Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

wheel cleaning...

has anyone found a more effective method to clean wheels other than picking the darn thing up, breaking loads of the tiny details off you spend ages adding, only to spend another half hour with 1000grit sandpaper and a 9v battery   there must be a better way?

"Stanier Twins...or not?"

The above is my railroad Black Five, numbered 45249. I've bought - second hand - another Stanier Black Five to restore. Pic below shows the extent of the damage it had when it arrived at the works:       45455's smokebox was badly melted, with the chimney at an odd angle, and the smoke gen popping through. It also had (not clear in this photo) damage to the left hand side valve gear.   After removal of the smoke generator, and the damaged chimney, and rebuilding the smokebox to some exte

London Brick company j94 Austerity saddle tank

this is a re-painted Hornby j94 saddle tank 0-6-0 loco. ive always had an interest in the London brick company as memebers of my family have worked for it, or hanson, for well over 100 years. from my great grandfather a gaurd on the fletton brick trains, my grandfather a mechanic in the LBC garages to my dad whos a fitter. the LBC had a fleet of bogie wagons to transport brick around the country, narrow gauge lines to transport clay to the kilns and hundreds of company owned lorrys.   the in

One down, one to go ....

Managed to get the left hand side rods soldered up last night     and here's a shot showing how they are articulated     The photos are very cruel in showing up the joins etc. They don't look this bad in real life. I will put some more work in with the files and 1000 grit before they are finished though!   I've also fitted the motor/gearbox to the chassis. There is a problem here because as designed there is no side play in the Comet gearbox or drive extender. Result is that as it st

Saltney, A local shop for local people!

Another loco has now joined the fleet in the form of an LMS compound 4-4-0. Steve is in the process of altering this chap from right to lefthand drive and has already moved the reversing rod and vac ejector. In the fullness of time this will eventually have coal rails fitted and be re-painted in BR lined black to represent one of the 6 or so that were shedded at Chester in the `50s.       On a more modern note, 58047 has emerged from hibernation to have a blast round with the MGR rake.

Colas class 47s part 2

Hello - This afternoon I done a little bit more to the second of the pair of Rail Express Colas class 47s '727 "Rebecca"   Ive finished adding all the standard vitrains 'bits' - the handrails , bogie guard irons and bufferbeam steps , areals and lamp irons. Vitrains have also noted the little steps at the bottom of the cabfront are painted yellow on these particular locos - and so have supplied the separate metal steps painted yellow - on other models they come painted black - nice littl

Class 50 Detailing

Finally made a start on detailing up my first Class 50, something of a test bed to decide what exactly I am going to do to the rest of them in the future.   So far:   Roof grill, replaced the Hornby grill with the Shawplan etch. Didnt get on too well with the etched baseplate and ended up scratch building my own. followed by fitting the etched fan.   Moving to the exhaust, I removed the Hornby detail first carving off the worst of it with a scalpel then tidying up with wet and dry glued

The application of decals

An order to Modelmaster produced suitable transfers for the 16t minerals I've built up over the last few months. The plaintive requests on their website asking for people not to bother ringing them to chase order were unnecessary as delivery was 4 days!   The ease of not having to put every b£$"d% number on individually is certainly a major advantage if you are like me and don't really mind if the number isn't exactly correct. I had no problems getting them to float to the position I needed an

tidy and colour

Had an unexpected hour in the shed this afternoon, in the main I did some sanding, filling and tidying of what has already been done. Added the lights on the bottom of the cab front. I then decided a quick coat of primer would help make the bits that need filling stand out, it did !!! I did manage to get these 4 pictures without showing two many marks that need further sanding and filling...           John

37403 Part 4 - job done.

Goodmorning I had a nie day out to DEMU showcase Yesterday - and got 37403 done just in time - It spent the day on the DEMU class 37 display - and the fuel tanks didnt fall off once! - theyre just a push fit at the moment - they fell off once it got back home   I found some numbers for the '403' on the noses , after carefully cheking all my transfers I used some RES numbers - the font isn't quite right but they look a far match for the size. The last jobs were to paint the handrails whit

Baseboard gets a lick o' paint

Work on the Harpers Road baseboard continues apace. I'm quite into it now and feel motivated after successfully overcoming the first hurdle of building a decent baseboard.   Yesterday I set to work by filling the screw heads, sanding and applying a coat of Japlac Primer & Undercoat in Off-White:       Today I managed to do both coats of Rustins Matt Black:         Not quite sure what I should next? Probably using more plywood to create the foundation of the dividing walls be

Mk1 GUV

I've started work on another vehicle for the parcels train, a MK1 GUV. So far the B4 bogies have been replaced by Mk1 type. These are Bill Bedford etchings with the sides off Bachmann Mk1 bogies (suitable thinned down). The Bachmann bogies came from Kernow Models last week and at £3.50 for a pair are actually cheaper than some less detailed white metal castings.   The original 'Rail Express Systems' livery came off easily with model strip and will be replaced with plain BR maroon (and lots of

Motley crew

After a tough spell at work it's been great to just run some stock back and forth today - no rules, no schedules, anything goes. Fortunately, GWR trains at the turn of the century lend themselves pretty well to that state of mind. A variety of stock, styles and liveries could be seen mixed together in the same train. Who said Great Western trains were all the same! Here are some examples as seen on Farthing.     Above we see the Westbury stopping train with a motley assembly

'Matford', Exeter - a P4 layout set in the final weeks before the demise of Wessex Trains

New backscene will be needed. Much 'squaring up' and 'bedding-in' to do. It was all thrown back together in a hurry for the show. The photos were taken by David Brandreth of the Scalefour Society at the 2010 Exeter show a few weeks ago.   A couple of general views of layout from buffer stops, looking towards fiddle yard (aka Exeter City Basin Jct):   View of the station area, with Class 170 and 159 in evidence, clearly SWT are holding sway at the moment! The Class 170s were seen at St

small update on progress of the layout.

Ok so time for an update not much has gone on with the layout in actual building terms from what has been reported before but I've made a decision to change the layout adding a different dimension to the layout.   The idea is to make the 2 freight lines lower than the rest of the lines and give it a different feel. I'm going to use 10mm foam board to raise the other lines up.   I've done a rough drawing of it using the standard windows paint program but you'll get the idea of what I'm trying

coombe junction - 37142...Part II...

Update - My wife has gone out tonight, the kids are in bed, so a perfect night to sneak in a bit of modelling, right ?...wrong ...seem to have lost the mojo tonight...so have thrown the towel in early rather than risk topping up the swear box.   A bit more progress on 37142 though - need to buy some more micro drill bits tomorrow to do the handrails on the nose, however I did put some orange and red paint on the pipes/hoses and will tidy up edges tomorrow with a scalpel - Note to self...next

A little grey box of tricks

A few spare hours has seen the equipment cabin which goes with the GSM mast finished bar a coat of paint. It's based on the type seen most commonly around the network. Next step is to make up the concrete base for it, install it on the board and surround it with security fencing:       Tom.

A Fairlie big problem - can anyone help please?!

I've been tinkering with the body of my Double Fairlie (Backwoods 009 kit) and have come up against a bit of a problem regarding the motor and it's mounting.   Fitting it is no problem, but it can only be done once the motor mount assembly is fitted to the body, and needs to be done before the cab and second pair of tanks are fitted. The problem this poses is thus; once the motor is fitted I will be unable to wash the flux off and subsequent building stages, of which there are many as this wou
