Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

6 days left - The Latest Update

Another day, another chance to get some modelling done. Feeling more confident than I was yesterday about finishing the layout on time, I just hope I can get it up to an acceptable standard!   I have prepared a short video for you with a couple locomotives running. Just one photo for tonight as I'm in a rush! New Video

DU 65 Draisine in N Gauge - Part 4

Over the past few days I have made some good progress on the Draisine. However there were a few setbacks, but more on those later. The first task I managed to complete was the glazing of the bodywork. I superglued clear ascetate plastic onto the pieces and then trimmed them to size. Following the glazing I tried the body out on the chassis and found the first set back problem. The chassis was too wide which meant some sanding and filing had to be done to get it to fit properly. Even then it

Work Continues

More activity took place on Friday night on the layouts.   For Yamanouchi Oshika, more of the platform canopies referred to in the previous entry were obtained and placed into position. They won't be fixed for a while as there is still much to do around them. What was striking was how much they improved the overall look of the station.   In the 00 corner, work is still progressing on Weyford. Here attention is being centred on the docks, with the platform canopies and various other structu

Pickering Exhibition 2010

Ok so its now a week since the exhibition but I've only just got around to updating this with some pics!   The first issue I almost had was that some months earlier I'd changed the car!! I'd gone from a Laguna Estate to a Vectra Hatch so surely I'd need to hire a van for all exhibitions from this point on!........................     Nope!!! Infact the Vectra has a better load space than the Laguna!! Go Figure!   The weekend went well I think- if the feedback from those there and readin

More real world ramblings

Managed a walk along another section of line when it wasn’t raining. As I have been trying to push my compact camera a bit more lately I thought I’d do a few shots in B&W.   Here are just a few pictures of the remaining bits of infrastructure lurking in the undergrowth.   Crossing gate hinges     Crossing lamp (red glass removed)   Sleepers next to the track bed.   Line side fencing   Unknown post/sign   Remains of the bridges   Kris’s “Avonwick†brid

Callow Lane - point rodding almost completed

I've virtually completed the point rodding on the layout now, having applied primer to the brass rodding last night and painted it today. The only parts left to fit are the rods to the cosmetic point tie bars (which themselves haven't yet been fitted) and the sections of rodding that cross the baseboard joint (these will probably be lift-out sections, as per Bleakhouse Road).   This is where the rodding will emerge from underneath the signalbox:

Where Trains and Trams Meet

Afternoon all!   Well, I did head out for one last photo tour for this vacation - tomorrow will see us back home then. The weather did look a bit dubious, but stayed dry until I had concluded the important part of my excursion . As I had remembered one, shall we say, special operational situation which exists in the town of Markkleeberg - just outside Leipzig to the south - that was where I headed. Markkleeberg is actually served by two of Leipzig's tram lines - the 9 line going to the weste

Fixing paint problems

This time last year I sprayed up a detailed Bachmann Class 37 into DRS Blue, unfortunately at the time the masking ripped off some large chunks of paint on one side ruining the finish. While ideally I;d have stripped the model back and started again, the fineness of some of the etched detail would almost certainly be wrecked.   Instead I am trying to fix the defects. Having read about a method for fixing stone chips in automotive paint where you basically fill the chip with lacquer before san

Historical Resources - Cornwall Industrial Settlements Initiative

I've been collecting resources for years about Devon and Cornwall for purposes other than modelling. I've been using them for modelling research so sharing them seems the natural thing to do. Many of them in Cornwall may suffer webdeath because of the new Unitary Authority - these are based on the post 1974 districts.   All links are to the CISI or CSUS (Cornwall & Scilly Urban Survey) sites.   Main CISI map Main CSUS Map Penwith   St Just Nancherrow-Tregeseal Botallack Carny

Bruckless Junction update

Maybe it's all the rain we had in the last two months, but the vegetation has certainly been growing on the junction.   The ballast isn't really that colour! I eventually found some more ballast and the front section of the main line should get finished next week. Then, when I get back from my hols, I can do a spot of weathering to tone it down a bit

Heljan D9500

Having received a set of Ultrascale 18.83 wheels for this loco I decided to do the conversion. Thanks to all those on the Heljan thread who made the task a lot easier.   I decided not to do a 'how too' photo session because this can be found on the other thread. Suffice it to say the Ultrascale conversion is easy to do provided you follow their instructions. Mine ran ok first time - highly reccomended and sorts out problems of erractic running experienced by others.   I decided to fill in th

