obviously goes by postcode as it starts my journeys from Southend-on-Sea. As soon as I opened it it showed a journey to Kyoto. I tried a few other places near and far, one was Ostend in Belgium, it recommended going via Brussels. Just for fun I entered Tirana, Albania. Most of the suggestions were by surface transport.
  7. Morning all from Estuary-Land. Not much fuss from Arthur Itis this morning and he was gone as soon as I started moving about. A little bit of shopping to do then I've got the rest of the day to myself. That brings back memories, apparently you can buy them frozen ready to defrost and cook.
  8. You should always use copper paste when fitting alloy wheels. This prevents electrolytic corrosion between the alloy wheels and the steel suspension. Electrolytic corrosion can also make alloy wheels brittle and subject to fracture.
  9. Sadly I might have to give it a miss because of my mobility issues. There are quite a few places even those where they make an effort which are just not accessible.
  10. Evening all from Estuary-Land. Spoilt for choice for dinner tonight but I settled on the beef stroganoff. Well you would be in Australia.
  11. Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Arthur Itis gave a few twinges this afternoon but nothing serious. I've just parked my car back on the drive. After getting home yesterday I deliberately parked it across my drive because the boyfriend of one of my neighbours daughters parks close to the side of my drive. I've mentioned it too him but to no avail as he doesn't actually park across my drive but so close to it I can't get out with some shunting.
  12. I found this on the net, https://www.travelzoo.com/uk/local-deals/Southwest/Getaway/398925/The-Old-Quay-House/?_v=9215&utm_source=localdeal_uk&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=3001108_text_southeast_deal%3a3001108&utm_content=3001108&deliveryName=DM44840&ec=0&dlinkId=3001108 If I visit Cornwall I would like to give it a try.
  13. There was a character who used to run swapmeets locally. You could hardly call them swapmeets as if you bought in an item to offer to a trader he would want his share (10%) of whatever you received, despite you having paid the entry fee. Some of the traders were a bit iffy as well. There are two regular local swapmeets that are pretty good. Brentwood that has just restarted after lockdown, next one January 14th 2023 and Rayleigh, next one December 28th 2022.
  14. I was surprised as one of the trains is obviously electric. But surely if the track circuits were operating all the signals should be showing red.
  15. What should we use instead? Australia was thinking of making 'Waltzing Matilda' its anthem until its origins were pointed out. https://trishansoz.com/trishansoz/waltzing-matilda/waltz.html
  16. More trams than trolleybuses but none the worse for that. It also covers the early 60's, spot the Minivan towards the end.
