Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Northwest by northeast

...might be the theme for the tour I did today . The first leg of my trip took me in the general direction of Wahren in the northwest of Leipzig.         The suburban stations up here are located in a trough - this line being served by S1 line suburban trains and stopping services to Weißenfels. This here was RB26712, inbound from Weißenfels with a few minutes worth of delay and with 143 831 at the head.       The station - well, it actually is a stop or "Haltepunkt" as it does n

Summary of efforts while in France. Pictures to follow when I've taken them.

So far I have spent several hours, as has my son, rubbing the numbers off my City of Manchester, so I can change her to Princess Alice. The numbers on the Hornby model are larger than those on my photos, and need to be taken off, as therefore for the same reasons do the tender letters. The problem is that on the right side, I have taken off enough to reveal the plastic underneath, but still I can see the shadow of the numbers , so I may have to go to Town on the weathering after. We’ll se

Hello 'details' my old friend...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I quite often find myself re-visiting models!   This time it's my resprayed Bachmann 37/0 - now masquerading as 37013. I've fitted a DCC decoder this evening as Paxton Road progresses and my Dynamis is semi-permanently installed now, and looking at the details things felt a little chunky and crude compared to my latest 37, Caerphilly Castle.   So I dug out the Hornby Class 31 buffers (a huge improvement over the Bachmann effort) and the 40 links per

Well Lubricated

As promised, I returned to the D49 today. And then remembered why it got put to one side.   Not only did the cab roof need attaching, but there was also the (very) small matter of the Wakefield Lubricators. Even with a good kit (and this is an excellent kit) there will be a point where you have to use some initiative. Despite looking and relooking, I could find no trace of etching or casting for the said item.   The approximations that I have cobbled together, are plastic cubes from microstr

History meets modernity

...might be a suitable title for tonight's round of photos . My plan for today was to first have a look at the tram terminus at Knautkleeberg on the far southern outskirts of the city, which has been extensively rebuilt. Back in spring 2009 there still was a reversing wye down there, which has now been replaced by a generous reversing loop around the completely redesigned square in front of Knauthain Station.         Between 7.45 am and 1:09 pm the 3 line is cut back to Gerhard-Ellrodt-S

Dolgoch, a first attempt in white metal soldering...

I recently bought the GEM kit of Dolgoch, as I just happened to have the Arnold chassis donated to me a year ago and I've been planning to have a go at this little loco, as it's about as close as I think I'll get to a Sandhutton loco, which themselves were well tanks, albeit with outside frames and walshearts valve gear. In 009 that isn't getting scratchbuilt (not by me anyway!). Below are a couple of photos of one of the Sandhutton locos, and Dolgoch so you can see the similarities (and yes, I

Scaleforum

Not long left until Scaleforum.... I am going to be helping Mike Anson with the D&E Modelling demonstration at the show (I will be covering the post privatisation era).   I am rather limited as to what I can bring as for the next 4 months I will be renting a room while I wait for the construction on my new place to be finished. As a result there is no space for any model stuff, all the stuff I will be taking to Scaleforum must fit in a single sports bag out of the way (and small enough

Let there be light!

Whitemoor has an awful lot of quite distinctive modern lamps - any picture shows them quite well. I need at least three, probably more.       I was thinking initially about using this N-scale Viessmann lamp since they should only about 50mm tall in 4mm, but I wanted to try and build one first since the shape looked relatively straightforward, and the Viessmann lamp doesn't have the wider section (cable cabinet?) at the base of the post. I bought some 3.2mm square brass tube (since the insi

2 week break

A quiet 2 weeks plus as I have been on my hols, walking in the peaks and a quiet week in Kent.   Visited both the Peak rail centre which for me was good for photos of a few wagons and the coach preservation shed and The Midland Railway centre at Swawick. loved the Midland museum the shed with the Duchess and Princess along with the replica buildings being constructed.     I have a couple of K's 6 wheelers to rebuild and seeing how the straps and rods fit together will assist     Insi

Railfanning in the rain

Hi again ...   Well, the title says just about all: My photo session today took place mostly in the rain - however, as it was fairly warm it was not actually unpleasant. Today I decided to head over to Engelsdorf - this station being located close to the marshalling yard of the same name. So, here's what I got...           This here was VT 020 or 650 552, another "RegioShuttle" DMU owned by Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn, seen here working the MRB88293 service to Eilenburg Ost...

