The Trains of St Ruth

St Ruth is a layout that is designed to be operated and (we hope) entertaining, so deciding what trains to run and how to run them is an important part of the whole package.   We needed a way to operate the layout for its first outing at the Oxford Expo, so a sequence was drawn up shortly before the show (very shortly actually).   As the layout is 'inspired by' Penzance, we have used Penzance as the inspiration for our operating sequence. Caia Road Goods goes EM

OK. Martin Wales has convinced me that EM gauge is the correct way to go and, having looked at the EMGS, I must agree with him. As only a couple of steam engines are required for the period modelled - 14xx, Pannier and possibly a 73xx Mogul, then the conversion outlay will not be too great. Combined with the fact I have all the coaches (B set and Autocoaches) needed, along with most of the wagons seen on the line, it's only a matter of converting the coaches and wagons to 18mm gauge.   Researc

BR Class 94XXX Diesel Shunter

Been Busy.

Hello all just popping in to show you the progress I've made with the shunter.     This shows what I assume to be the forward access hatch, starboard side, I've drilled and cut out the molded grill and replaced it by gluing fine mesh behind it.     The main engine access hatches, starboard side, I removed the old mold by the same method as above and, as per above, glued fine mesh behind it, note the molded hand rail has been removed, somewhat crudely, with a craft knife.     Forw

You can't get me, I'm part of the union ...

This is getting a little silly, now the union link is too short, even though I've made the connecting rod 1mm longer than the drawing     The combination lever looks a little short too, but I think I can live with this.   No way round it, I've got to fabricate two new union links from scratch to the correct length. Not sure if the 2-8-2 link should be longer than a 9F item, but whatever, mine does. I'll tack solder two bits of scrap etch together and make both at the same time then thi

On the fiddle and at the tea

Following a suggestion from Phil Harding (PhilH) of using tea leaves for leaf litter, and the realisation that the current malty breakfast blend I'm currently drinking has an admirable mix of leafy bits, sticky bits and general dust I dried some post-brewing dregs out on a baking tray in a low (50oC) oven. So, to expand on the idea outlined earlier here's a couple of sketchbook pages to illustrate what I'm talking about. class 20 in G, day two of building

A combination of a late finish and calling at my parents to set up his new lap top, has left me with limited time / energy to do much tonight, so I have blended the roof line to the body sides with a rad. Then I shaped a piece of balsa for the nose and bedded it on some P38 filler. when it has dried this will all be blended in too.             John

Taking a break from the tedium that is painting rail sides for Clevedon (yawn), I've been playing with 'Highland Region', Vi trains cl 37 acquired from Kernow Models following 43179's guest appearance at Epsom. It should look very nice hauling a rake of bullets. Also have sprayed up my R&H (aren't photos great for find you've over-sprayed). I'll try and have the latter ready for Scaleforum - just need to find the roof now. It's on the workbench somewhere.

My attention span has obviously atrophied and my focus suggests an eye test is required urgently. Floods in Saxony, Brandenburg, Poland and the Czech Republic

Well, I believe most of you will have heard about the floods which are currently sweeping the eastern parts of the German states of Brandenburg and Saxony, as well as adjacent areas in Poland and the Czech Republic. At least eleven people have been killed thus far and some 1,400 had to be evacuated from their homes in Germany alone. 60014: More cab tweaks

I was unhappy with what I'd managed last time, so I thought I'd have another go.     The H&S poster is from a photo, printed on the computer - the paper is a bit thick, but the real thing appears to be a metal or plastic plate rather than a sticker, so some relief is OK. I should have used a low pass filter to remove the ambient light before resizing though! Over the weekend I was considering what I could fill my evenings with this week. Mrs RJR is organising a youth camp which are eldest 2 are on and the youngest has gone on Holiday with here friends family, so I am " Home Alone"   Any way I decided I would have a go at a class 20 as I could cheat and use the bogie units off the 25 to give me a head start. After a gap of sailing and actually running my collection I have returned to work on the scenery. Looking at other depot layouts has made it obvious that the track/ground areas of parts of the depot need, well starting again. The bold decision to rip up things that are working is a tricky one but I think will be worth it. The Ready Mix guys have been in and after sanding and weathing will look much better I hope.

Mattington - 4mm Scale Layout

As well as the station rebuild I have decided to add a second running line using the existing trackplan as far as possible. Caia Road Goods in N gauge?

Although I've sold most of my N gauge stock that was appropriate to this layout (B set, Autocoaches, etc) to fund stock for my 09 Wetlands Light Railway, I have been grovelling through old stock boxes and found a Bachmann/Farish 57xx, a Dapol 14xx chassis, a Farish (Poole) Class 25 and 47 (both good runners) and an odd collection of wagons, including four 16ton minerals. Most of these chassis were going to be used on a proposed circular(ish) 009 layout based on the approach to Blaenau Festiniog,

All Change at Mattington - Build a station from scratch

Back in February - March it all started with a platform warping problem. I knew at the time that I wanted to replace it with a plastic one to increase working life and promptly went and bought a couple of Wills platform sections. A Ruston rebuild - part 1.

I've now got a copy of "The Wrexham & Ellesmere Railway" and in it is a picture of the yard from behind the good shed - not the view I really wanted but it does show the scrap pile.   So Caia Road Goods only had 3 visible points from the goods shed to the road bridge - the crossover would be off layout.   I must admit it would work well in N gauge on two 5 foot boards, but I feel it may/could be effective condensed into (around) five foot, plus fiddle yard in 00 - with the option to hav