Goods Galore

Afternoon all!   I'm back a little earlier today as it's raining rather heavily and because I did get slightly wet on my way home . The forecast says much the same for tomorrow, so I'm not sure whether I'll be able to make another photo trip.   But anyway: I went back to Leutzsch once again, hoping I might snap a couple of goods trains coming from the Leipzig Goods Belt which merges into the Leipzig-Großkorbetha Railway just outside the station. I also captured a couple of impressions of t

Gunnels

Well I have finally made a decision as to what I will be working on at Scaleforum. Along with a couple more Vi Trains Class 47s which require a simple rewheeling job, the main project I am planning on bringing is the conversion of Lima PGAs into a rake of Gunnels.   This morning I have been focusing my efforts on completing the required research, Phil Eames' definitive series on PGA wagons in Demu's Update along with Jon Hall's Gunnel Thread on the DEMU forum have helped work out the work w

Getting hitched up

As I have said in previous entries I have been considering how to couple up coaches. This lead me to look at how coaches were coupled in the past. Coaches were never* coupled with chain, it was not considered safe enough, and using chain means the coaches would consistently crashing into each other, much like loose couples wagons did / do. Most freight does not complain about this sort of ride, but passengers do. To get over this GWR coaching stock used screw link couplings. These allowed the co

One week left (and I'm pushing my luck!)

Click for larger image. Click for larger image. Click for larger image. And here's my first bit of maths in the holidays   Which made the bottom level of the castle. Most of the quay walls have been fitted into place with decorators caulk used for the seabed and any gaps. Paving has been added from scribed DAS clay. The first waves have been roughly started. The castle will have a layer of DAS modelling clay wrapped around it and scribed(!). Can you see the recurring the

Glory Rails (repost)

This is a repost of my blog entry from last night as it would seem something went wrong while I posted it originally .     ********     I admit I drew some inspiration from a certain Bruce Springsteen song for this title . But anyway: The weather today was marked by intermittent rain, which but did not detract on bit from the fact that I came across some rather nice items on my photo tour . So, I suggest we get started!         I first rode down to Johannisplatz on the 12 line wh

Fisherton's next outing...11/12th Sept

Gosh just realised how long it's been since I last updated this blog. Well there is kinda a reason for that... which is that not much has been happening on the personal modelling front with the layout for a while.   However Fisherton Sarum will be attending the Reading Society of Model Engineers centenary celebration event in a couple of weekends time on the 11/12th September.   The event is being held at the Blessed High Farringdon School, Fawley Road, Southcote Road, Reading, RG30 3EP.

The first train.

After a day hard at the soldering iron, the first train completed a circuit of the new Avonwick. It has shown that there are a couple of areas that need tweaking but that's a job for tomorrow!   As an additional bonus I have found that I can get the layout up in the room it lives in. No photo's at this point, just a quick update.

The Waverley's last W/T/T - headlines in model form

How time flies: it's a year ago that I first discovered what booked traffic used the WR according to the 1968 timetable, thanks to the kind provision of original info by forum members. After some frothing on RMWeb3 I've left the subject alone with a basic understanding of what's required to run a convincing service. Yesterday I revisited the passenger W/T/T through the eyes of a youthful basher to see what a Freedom of Scotland might have promised...   On the redeye, we took advantage of a s

DU 65 Draisine in N Gauge - Part 3

Last night involved the following ingredients: Soldering, swearing, excitement, disappointment, elation, a change of plans, melted plastic, flying plastic, adrenaline and a late night.   My Chassis arrived from Japan. Hooray. It was fantastically small and is a great runner. It has front and rear forward facing LED lights and runs fairly smooth for something that small. The main problem I had was that it was too tall to give my Draisine a scale height and therefore I needed to make it shorte

Construction resumes - the Bulleid Branchline is operational...

... well almost. Wiring, scenics still to do - hell I've still got to finish the main layout yet. I think I've created a monster, the layout now stands at 26' 6' x 11'! Comprising:   Phase 1 - the original twin loop and sidings and terminus station   Phase 2 - the return loop, underpass and overpass loops, turntable, terminus became through station and station halt at end of the return loop   Phase 3 - was tweaking the original layout from lessons learned on Phase 2, basically repositioni
