RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 9, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 9, 2022 Good afternoon, everyone. Thank you, eastwestdivide, for indentifying what the small wagons are in Sunday’s photo’. Now, this afternoon, courtesy of a photo’ by Syd Young on Flickr, we go the short distance to Botanic Gardens depot, and see 55018, Ballymoss, as photographed from a train on the Beverley branch. It was waiting to go to Paragon station, on the 10th June, 1981, and take charge of train 1A13, the 09.36, to London King’s Cross. Not actual parts, the large boxes contain an engine and the smaller central boxes contains two gear boxes. The ex GWR Departs have four boxes, two small boxes for gear boxes and two large ones for engines. Al Taylor. 1

Does the apparently glossy smoke box suggest it has been re-painted, or is it a 'trick of the light'? Locomotives I have seen seem to have smokeboxes which are duller than the boiler cladding. I have always assumed this was due to the greater heat fluctuation of the smokebox plating. I suspect the shiny smokebox was due to a repaint as part of a 'sole and heel' minor overhaul. Not sure what this involved but it probably involved repairs and replacements to components in the smokebox and cab - maybe the regulator/blower etc.

RMweb Premium coronach Posted August 12, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 12, 2022 (edited) Thank you for regularly uploading such interesting photographs of Hull and its environments. When I started work as a student technician engineer in the S&T department at York, my third year project was to develop the scheme plan for Hull Paragon resignalling (1983/84 I think), and I spent many days in and around the station. Of particular interest was the period when the main platforms were closed and trains were operated into the high numbered platforms outside of the train shed. At that time, as your photos show, many trains were loco-hauled and included destinations all over the country (Paignton, Cardiff etc). Interesting times. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 12, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 12, 2022 Good evening, everyone, and thank you, Coronach, for your comments. Indeed the year of the resignalling of Hull Paragon was 1984, which I remember well. They were interesting times, and, as you say, many trains were locomotive hauled - much less the unit railway of today. Now, this evening, with thanks to Philip Wheldale on Flickr once again, we stay in Hull, and go to Dairycoates Seven Section, in what looks to be late Springtime, in 1978. Two 20’s, 20020 and 20091 are seen running light engine. 20020 20091 by Philip Wheldale, on Flickr Best regards, Rob.

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted August 16, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 16, 2022 Good evening, everyone, and thank you, EddieK, for the information about the DMU in Saturday’s photo’. I think the curve to the top of the former four character headcode box should be a clue to the unit being a 118 too. ;) Now, this evening we go to Brickyard Lane, Melton, courtesy of a photo’ by Andy Hughes, on Flickr. Look at the variety of coaching stock and NPCCS vehicles in the sidings. 2171 is propelling a match wagon so that track circuits will operate correctly, is coupled to a GWR box van, which is coupled to an LMS BG and then the ubiquitous Mk1 full brakes. No LNER vehicles though. 2171 is obviously just back from Doncaster works unless Botanic Gardens had a painting spree. Also clearly visible are the Westinghouse electro-pnuematic point machines and the air main which runs in a concrete trough. 60psi - you needed to take care not to get a foot caught between the point blade and stock rail.

Did this happen gradually or all at the same time Good evening, russ p. The trackwork was rationalised by firstly removing the tracks for most of the length of platforms 2 and 3, with platform’s 1 track removed entirely in, I think, the early 1970’s. Then, in 1984, the resignalling led to more rationalisation with things left as they are today. The platforms left were renumbered too. Now, this evening, courtesy of Paul Smith on Flickr, we stay in Hull, and go along the Bridlington branch to County Road North, and see 31108 passing the Ideal Standard factory, to the right, with a Scarborough to Nottingham service on the 17th August, 1985.
