Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

OMWB... DCC installations...

Been a while... lack of time on the PC at home being the main reason. However, I've finally got around to being able to work on some of my Dad's extensive loco fleet. I have a total of 19 decoders to install. Some of them will be straight forward DCC ready plug 'n play installs, but I also have a couple split chassis to tackle as well.   Seeing as I've never worked on a split before, it'll be a learning experience to say the least!   The 19 decoders:   The Loco fleet I have to start

More painting progress.... and GWT loco hauled

A small amount of further progress today, I have started to reassemble 37612, unfortunately the doors/side grills are elsewhere so I cant finish the job yet. it will also still require minor touchups to the blue paint and a coat of varnish to get a constant finish over the repairs (most annoyingly the can I have here has a blocked nozzle despite having only used it on 2 locos earlier in the year...) The other work which is still outstanding is all minor, with the lights needing black paint,

A bit further ahead with the Atlantic

Holidays, DIY on the house, a couple of turnouts and finishing off a couple of other locos have got in the way of the Atlantic lately but I have done a bit more on it over the weekend.     The tender needs a bit more filler where the top plate fits the body, I need to make a new air vent and find some buffers.   I have fitted the cylinder block casting, as its a butt joint I not too certain how well it has stuck, the cylinders need filling and I need to replace the cross heads / rods as

Building bridges - the easy & hard way !

The St.Oval fights back - or why didn't I think first !!   St.Oval has 4 bridges, the tightly curved viadict ..... or is it a bridge with 3 spans, 2 over the stream, one for road the other the branch line, then a much higher road over bridge. These are never as easy as first thought. First the Viaduct has not been a problem yet although putting the 3 arch linings in on a curved structure will no doubt cause me some difficulties. skinning with plastic card will be easy enough when I find which

Southeast Steam Railway - Finish and Running!

Hi Guys,   It has taken me 18 months, but the Southeast Steam Railway has now been finished. I was working hard from 08:00 to 16:00 on Sunday to finish the bridge, the final major piece in finishing, there is the odd thing to do like install lights in buildings, but 99% of it is done.   These photos show the finished product:   Overall view of Bigporth:   Close up of Station Building:   Goods Yard:     Close up of the Grounded Coach:   Carriage & Wagon Restoration Cent

Building Resources - Devon Conservation Area Character Appraisals.

These documents are recent and give plenty of detail about the coonservation area. More importantly they usually give plenty of high quality photographs.   I've linked to the man websites where I can, but some of the detail is proving elusive. I will update as and when I can.   Each is arranged by the authority carrying out the appraisal. After each authority is the list of areas covered.   Dartmoor National Park Authority   Ashburton, Buckfastleigh, Chagford, Crockernwell, Drewsteignt

An Etched Thompson This Time

As part of continuing the Ultima resurrection I needed to test build the bits so I spent a bit of the bank holiday assembling the pantry third because it looked interesting. I've now discovered it only ran in a pair with another coach so I guess I'm building one more etched Thompson than I originally planned. Looks ok to me although I need to fit partitions and the like. Plus the buffers are a bit of a guess. I've not found a definitive reference as to whether it should have oval or clipped buff

Jinty Jottings

For a little while I've wanted to build a 'simple' 2mm loco project - I have a couple of kits and etches for various 2mm locos, but I've never plucked-up the courage to finish any of them (apart from a chassis for a J72 loco that I built quite a few years ago now). Having almost got to the point of being able to run a train on my shunting plank layout, I decided to tackle one of the stored projects.   A year or so ago I started a project to build a Jinty loco, and bought a Graham Farish 'Jint

The final push?

With a deadline moving ever closer I've still got loads more to do. However, I have managed to achieve the following: . NG Infill painted . Stream grass banks added . Castle horizontals scribed . Bottom section of Castle scribed and painted . Sea painted . Sea walls painted . Fascia fitted . Some weeds added . Ballasting started   But I've still got loads to do: . Paint SG concrete infill . Scribe the rest of the castle . Paint the castle . Build the castle roof and gun emplaceme

More painting

Making good use of a warm bank holiday Monday I have got on with some painting,   First up, my DRS Class 37 (Which will be 37612). Black roof was sprayed, masking removed (thankfully with no damage) all looking good. This just needs the light clusters painting black along with detail painting the grills (and cantrail stripes) + transfers & Shawplan windows and it will be finished. Most annoyingly I have now found out that its completely out of period for the layout. While '612 was in

I've been building stock boxes : one last weekend and one this. And here are the results: which is the air braked box and the steam age stock for the shunting plank.   There is absolutely nothing original about this - the idea was taken from Chris Ellis' book "Next Steps in Railway Modelling" , published a couple of years ago, in which it is credited to Stuart Robinson. The construction should be obvious from the photos - take one box file (price 3 quid) , rip out the spring clip and i

Maybe I should have had a practice run...

