Yes the Warships one landed here on my doormat this morning, as Peter has said some familiar shots but mostly new.

Inside was an advert for the new MLI app, promptly downloaded and bought back issues that were previously unobtainable.

It really is a super series of magazines.

The mag repeats the story of the hydraulics being a Western Region want rather than the version OS Nock has that the BTC wanted to trial hydraulics and decided that they needed to be allocated on one region/area, and that they could (for example) have been allocated to Cricklewood/Leicester/Toton instead - the decision to allocate them to the Western according to Nock being a BTC one rather than down to the WR board.

Sometimes I think MLI is a bit lacking in detail just a collection of pretty decent pictures. For example it mentions that 870 was proposed for ETH fitment and that it wasn't possible but doesn't tell you why. Also it says the first 3 D800s were non multi, but they were multi equipped for working with each other and last rant it say the 4 air pipes on D600s buffer beams were all engine control pipes (?) . Two were main reservoir pipes but are the other two regulating air pipes?

Not a bad magazine I just wish there was more reading in some of them

It says, on page 49, the proposed ETH fitting "was not furthered" which does not neccessarily imply it was not possible, equally it could have been cancelled due to knowledge that the hydraulics were to be withdrawn as non standard. Agree however there is often details missed and all too often conflicts; for example D801 is said to be the second prototype on page 26 yet two pages later D800 is decribed as the first production loco (surely that was D803).

#220 on BR (Southern Region) EMUs arrived this morning.

Covers units from EPBs, HAPs, CEPs, CIGs, REPs to next generation Cl.508s, 455s and 442s. Also covers the Gatwick Express Cl.488 conversions, Isle of Wight and Waterloo & City trains.

As is usual with this publication, some of the illustrations will be familiar but most appear to be new (at least to me). There is a real gem of a picture on p.22 of a MLV at Folkestone Harbour in 1961. Mailbags and luggage everywhere (including on the track). Lovely!

Think the author has tried to cover too much though. Could easily have split the units into suburban and mainline, covering the material in two (or even three) editions of the magazine. I mean, only four pages for the Cl.442s; come on..........

I would suspect that multiple units of any description and not as good sellers as main line locomotives, but I do know what you mean, especially if you are modelling one of those classes, you still need to put as much work into it as something with a wider appeal.

The first Gen dmu issue is the only one that I've been disappointed as otherwise the series has been excellent.

I don't mind them but there are often errors in them. The last issue had errors regarding the multi working equipment of the first three D800s, and stated that the D600s had four main reservoir pipes when two were obviously regulating air pipes

I've got myself a copy of issue #220 and I have to agree with the above. It gets rather bitty, especially the second half, and seems to skirt over many classes. Certainly the 508, 455, 456, 442, 488 & 489 classes could have warranted a complete issue of their own. And the underground/city line stock (4vec, 3tis, 438 and 482) could be another (perhaps along with East London electric underground stock).

Shame as what there is shows potential.

Definitely a winner this edition, the next one on the other hand I predict will have trouble selling quite as well....

Er, yes, my subscription copy arrived yesterday (after getting a warning e-mail that the publishers were running late).  As noted it covers the 220, 221 and 221 Pendolino family.  Something of a specialised interest might be a kind way of putting it.

Anyway, in a change to the published programme, the next issue covers "Departmental Locomotives" - from the cover illustrations it will include purpose-built, conversions and locos renumbered into departmental series.

But bear in mind that in 30 years time the Class 220/221/222 family will be held in the same high regard as the Westerns and Deltics, and people will be posting on RMWeb desperate to get their hands on this issue of MLI !

Yes i got mine today, seems they either got the published date a week early, or its a week late, deltics next time!

A week late as it should be every other last Thursday. Found them today in local WHS although looking down the rack of mags could not see them and it was only when I looked at the rake head on from a distance I spotted about 3mm of the LH edges appeared out from behind the pile of another magazine. Just hope they hide the Deltic issue as well as I can see that one selling far more than the current issue - Networker, Juniper and Javelin (one of those issues that someone could argue fails to comply with the title of the mag)
