Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Double Heading

I'm still working on having things moving on the layout at Expo with under three weeks remaining.   Several weeks ago a pleasant suprise landed in my inbox, an opportunity to test build two new locomotive chassis kits. A short exchange of emails later and a subsequent jiffy packet arriving through the letter box and we were away.   The chassis are to fit the GF 57xx body and the Dapol 0-4-2T     Also included was a jig for assembling the frames     First the frames are bushed befo

coombe junction - Back on TRACK...

Update - Earlier this week, I returned from work to find a package outside the front door - the rituals of opening said packages were recently covered in someone elses blog and I must admit, one nice thing about ordering from Hattons is they still wrap parcels like this... more on the contents a bit later...but first back to matters in hand...   As a break from loco detailing, I have started the track for Board 3, which will comprise both Moorswater dries and the viaduct. Following my recen

The first lines go down temporarily

Well the first track is down temporarily though with the correct measurements on top of the card that is hiding the holes on the boards.   The track is down for the freightline and stuck down with blu tac so I could mark up the spacing of the track and once I get the foamboard down at the other tracks down I will fix down the track properly but at least there is some track down at least.   I've attached a pic of the scenic board I'd done and I know there are what appears to be bubbles under

The beginning.

This , I hope will be the beginning of the project of a lifetime. One that I have been tinkering with since 1985, so far without success. UNTIL NOW.       This is the first step of what should be an interesting project, it is a test etch to see if making the POP Train is possible as an etch. It appears that it is , so the next stage is to cad it up to the correctlenght and have this etched. Watch this space!   cheers   Shane

Ballooning Along

Assembled and given an initial coat of paint it still needs some tidying up and glazing, as well possibly as doing some minimal interior work.and detailing with pipework etc     It really ought to be lined out but its way beyond my skill level and I suspect any attempt to do that would make it look worse not better

JMA Transfers

Having bought the transfers over a year ago, i've finally got round to applying them. Thesepictures, posted by Beast 66606 have been a huge help. thanks! This wagon is virtually complete, transfer-wise, the others have had the toothpaste stripe applied and the NP logo. The majority of the transfers are small printed details and i'm impressed with how small the type has been created and is still very legible. Ive also made the lever for uncoupling the buckeye type coupler, brass wire bent to

First Run

Got the right hand coupling rods soldered up last night, looking better than the left so might do some remedial work on the left set once the chassis is all set up and running....   So with a few bits of electical wire insulation on the crank pins to hold the rods in place power was appled to the motor     it runs, just. I did expect this, the crank pin holes were drilled 1mm which is barely enough to allow the pins to pass through. I will ream out these holes a little at a time working i

Weathering Victorian Railways Stock (Oz)

Finally re-instated to a live pool back on RM Web, fingers crossed i'll even get some modeling done!!   After an appearance on Ian Hunters Broadford Layout at the EMGS show in Bracknell, i've started to get to grips weathering some of my Australian Victorian Railways stock. Some phots of A85 and a VHGF grain hopper:                 There are another 7 VHGF hoppers on the table and i've just stripped A70 down for some attention.   Thats all folks!   Al.

Roof vent

I have been trying to work out how to make the circular fan cover for the roof,     In the end I couldn't come up with a clever plan so had to resort to cutting and filling it out of a piece of 60thou plasticard. I marked it out, drilled holes, then opened them up with a square needle file an hour of filling later I had a grid pattern and I just needed to cut off the outside to make it circular. Then glue on. I must be mad ??     I did have plans to cut out under the grill but decide

From using Lego to Modelling Bread and Hills

I have been plodding on slowly since my last blog. Still a lot to do but its starting to get better. Here is a picture of the SAI kits I have constructed that are built into the hill: As well as this I have continued developing the Lego/Plasticard building. Since it has a very large shop front I decided that some sort of display for the window was needed. Therefore I constructed a crude stand for displaying the freshly baked bread: This was then painted Red and a yellowish colour was used

Sprint finish

The Graham Farish 150, like its bigger brother, is a cracking model of a common unit. When it was released, a lot of comment was made about the purple engine, accurate for Porterbrook owned units I believe. However, the ones in use round here tend to have noticably bright yellow engines, and it's amazing what a transformation a lick of yellow paint and some black dry brushing makes to the overall look of the model. Additionally, the seats were painted blue, which adds a bit more interior relief.

