Thanks Mike for the recommendation regards using the helix system though reading through your thread it appears you had more problem with steam locos than with diesels. Could be that the more modern diesels have plenty of weight in them which gives more traction even in 4mm scale. I would think a Bachmann 47 with 7 on would climb the helix alright. What's you experience?

As to my proposed layout, I'm using Long Meg as a basis with a very liberal doze of modellers' licence!

I'll be moving the timeline and surmising the mine remained open far longer than it actually did.

Having done a bit of investigation anhydrite is ground down and dried out gypsum in powdered form so I'm going to use PCA wagons to transport it rather than hoppers.

The S&C wasn't starved of investment and still had plenty of various types of traffic running over it including the through expresses between St Pancras and Glasgow/Edinburgh, and some others too.

There will be some alteration to the types of signals used. Some of the mechanical main and ground signals will be changed to colour lights.(In addition to the two already there.)

Operationally, it's going to be like I'm going back to my days in the wee mechanical boxes! Not that I really miss them truth be told!

I've done plenty planning. Now I need to get stuck in and actually build it!

Hi Dave,

I obviously 'overlooked' your diesel only operation, I doubt you will have too much trouble on the helix. 'Liberal modellers licence' - its your layout so have it your way.

Shoosh!..you'll get me into trouble!

He closely guards the broad gauge room and all offers of help from the philistines from the 16.5 Alloa next room are rejected out of hand...muttering under his breath we are not fit to lay ballast on the disused branch!

On a serious note It will be a fabulous layout and hopefully he will mellow a bit and allow us to help with the running.

Dave.

Hey, just a minute there, my door is always open.... Anyway you guys produced the multi award winning layout Alloa so why wouldn't I let you lot work on Wharfeside. Yeah the trackwork is my 'thing' so now that is done there's the fiddleyard electrics and the scenery to do, all help is warmly welcomed, then again the new group layout Larbert is the priority at the moment.

A very hurt Dave F.

P.s. It's not quite S&C but a bit further east towards Leeds though some of the S&C trains go through on certain days.

I've been wondering what it might be ever since you said you'll need the heavy duty buffer stops for your own layout! Left me waiting two years for some (worth the wait I should add).

I've gone all goosebumply with mention of the fantastic 'Alloa' and the forthcoming 'Larbert' getting a mention on my Dent thread, I was awe inspired when I first saw Alloa some years ago and almost had to be prized away from the barrier, as for Wharfeside if the trackwork is anything to go by its also going to be a winner. Quality modelling without a doubt.

I am currently reading through the Wharfeside topic now I know its there!

Thanks for the inspiration guys.

Hi all,

Just a quick update to let you know the state of play regarding the alterations. I'm pleased to say that the wiring is now essentially finished with just a few small snags to sort, the usual thing - works one day then not the next! - strange subject electrics. I just took a couple of pics of the control panel to post and the battery died! See what I mean about electrics.

Next week should see the start of some scenic work on the north end extension so it will be back to ballasting, hill building and grass plus building the overhead water pipe just north of the coal road bridge and probably either a culvert or an occupation bridge thrown in the mix.

Meanwhile the battery has now charged so here are the pics of the new panels.

The lower section shows the 'north' fiddleyard route selection with point switching on the lower section

The green lines depict the pair of return 'avoiding' lines which now run behind the layout.

That's it for now guys, at least things are progressing again!

Hi all,

Quick update for you, following some minor electrical faults which took some finding I actually done some modelling on Sunday which made a nice change from the building and wiring done recently.

post-5296-0-87171600-1520320145_thumb.jpg

The extended scenic section is now ready for ballasting now the sleepers have been painted

post-5296-0-53547000-1520320141_thumb.jpg

Prior to painting the rails C&L fishplates have been added at a scale 60ft where the closer sleeper spacing is also evident, this method has been used throughout the scenic section but sadly goes unnoticed in the main

post-5296-0-68799000-1520320137_thumb.jpg

The scenery boundary is set by positioning of this upright and the blue line depicts the proposed shape. Directly behind this are the return 'avoiding' lines.

My mates John and Bryan have volunteered to do the ballasting, yippee!!!!

That's it for now.

SO, you've changed your Username, have you?

Think we wouldn't notice?

Changing the layout, changing your identity. What next? Going TT or even Z?

You can't fool us, Mike!!

Nice embankment, BTW....

