Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

JMA's & KIA's in OO - some progress

The JMA's i've been working on for some time on and off have reached this stage. This wagon still needs three thin vertical stripes of blue adding, where it was welded and repainted along the lines of the hopper partitions, the NP logos have been painted out, with little care, as per the prototype. They also need some weathering, though not too much as the prototype seems to stay fairly clean. These wagons have hit the buffers at the mo, the bogies, which in look are a reasonable represent

Hythe Parkway - In Railway Modeller

Hi,   Not much of a entry I'm afraid   As some of you may know Hythe Parkway is currently featured in the current issue (September 2010) of Railway Modeller. [plug mode on] It now on sale [plug mode off]   (In my best monty python voice) Now for something completely different!:   We have made 3 out of the 4 points to work, this is using a manual system instead of point motors.   This works by a dowel going from the point and the baseboard edge with a knob on the end with a wire going

chimneys galore

Thanks for all the kind comments to my last Blog entry.   Having had my two nephews (4 and 7) and their mum stopping with us for the last week the opportunities for modelling have been limited.   Anyway with them packed off back to Leeds, I've been catching up by mass producing chimneys and roofing the central portion of the hotel. The roof has been made as a separate unit so that it can be lifted off to allow me access to the building to finish making all those windows. I've installed some

A few things on the go..............

Despite being quiet on updating this blog I have been fiddling with a few modelling projects, including making a 2001: moon bus plastic kit, and have a few railway things on the go......   The coaling tower is complete and I now need to decide what to do with it. Keep it, sell it...... umm, err,   I've acquired some etched bits from Shawplan for the class 50 upgrade so a little work has been done on that. But I now realise that I need a new chassis as I can't find the original and have bee

Red double deckers

Amongst the releases promoted by Piko this year, some older models cascaded from Classic to Hobby range caught my eye. These were the refurbished ex-DR double deck coaches in traffic red. This shuffling was accompanied of a RRP reduction from Eur93.49 to 39.99 in the case of driving car, and from 69.99 to 29.99 for the all 2nd. Previously these coaches has only been available in the Hobby range as (innacurate) Metronom examples. With such a saving, some economies were surely inevitable. Nev

60014: Underframe

I made a start on the underframe today. The more I look at detail pictures, the more I marvel at Hornby's tooling - there's really nothing missing.     The first step, as seen above, was to paint the entire underframe with Tamiya Nato Black, which is a useful not-quite black and has a very flat finish which should help the powders stick. It also means that because my finish is based on an out of the bottle colour, it's easy to paint out mistakes.   Then I went looking for pictures - I fou

"Three bowls of Spaghetti" and "The Blue Whale"

'What on earth?' I hear you ask! Just a couple quotes which arose today which made me laugh that seemed relevant. Allow me to explain...   JohnDMJ kindly volunteered to help do the wiring for the layout. (He's good at this kind of thing you see). Now, let's be honest here - before today I had very little knowledge about wiring so having someone else do it and teach me how to do it was fantastic!   Watching out for 'Two-ton-tin-openers' (i.e. cattle) around the New Forest roads, John prompt

O&K D11 has arrived

Happened to go past my local train shop today, and popped in for bit to have a look for interesting bits and bobs.   Andy soon grabbed me to say the Lilliput D11 has arrived (even though the Bachmann web-site still lists it as "Aug/Sep"), so rushed home, gave it a run on the test track, and it's now fully chipped!   Beautiful! Great runner, very good running slowly. The only downside is that sometimes it gets a bit unstuck when changing direction. A gentle nudge gets it on its way though...

Recent (slow) progress

Not had much spare time lately, and have been doing things other than building wagons. I am trying, however, to clear down the vast collection of half built brake vans.   I managed to get the LNER van ready for painting.   The principle body modification was to replace the inner ends with spares from a Dapol kit of the BR version, fitted with a new planked door (the early vans have no windows in the door), Other body modifications included new wire handrails, bigger ventilators on the roof

coombe junction - Excuse my French...

Bonjour Tout Monde - Good Moaning - Good Morning - It's ironic that being some 150km's South of Paris, and the weather a good 10°C cooler than Barcelona, that I am missing doing some modelling - Next week, I will return and probably set out the layout, ponder a while and put it back uninspired to move forward. Whilst in France, early morning mountain bike rides, to escape 'The Outlaws' for a while, are enjoyable as there is a deserted railway line adjacent. What is it about discovering a few r

What a lot of (hot) air...

