devonseasider
Just heard that Peter has died of complications following pneumonia. I'm sure some of you will be aware of him as either railway photographer, author or speaker.

Peter Kazmierczak
His superb photos of South Devon really reflected the Glorious nature of that county. Edit as I can't spell reflected..... Edited October 2, 2017 by Peter Kazmierczak
HSB
I've known Peter for quite a few years and this is extremely sad news!
Andy M
Peter's photography was an inspiration for me from an early age, and for that I will be eternally grateful. RIP my friend.
chrisf
I've been dreading this news. I met him twice and found him to be the perfect gentleman. His place among the greats of railway photography is truly deserved. Chris
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted October 3, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 3, 2017 Likewise l also have been dreading this news. I knew Peter quite well. A real gentleman with an incredibly encyclopedic knowledge of all sorts of railways both at home and abroad. His slide shows were always enlightening and enjoyable. He was one of the outstanding authors on West Country railways going way back. Many of us will have some of his works on our book shelves.
br2975
Many of us will have some of his works on our book shelves. Me included, and they are well thumbed. . A sad loss.
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted October 3, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 3, 2017 I can do no more than echo what others have said, a very sad loss indeed. May he Rest In Peace.
Karhedron
What a shame. I like his books as he had a knack for capturing the more work-a-day aspects of the railway rather than just the same 3/4 shots of the named expresses. His albums are a real treasure trove for anyone modelling the west-country. RIP
HSB
I thought I'd post this picture of one of Peter's last visits to Ramchester. I've added captions to identify Peter along with the user names of the RMWebbers who were there. Although he was best known for his pictures of West Country steam he also visited and photographed many overseas railways. Unfortunately these have been rarely published.
RMweb Gold Not Jeremy Posted October 4, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 4, 2017 Very sad news, a highlight for me of visiting the Exe MRS shows in recentish years had been chatting to Peter on and off the RCTS stand. A lovely chap and very accomplished photographer, I have many of his books and look at them regularly. What a great service he did all of us in recording the railway scene, and not least in carrying on with his photography once the diesels arrived. RIP Peter, much missed. devonseasider
Does anybody know when the funeral is taking place? You beat me to it - had a 'phone call earlier this evening. Wednesday 25th October, 11:15 at Torbay Crematorium. I know that some of you are in that general area.
HSB
I had an e-mail this evening. I suspect there will be quite a few people from the various groups he was involved with or did regular slide shows for who will wish to attend.
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted October 20, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 20, 2017 (edited) I just received this obituary of Peter. It includes a lovely picture which summed him up to a tee. http://www.devonlive.com/news/devon-news/tributes-photographer-historian-peter-gray-645634 Edited October 20, 2017 by Re6/6
HSB
I'm rather disgusted that the Herald Express hasn't even given his death a mention after publishing his weekly column for over a quarter of a century!
bubbles2
Sad news indeed, I have many of Peter's books he was a truly great railway photographer...... I once stood next to him and took a picture, here it is. I bet Peter's picture was better than mine...... [/url]Torre station Devon, when I took this I was stood next to iconic railway photographer Peter Gray who's pictures I have often tried to emulate. I figured if I was stood next to the great man himself I must be in the right place for the best shot. by mailrail, on Flickr">http://Torre station Devon, when I took this I was stood next to iconic railway photographer Peter Gray who's pictures I have often tried to emulate. dibber25
So sorry to hear this news - somewhat belatedly. I contacted Peter, on and off, when I needed particular illustrations for articles. He was always charming and helpful, and willing to entrust his wonderful original slides to publishers. The most recent occasion was a couple of years ago when our annual 'How to build a Model Railway' publication featured the Wenfordbridge line. I borrowed Peter's wonderful picture of a Beattie Well Tank emerging between the cottages at Hellandbridge. Sincere condolences to his family and friends. RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted October 26, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2017 Just received from a friend. "Please see attached obituary for Peter Gray which appeared in yesterday's 'Herald Express'. As you can imagine his funeral, which I attended, was very well attended and he would have loved the send off. A priest from the Railway Mission conducted the service and there were recordings played from the Argo Transacord LP 'West of Exeter' with Kings, Halls and Granges on Dainton bank. Wonderful! There were tributes from members and friends from the Great Western Society and RCTS." Peter Gray obituary HEx.pdf
HSB
It's taken the Herald Express long enough seeing Peter died on the 2nd! The funeral was indeed well attended - I think most of the seats in the chapel were taken. There was just one hymn 'All Things Brunel and Beautiful' and we entered the chapel to Flanders and Swann's 'Slow Train'. All in all he had quite a fitting send off. RMweb Premium MPR Posted March 10, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 10, 2019 Peter's monochrome images are now with Transport Treasury. https://www.transporttreasury.com/f449715166 i've already ordered a few to help with my layout, service was swift and the reproduction quality extremely good. its great to see that his body of work remains accessible to us 1
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted March 10, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 10, 2019 That's great to see them. I was worried that they might have disappeared as so often happens.