Hi Jeff,

I thought about going 'T' gauge but found it was impossible to get replacement motor brushes, disappointing.

The name change is something I have been meaning to do for ages, I think its more relevant than an old clock card no. from a previous employment.

Hi guys,

You may have noticed my Name change previously 'Mike61680' The name change is something I have been meaning to do for ages, I think its more relevant than an old clock card No. from a previous employment and now relates to the very first visit to a Motive Power Depot, Corkerhill (67A) in Glasgow way back in the early 1960's which started me off on this fabulous journey.

Hi all,

Bit of an update on various projects over the past couple of weeks..

attachicon.gif2016-06-02 19.39.15.jpg

attachicon.gif2016-06-02 19.39.33.jpg

One time 9F ex: 92044 has undergone a renumbering and weathering job in the guise of 92058 as this loco has been noted on several S&C DVD's in this unkempt condition...

Mike I’ve not been commenting during my end to end read of your magnificent thread on Dent for fear of cluttering it up with old stuff, but the 9Fs (my favourite B.R. class) are really the business and you’ve done a mighty fine job on them both and with the rake of coals behind they look stunning. Just had to pay a complement here hope you don’t mind

Hi Ade

I don't mind any comments they keep me on track whether they be good or indeed critical in whatever respect, so you fire away at will, glad you are enjoying the journey still.

There will be an update later on today so keep an eye out!

Hi all,

Weekend update shows a little progress at both ends...

post-5296-0-80436800-1520789564_thumb.jpg

The extension has now been ballasted with two distinct grades, the 'up' has new ballast whilst the 'down' is awaiting an upgrade in due course.

post-5296-0-85871000-1520789545_thumb.jpg

This will be the new occupation bridge (No.99)

post-5296-0-63075200-1520789584_thumb.jpg

A narrow farm track will be introduced when landscaping

post-5296-0-59708000-1520789600_thumb.jpg

A quite different viewpoint will be afforded through the Coal Road bridge

post-5296-0-03147100-1520789515_thumb.jpg

At the south end the fell has been cut back to suit the reduced space and a greater incline has been achieved more in keeping with the S&C

post-5296-0-76511900-1520789522_thumb.jpg

Again the view is enhanced now the fell rises quickly

post-5296-0-45246700-1520789494_thumb.jpg

Much better I think.

That's it for now guys, rest assured much 'hidden' work has also been undertaken over the last week.

Edit: Typo

The new order which was to be in the form of the XP64 Brush Type 4 D1733 in experimental Blue Livery, not actually on 1E67 but a class 8 oil train from Leeds to the north.

How long is that Scottish 9F coals, so long and scale 12” to the foot looking it’s quite something, the loco looks spot on and the setting the wagons just add to the overall scene.

Hi Ade,

I'm sure its around 25 wagons plus brake van, this rake was mainly cheap £3.00ish pre-owned Hornby 'Bolsover' or 'Norstand' hoppers which I repainted and detailed, they also have my own fixed coupling system to rid them of those massive full width couplings which were the order of the day, very pleased with the result.

Very nice work, Mike.

The fell above the tunnel looks very good, and as for "hidden" work - that goes without saying.

Really lovely layout.

Jeff

Ah, something we both have lots of experience of.

Mike do tell more about your own fixed coupling system and a photo wouldn’t go amiss

Cheers

Ah I’m close 153 so I’ll wait until I get there!

Probably a good idea as it keeps progress in a sort of order, you will also note a difference when you look closely at the same coal train from there onward as it has the revised coupling arrangement rather than the old Hornby gigantic bars on the post you asked about.

Ahh! Its 9F 92125 with a Carlisle bound coal working.

Following the progress through Dentdale the two 9F's disturb the serenity of the quiet location...

Mike those 9F shots are really first class they look 100% on the money, particularly the low angles.

Edit I jumped the gun there, there was a whole page nigh on of 9F shots page 156 for anyone wondering. where’s the cracking post button!

Hi all,

An update on proceedings with the alterations, I have been concentrating on the 'north' end extension this week...

post-5296-0-96034800-1521408654_thumb.jpg

Initially this underbridge was to be Bridge No.100 however the slope to the rear would have been too steep so it will now be a culvert

The following photos show current situation

I'm currently considering either reverting to the old idea of chicken wire or continuing with insulation board for the land forming so watch this space!

That's is for now.