This week I've found myself 'playing' on Paxton Road quite a lot with my sound fitted green 37...   So this evening I did some work on the layout too and started on the security fencing around the warehouse, using the Knightwing plastic stuff. It's quite a close fit in the front siding but I think it looks good - and the cinders ballast needs some weathering and overgrowth adding but I will do that before the fence is fixed in place!   I love my new airbrush too... This is the £99 dea

Tan lines...

Tan lines? Well kind of - with the masking removed we're nearly there - definitely on the home straight now... ...and I'm chuffed to bits! She looks superb and I'm really proud that 'I made this' What's new? Well the masking is done and the stripes are sprayed, the details are fitted (buffers, couplings, window frames, Sentinel plates) and transfers added (MSC and No, plus overhead warning flashes). I've test fitted a silver sword and one headlight lens too... So what do you think? Do

Barrow Road - Bachmann Peaks

Back front holiday and I find a set of Ultrascale wheels for my second Bachmann Peak has arrived. I had forgotten all about the order intended for my proposed conversion of split head code 'D95' to D13 with 'corridor connection doors.   This conversion was inspired by a photo purchased from Rail Photoprints of D13 passing the side of the shed on 2B93 the 10.49am local infill turn from Bath Green Park to Temple Meads. http://www.railphoto...565-RP.jpg.html   I decided to take a break from th

Help Needed With Broken Buffers.

Hi all, wouldn't you now it, SNAFU, as part of my shunter upgrade I planned to replace the molded plastic buffers:   as exhibited here:     I plan to replace them with brass buffers generously provided by a fellow modeller:     this left a rather convenient mount:     Unfortunately...     this is were the rear right hand buffer mount should be, it was broken off in an accident and has since disappeared, even more incensing, the replacements are a near perfect fit. so any h

A Giant Drag

During the past two weeks I have been mostly doing modelling activities that do not really show tangible results and as such I have not posted anything. However after a week of working away I thought it was worthy of a blog entry to give me a boost to keep going.     The first thing that I shall mention is the fact that I have now painted the viaduct (several times in fact!). I was not happy with its plastic finish so I initially gave it a grey wash to see if that would make it look a bit

A Ruston rebuild - part 2.

The etchings were cleaned up using a file (gently!), 3 sided scraper and, most importantly, a fibreglass burnishing brush. Once everything was cleaned I could start thinking about re-assembly. As before I started with the footplate, which revealed a bit of a problem; (Note the Gibson sprung buffers, these come with square bases which need to be filed rectangular). The lower part of the bufferbeams had been filed back too narrow for the re-constructed frames. So I cut pieces of scrap etch to

Six months on

We have now fixed down the track, added lights and static grass. There a number of new additions to the layout including howes sound chipped NSE 108, DBS 37 670 St Blazey and large logo 47572, Ely Cathedral. The lights add another dimension to the layout at night and bring out the best of it. There are still a few more bits to add including signals, more static grass, people and possibly overhead wires from Dapol.     47 573 The London Standard waits on shed   (Left to right) 47 535 Un

Caia Road Goods - The reference period

I've been trawling the internet to try and find some pictures of Caia Road Goods, without any success, but I did find a series of books by Bridge Books who have a series of pictures books of the Wrexham area. Volume 3 has a c1900 picture of a Cambrian Railways 0-4-4T with some wagons in "Cambrian Leather Works Sidings", which I assume is Caia Road Goods Yard, as the works were situated in Rivulet Road which ran parallel alongside the railway. It sates that the siding awas to facilitate the loadi

End of the line

Well almost the end of the line ........ The day my MDF was cut was 13th July, here we are 13th August and apart from some very minor 'touch-up's' the scenic programming track is done. This week the weather has been a little damp, that combined with being out nearly every evening caused some delay. As an example my Fresian cows are now brown although still need some detail painting. The tractor has not been 'worked over' with mud and grime hence all these small side elements not yet added to th

Missing Link Found!

Some may say that the recent server outage has lead to a jump in progress, but really I just found the time at home   So, armed with nothing more than a couple of bits of scrap etch soldered back to back, a file and an 0.85mm drill I started to fashion new union links for the 2-8-2.     note filed down fingers!   A quick go with the razor saw, unsoldering and final fettle gave me two nice new links     Took about an hour, as do most jobs with this build ...   Here's a photo of

Bachmann diesel bogie mod, sorting out the rocking 'AWD' problem!

On Friday at the Bluebell 50th I was moaning to Richard from Bachmann about their banana shaped bogies that were really bad news in P4. Some of mine are bad enough that they still rock on the gear after the bearing holes are filed back.   Richard however pointed out a fairly easy mod you can do to get around this problem and he'd done it to his P4 locos. It turns the drive into an A-1-A arrangement but this is perfectly acceptable in my Heljan Western so I have no problem doing it to 37 and 47
