Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Clevedon - track laying

All systems go! Have started laying the track. I'm ballasting as I go by laying the preformed sections into a bed of pva and then ballasting over. Track plan is now pinned to the foamboards and track positions, ballast shoulders etc are just transferred through with dress making pins. Pictures show the first section and I'm pretty pleased with the results. I'm soldering droppers onto the underside of the track before laying. You can see some of the wires which will need hiding once everything

Sausage Van and Mojo

It's been awhile, almost as if I've been hibernating over winter, yes that's right we do have winter here down under. I went to the annual state railway modelling show over the weekend, and did some shopping. I also had a visit from 1/3 of the Ixion management, and after these long discussion, I think my mojo is back. Some new irons are in the fire, and hopefully at Christmas I will be having a date with the a 3d laser cutter.     Whilst I’ve been absent in model making, it hasn't stop

DU65 Draisine in N Gauge - Part 2

Having spent a bit of time last night researching the various measurements for different componants I had a go at the roof and cutting the windows this morning. This video on youtube has been of great help:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIk-dtuwCdI   Although it is a computer generated video it shows the vehicle in ways that an ordinary video could not.   Last night I completed cutting the components for the outer layer of the engine housing.   This morning I cut a piece of balsa

Sewing a retaining wall

Whitemoor is handy in that it's a fen prototype with a bridge as a view block. The new incarnation of the yard is even better in this respect since significant earthworks have been done to build a cycle path on the west side of the bridge which runs parallel to the yard throat.     I tried to rough in the embankment with Styrofoam initially, but it wasn't a good fit - the real thing is very artificial in form (it's not just an earth bank) and I took it out and used straight-cut 10mm foam bo

Another 2010 deadline

It looks like my 2010 competition layout is going to have take a back seat for a while, which is really disappointing, the reason, well our baby is due in December!! So not really that disappointing As we are still trying to renovate our house, I suddenly have a lot of DIY projects to complete before Dec arghh!!!   OK, so I might not have got anything ready for the 2010 competition, but with out it running I would never have even have started. So to Andy and RMWeb, I say a big thank you.

Flying Banana - Part VI

Hello   I have taken a big step backwards today with the flying banana, it has NOT been a good day...   I found out that one end of the railcar was quite a bit shorter than the other end. The only thing I can think has caused it is because its the end I have chopped around a few times to try and get the front windows the right shape. Because of that it has been repeatedly sanded smooth and with every time thats done I have taken a little more of the roof.     The above picture shows th

O2

No, not the mobile sort, but the ex LSWR 0-4-4 type. I just wanted to make sure Kernow do one and as we all know, building a kit is the best way of ensuring a r-t-r offering appears. Mine is the Gibson variety, acquired years ago for a Christmas present. It doesn't really fit any particular theme, other than a some point in the future passenger alteration for Wheal Elizabeth. It could appear on a non clay goods I suppose. I decided that I needed to free up space in the modelling cupboard and t

15 days left and it's a race against time!

Blimey, where does the time go? I've got two weeks to finish Calshot. Scary eh! Luckily yesterday and today I was able to get a lot of work done on the layout so I'll take you for a little tour...                         Next on the list? Well, I've got to make two holders for the controllers, finish the rest of the 'DAS-ing', Affix the SG infill, affix the stone walls, scribe the rest of the gatehouse, build the castle, build the fascia/lighting pelmet... the list goe

Idea's for a L&Y based p4 test layout .

