May I make a suggestion about the south end while you’re changing things, please? I’m less than convinced by the line going over a bridge and straight into a tunnel, and I’m sceptical about the ‘worked out quarry’ explanation. I can’t see someone digging such a shallow quarry beside a stream. While you had the helix, there really wasn’t a choice, so I said nothing, but now you have the curve, you could opt for bridge - cutting - tunnel which might be more prototypical.

Just an armchair suggestion for the only part of your layout I have any reservations about. I’m thoroughly enthusiastic about the rest, and look forward to seeing it in its new guise. (And I’d be delighted for someone to post a picture of a prototype to prove me wrong. )

I do agree in principle that the south end is not strictly correct either in prototype or general topography however I just wanted something of a focal point. Perhaps the old quarry theory was a step too far so I'll just call it an escarpment. Sadly there is no real option to modify the off scene approach at the south as I have to the north especially as the layout in its entirety has been moved at least 18 inches that way to accommodate the larger radius approach of the north. I doubt I'll ever alter the south end but time will tell!

The extensions salvaged from the redundant off-cuts will be fashioned into the main hillside to give more continuity to the bleak fells

Similar treatment to the north end

I am undecided whether time was saved reverting to chicken wire and newspaper -v- insulation board, I will say its quite fun to do. The content of the newspapers may be difficult to cover if you get my drift!   :scratchhead: I can assure you they were not mine I have not bought a newspaper since the Seventies! :mail:

Nice to see some chicken wire! A while since I've used any. We have all got used to using insulation board, but the traditional method still works a treat.

Nice work, Mike. This scenic messing is my favourite bit of layout building.

Nothing wrong with chicken wire.

And if you don't have a bird cage to line, I suspect that's the next best use for The Sun...

(I confess I wish I'd thought to line mine on Stockrington with newspaper before apply the plaster bandages)

Cheers

Hi guys,

Thanks to all for the above comments, its nice to see the various inputs.

Martin - I can assure you there were NO copies of The Sun included, only our local free paper and The Star courtesy of an employee who I'm sure only bought it for the pictures because if you quizzed him on any current affairs I doubt he ever read the thing!

Being from the Mersyside area I trust there were no copies of the 'Sun' newspaper  in this hillside  :triniti:  :triniti:  :triniti:  :jester:

Excellent work Mike soon be time to have our weekly fix of wonderful photographs  :sungum:

I thought that's how Mike was getting the smooth contours to the rolling hills...

Rear view also shows the signalbox locker room lights are on, some adjustment to the locking gear perhaps.

attachicon.gif2017-05-29 11.41.08.jpg

A nice period view across the car park picks out an AA motorcycle, a Morris Traveller and a Riley saloon. Oh in the background is Clan Pacific 72009 'Clan Stewart' in charge of a southbound cattle working.

attachicon.gif2017-05-29 11.42.46.jpg

The two coalmen are too busy to even look at the passing Clan.

attachicon.gif2017-05-29 11.43.47.jpg

I did like the Clan's even though the first 5 were scrapped before my interest was sparked, utter madness then as it is even now with the 60's and 90's.

attachicon.gif2017-05-29 11.44.38.jpg

A nice vista of Dentdale

attachicon.gif2017-05-29 11.44.54.jpg

The Clan's crew are lost in that large cab the Standards have.

attachicon.gif2017-05-29 11.45.06.jpg

In case you thought I was jesting this view just shows the driver at the controls, it looks like 72009 got a wash of very dirty coal when passing under the coaling tower.

As the cattle disappears a 9F exits Widdale tunnel.

92058 is hauling an Iron Ore hopper working north to Ravenscraig Steel Works near Motherwell.

Mike brilliant stuff the clan hauling 27 cattle wagons in the long shot is simply superb. Add to that the 9F so well weathered wonderful stuff. Page 167.

Hi Ade,

You're getting very close to completing your marathon journey through the pages of 'Dent Station' I am very pleased you have enjoyed it so far and perhaps just as you do so I may just be able to run trains again after the conversion work possession is lifted.

Hi all,

Busy day on Dent, some would say if I worked as hard at work or in the house........yatter yatter yatter........ you get my drift, my reply is commonly a take on a Bill Shankly classic, "my model railway is more important than life itself!" does not always go down well but being a Glaswegian I'm used to living dangerously. Will post a few photos tomorrow guys.

Hi all,

As promised a few photos to show recent efforts. I have been concentrating on the new extension landscaping shown previously with the chicken wire frame and basic newspaper covering, next I re-used salvaged mod-roc from the section originally over the old spiral supplemented by new mod-roc, pictures show the tale...

If you recall my worries over foam -v- chicken wire as a base, well the results speak for themselves - not in visual terms but in strength! I soon found that the foam is a much more rigid affair and the wire remains fairly flexible, so much so that this photo shows a compromise in the application of some casting plaster to stiffen things up, all will be well.

post-5296-0-30713800-1522525668_thumb.jpg

Has the appearance of a patchwork quilt at present

post-5296-0-14063700-1522525675_thumb.jpg

I should have learned by now either to cover the track or not to ballast it prior to lashing gooey substances everywhere!

post-5296-0-48190400-1522525681_thumb.jpg

I also managed to salvage the rocks and re-position them around

post-5296-0-27928100-1522525689_thumb.jpg

First coat of casting plaster over the bare mod-roc, this was then recovered over the whole area but forgot to take a photo - doh!!!

post-5296-0-68273100-1522525700_thumb.jpg

Easy to see I have some track cleaning work to attend to

post-5296-0-67371400-1522525723_thumb.jpg

A few more rocks were made from the excess casting plaster and placed randomly then the whole thing left to dry and painted with an earthy brown

Soon be time for GRASS!!!!!!!!

It's amazing how quickly the terraforming comes along once you brown it up, isn't it, Mike?  Nice work.

As you say, you *do* need to remember where there are supports under the chicken wire that you can lean on.  Or else be prepared for sink holes that may need to be made into duck ponds later...

Cheers

Well guys I went into the den at 9am with the initial intention of finishing the rewiring to the buildings lamps, an hour I thought - a day it took! I was stumped by a fault s o m e w h e r e, I tried all the usual tricks and in the end fitted another independent 12v DC supply even though the meter showed a 12v reading??? and this done the trick, by then it was 3pm so only a little bit of landscape work was done so no photos today guys. Still can't get my head round this electrical anomaly.

176 pages done, simply a brilliant layout Mike, you didn’t make a lifting of restrictions by the time I finished reading the thread but hey, it’s moving on very well. Looking forward to seeing some locos moving again.

Couple points constructive I hope, the underside of the shelf above the layout appears frequently could this be disguised in some way, curve back scene up and under or some grey sky medium. The back scene joins could line up more flush?

Those new trees appear almost a fluorescent green? Could be a trick of the light and camera and better in person?

Sorry if those points don’t come across as supportive they are meant to be.

Been a joy to read from the start and see Dent evolve as everyone else says it’s a stunning layout. Keep up the good work.

Cheers

Ade