Smells Like Teen Spirit - part 2

Well, I guess this is what you call finished. There's the odd blip, as usual, but I'm happy to call it done. Paint is Tamiya sky blue with a drop of white, and the yellow is Railmatch late warning panel yellow (I forget the years they print on it, 88-03?), with a gloss black underframe, all given a top coat of Railmatch satin varnish to tone down and bring it together. Detail painting is mostly Games Workshop acrylic, with MIG powders for the roof weathering. I prefer to do locos in grubby condi

Paynestown - station end

A few pics showing some of the development at the station end of the layout. The road curves steeply uphill - the idea here is that there would be a gentler approach "off scene". Steep roads aren't uncommon around here, though.     There is an area to the right of the bridge which will eventually contain another building, but for now it will be developed into a patch of fenced-off wasteland.     Overall view with the fiddleyard board in place, as yet trackless. This is slightly longer

"Blog Revamps...!"

I'm working on bringing up to date all of my three blogs. There's this one here, with the current standard of black/red/white, then the external Copley Hill blog, and The British Railway Series blog, all of which have different designs while conveying similar information.   I'm working on the external Copley Hill blog first, working on a new template to try and freshen everything up:   Copley Hill Blog   See what you think - as always, feedback greatly appreciated.

..and its built.   spent yesterday evening on 2 kits for a diesel/fuel depot i probably wont ever get round to modelling a Dapol Tank wagon, and the Knightwing diesel shunter     the Dapol kit, being the old airfix model, required a bit of tidying up, nothing major like just some sanding and filing to get the tank halves together proper, yet was finished within 20 mins, added 3 link couplings, then thanks to the brilliantly easy paint scheme 2 minutes to paint and half an hour to dry!

Bruckless Junction update

Before I went off to Railex with Clinkerford, I did promise to put a few more pics on the blog when I got back. Unfortunately the ballast ordered eight weeks ago still hasn't arrived. I'm beginning to wonder if the supplier has ceased trading, as I am getting an answerphone and no replies to my emails, and they have banked my money! However, back to Bruckless. Dug around in my scrap box and found enough scenic material to make a start in one corner, amazing how much difference it makes, even if

Progress, and lots of it!

I visited DEMU Showcase over the weekend and found myself both inspired and over-awed with the quality and scale of a number of the layouts there. It was a great show and re-ignited my enthusiasm to get something finished and fit to 'run' so to speak. On top of that I've promised Richard at Traction an article on the finished layout and some exclusive photos - so that's motivation too!   So what have I been up to? Well the warehouse is glued down and the ballasting has been finished. For the

Slight change of plan.

Hello, Over the last few weeks i have had some time to catch up on modelling, much of the work has been completing all the trackwork in the fiddle yard but whilst clearing up one evening i found my old fueling point from the original Smithdown rd, On the new layout the triangle on the upper level between the mainline and freight branch was a bit sparse so i have been trying to think of what to put there, first i thought of a warehouse but probably to small, then maybe a scaffold yard or somethin

Primer and black

Its been a frustrating day ! Its accounts time of the month, a mountain of receipts and invoices to do along with updating weekly accounts. The joys of being self employed !! Sitting at the dinning room table all day working through a mountain of paperwork looking at the garden wishing I was doing something else....   So when I got to 4pm I decided to stop and treat myself to an hour of train testing, which developed into a bit of filling and sanding and then a bit of spraying   First up a

Some pictures from this weekend

Hello   Although I am not setting any world records for the speed of my modelling I like to think that slow and steady 'wins the race' (well thats what I keep saying to myself!). I got a few more things done this weekend, mainly some more scenics which I enjoy, I will let the pictures say the rest...           Missy

wheel cleaning...

has anyone found a more effective method to clean wheels other than picking the darn thing up, breaking loads of the tiny details off you spend ages adding, only to spend another half hour with 1000grit sandpaper and a 9v battery   there must be a better way?