After a post in the prototype section to see if something could be found small enough to model in P4 as a test bed i am still nowhere closer to finding something. With this in mind i have decided to give up on that for now although i do have a idea.   I want to build something that is no more than 6ft in length that i can put up & play with without to much setting up or take up to much room in the small area i have for a layout. I have to take into account the 12ft x 2ft OO layout that is

DU 65 Draisine in N Gauge - Part 1

In my previous blogs I have mentioned that I wanted to scratchbuild a DU65 Draisine. Over the past few days I have started work on the bodywork for the vehicle and gathering as many pieces of information as I can about it. I have never really researched a topic properly before and this has been one of the more rewarding parts of the project. Planning something like this out properly is certainly the right thing to do, this is especially important considering the fact that the chassis that I have

Now back to work on my simple oval

Well, with the programming track "End of the line" finished I'm back working on my simple oval. Everyone should have a roundy, roundy, or how do you run a new locomotive in ??? It was started early this year, but having nowhere large enough to work on under cover it was dependant on good weather. Then a halt while my old garage was demolished and the new one put up as well as playing around with what I'll now refer to as "End of the line". Now up in the garage and live, seemingly not having su

08 Shunter work

Brassmasters finescale rods   I'd made these rods up a while ago when I first P4'd my one 08 shunter. Unfortunately after getting the first one perfect I rushed the 2nd late at night and broke it after i'd soldered it solid and not taken the correct route of stripping and starting again! It went back in a box after that as it won't run properly without the correct movement within the rods. I got it out this week and decided to fix it up and get it completed again. The rod was fixed with a spar

New and Old Arrivals at Glasburgh

What a busy day for the depot staff. The postman delivered a Class 50 037 in blue (purchased second hand from one of our RM members through classified) and my Class 40 169 back from Jason's with its directional lighting and cab lighting fitted. What a difference that makes! Class 50 was fitted with a chip stolen from a Heljan 47 which can either get replaced later or sold and anothe Bachmann 47 bought. The Class 40 awaits buffer beam detail fitting but the charge hand is in plaster (literally-i

Going round the bend

Progress over the pass few weeks has been slow due to several factors, mainly holidays combined with a little to much modelling relaxation.   However the other half went away for the last couple of days so I got to play.   1st job. Fit the legs. 2nd job put the whole thing together for the first time. Bodge a little to ensure that it fits, phew sorted. 3rd job repair a couple of weak joints on the board, darn. 4th lay some track ... and ... well all appears good so far. I have laid about

Lostwithiel

My lack of modelling this last week has been due to being in Cornwall, staying in the former Brunel works right alongside Lostwithiel station on the main Plymouth to Penzanze line. Lots of trains to watchn some far to early in the morning to be passing 30' from the velux windows. Also very poor signal on my blacberry. But I have been emailing pictures and entries to my Blogger account. if this section of railway is of interest check it out at   www.rjrmodels.blogspot.com   Several videos of

Running night at Manchester and more progress

Last Friday the Manchester Club had a running night where all the layouts were as operational as possible. I'd tested the double track curve laid to date with a pannier tank on the Tuesday and Tony brought something more appropriate to have a short run on what was back in place and also test running across the board joints here on the skew.   A couple of pictures showing how I finished off that skewed board joint from the last update. Pieces of scrap were soldered across the cut sleepers unt

Norwood Road bridge

There isn't going to be much in the way of elevation on this layout, and what there is is nearly all at the road bridge and embankment.     This has been quite tricky to research, since everyone seems to stand *on* the bridge and take pictures of locos for some reason The roadway and path are nicely visible on Google street view, and there are a couple of small pictures of the bridge itself on Flickr, taken on the open day I think. Unfortunately the photographer doesn't have larger version

Scribing setts.....again!

Bit of progress on the turnouts for the extension, most of the plaster has stayed where it's meant to, there are a few spots where it needs a repair. So onto the scribing.     I'm going to build the whole corner unit up, including the new scenic break ready to drop in instead of the current corner section. I may also ease the radius of the curve all the way round to the hidden section, if I do this it should allow bogie cars to use the inner circuit.   Buoyed with the success of this junc

Scenic Work Begins..

Fresh from holidays I didn't feel like wiring so I did some scenery on the single line board instead. I have used a mix of fine scatters for the grazing land as even 2mm static grass is a bit long. So far only 1/2 the planned texturing has been completed as trees, hedges and fencing etc is still to go on. I have more clump bits and static fibres to apply to the embankments too. whole board Branch passenger train in the entrance to the cutting. Little line of bushes is the start of the hedge.