Okay, the LED oil lamps light up as expected, but it turns out that in the dark, there is lots of bleeding light from the actual body. I think that next time, and before I fit them fast for sure, I will repaint the lamps. It would help with the delicate bits of trying to make it look like there is an iron on them as well. The single 1.5mm hole worked well, as opposed to the two .8mm holes suggested in the article.   And a question. Nigel Burkin's book refers to shuffling CV values to get t

Class 20 grill rework

I kept looking at the last set of pictures and the louvre doors just didn't look right. Then I realised the proto the frames are more prominent, to louvres don't protrude as much.   So I did a bit of rework and added an extra frame. I think it looks better now.       John

Platform resurfacing work at Scrayingham

While watching the build up to the Belgian Grand Prix this afternoon, I prepared the new platform surface for Scrayingham. I had scraped all the previous ballast platform surface away earlier (and hoovered it up so I don't get in trouble!). So I set about with a paper template and a sheet of Slaters brick embossed plastic, the same as used in the goods shed area which is supposed to be locally sourced brick, afterall the Sandhutton line did serve the brickworks at Claxton, and that formed a larg

Thoughts on 'Klear' for ballasting and permanency

Having used Johnsons 'Klear' (original formula) for fixing virtually all of the ballast on Callow Lane, I've been having mild doubts about it's suitability in the long term to hold everything in place.   Whenever I've done any work in the vicinity of any ballast, I've often found bits of ballast coming loose, and the overall impression I've got is that the body of ballast is slightly brittle and fragile.   I'm keen that I don't get ballast coming loose for a pastime, when the layout starts t

Right, I've got at least part of a project finished.

Princess Alice now has a numberplate and nameplates on. She also has lighting up oil lamps on the front.   Photographs of various stages follow.   This one is my bench in the conservatory. It's brand new, hence the lack of sun protection at this young stage. For a change, I've actually got some prototype photographs for a project. Only two, but they helped in that I now know that there is some sort of pipe at the front of the frame which can be taken as being represented by the wires f

Kidmore Yard N

For anyone following this N Gauge layout's construction, the house & garden have now been completed - although not as yet fixed to layout. Pictures etc may be seen at Kidmorengauge.weebly.com. This is the final structure needing to be built & all that remains is the detailing & final weathering of the entire layout.

G scale class 20 in Primer

The last couple of days have seen the 20 have some more small details added followed by a first coat of primer.           This of course highlighted all the lumps bumps and surface scratches caused by over enthusiastic sanding.   So an application of P38 body filler was needed followed by a couple of hours of sanding and "tweaking"           Of course the second set were always going to look better as they were taken in sunlight !   If you fancy a change from Rail

5 Days to go !

Most of you will be aware now that next weekend will be the first YMR show. As Potters lane will be one of the YMR modules lining up in front of the modelling press I thought that it would be a good opitunity to show off some of my westcoast miniatures so this week I have been building not one but four to take to Cornwall with me. Following on from my last commision I have built another N gauge station building and this is complemented with a matching N gauge signal box. Following a suggestion f

Static Grass Applicator

I had time for some photography, but ended up with a mixed bag of subjects, so I split this into two posts, one from the layout and another from the real railway.   The “Noch off†static grass applicator. Total cost less than £10. Made from an electric fly swat, an icing sugar shaker, with removable screen. Also shown is the fine nozzle made from a cut down plastic kitchen funnel and some mesh.   Some of the effects produced using a mix of 2mm and 4mm fibres.

5. The Carriage Shop - Concrete Progress

Works started at last in firming up the baseboard. The trackwork is "customised" Peco Code 75 - customised by having the outer edges of the sleepers cut back to the edge of the chairs. All of the rails within the carriage shops were flush and level with the road surfaces necessitating in the case of the model, bringing the level of the baseboard up to the that of the rail. This was done by using a layer of 3.5mm cork, followed by a layer/s of fine surface filler. Cutting back the chairs allo

First stab at weathering

Armed with a copy of 'The Art of Weathering' by Martyn Welch and 'British Railway Goods Wagons in Colour' by Robert Hendry I've had my fist stab at weathering. Please let me have some feedback on these efforts, they look OK (if incomplete) to me but then I'm biased   In general I want wagons to have a run down, well beaten look, as I'm modelling the end of steam BR era, so lots of equipment is just around the corner from the scrapyard.       First up a unfitted Bogie Bolster C with load,