Operational musings - locomotives

I've just come back from the Three Spires show in Truro (Falmouth MRC), and we all had much fun operating 'Engine Wood'.   This was a very nice show, and friendly hosts, and there were some other nice layouts present as well. It was particularly good to have the chance to have a good look at the lovely 'Treneglos' and meet 2Manyspams and his colleagues!   I found myself admiring the operational discipline of the 'Treneglos' team, in terms of the fact that you only ever saw locos on their lay

The light at the end of the tunnel

Is just someone with a torch bringing me more work.   A couple of friends have asked me for pictures of where I'm up to with Bad Horn, and I've not got round to taking any recently. I've ground to a halt for want of inspiration and materials (although signals and bufferstops are on their way), and to try and motivate myself I had a look at all I've done so far. And felt utterly disheartened. I still haven't got the backscene effectively blended into the scenery, although it has improved

And its goodnight from him......[frustration and hibernation]

Excuse the large pauses between entries but work seems to have taken over this summer [!]. Due to imminent work relocation Wiganish will now go to sleep for a couple of months whilst move etc happens. I thought by now all track would be layed and scenics would be under way, not so. I have finalised track plan and 50% is layed, shed entries and fuel/stabling sidings to do. The shed building and amenities block are done so are fuelling and storage structures. Hopefully the shed will begin to be fi

Outstanding projects

One of my many long term ongoing outstanding projects is an un-motorised 4-VEP in blue/grey to run with another powered unit. Today I've been working a little on it almost completing the underframes with Ultima etched truss rods and BHE cast details. However, I'm short of a couple of underslung fuses and, more importantly, one mk1 Farish coach roof. Does anyone have a spare or know how/where I can get one cheaply and easily?       G.

Class 87 for Caldew Pt2 (The Roof)

Hi All,   Slow but steady work continues on the Class 87, Lima body on a Heljan 86 chassis to reiterate.   For the best part of this week I've been working on the roof of the 87, which has involved cutting up the Heljan "Class 86" body to remove the roof as one piece. And removing the chunky and fairly fictional lima roof.   So after a lot of sawing, filling, test fitting, more filling, more test fitting, a bit more sawing and you guessed it, some more filling. The liquid poly came out, a

Some half decent snaps and a fiddle yard

Yet more progress today... But first, some pictures of the layout with backscene held up by a willing volunteer! I'm hoping to have the backscene free standing once I work out how to achieve this.                   Dad has very kindly fixed the traverser fiddle yard onto the layout. This means that the traverser top can slide over the control panel supports which should save some space. The traverser was originally built for MkI but rebuilding it slightly has meant it is ea

Getting stuck in - From: K2yhaven

Remembers those Solvite ads decades ago where they papered a bloke to a plane and flew around and the one where they pasted him to a board and swung him from a helicopter? I never believed them for one minute but I now reckon they used this stuff:       It's 1mm thick, 38mm wide, double sided and self-adhesive on a thin core of foam. I thought it would be worth a go for laying the track on the train turntable onto expecting something that would allow secure fixing without the use of pins (

Go East, Where The Trains Are Great...

Evening all ...   So, here we are back in Leipzig, and there's an initial round of photos to show you already . Having caught my breath after arriving at our place, I then decided to try and make something good of the sunny weather we were having this afternoon, and caught the tram to head over to Heiterblick, hoping to catch one of the Leipzig-Cottbus regional express services on the open line.       Heiterblick Station is located near a fairly large commercial area, but has only a sm

Yamanouchi Oshika - Platforms

Something which has been bugging me for a long time on the layout are the platforms. They are too British, and to me broadcast this fact at the top of their voices. Whilst all around the station is looking more and more Japanese (I hope!) the plaforms resolutely remain forever England! This however is about to change .   On today's trip down to the local emporium, I returned with one of the Kato Unitrack island platforms to see if this could be readily adapted to fit our station.   On

Update...Back from hols in France...have swapped rain for heat and looking forward to getting back in the modelling groove.Plenty of things to get on with, namely progressing the third board of Moorswater and also the second phase of scenics to the second board, however whilst away I thought of an interesting little addition to the rolling stock, but I am struggling a little with my research. At Moorswater, in the early nineties, ECC had one of their own shunting locomotives, named Sharon trans

Progress Report

Well it's been quite a while since I last posted an entry in my blog...so most definitely time for an update!   There hasn't really been any work done on the layout itself, other than a move to the other side of the room so that I had more space for it, it's now grown to 12ft x 2ft, but I'm still finding that I don't quite have enough space to do what I want to do.   There's been a few new additions to the loco roster, mainly through a few ebay purchases, I've gone from having 1 1/2 engine

Shelves, the key to layout and workbench progress.

This week I acquired the CD shelving I'd long promised myself, having identified it as the main delay factor on the layout front. How the divil does that work, you ask? Read on and I shall tell you.   The under-layout mainly comprises cascaded Ikea storage units, of which eight drawers are earmarked for T&RS. Instead of this however, they've temporarily been full of CDs. For about a decade. With nowhere to safely store locos off-layout, as a result it has taken on the car park appeara
