Today has seen some more fiddly bits.. Ill let the pictures do the talking but things to look for, door grab handles, end details, buffers, battery box.
Favourite pic of the day

Today has been one of those Saturdays when I hoped to get a decent bit of modelling time but didn't.
In the 20 mins I did escape to the shed I decided a coat of primer was in order. I find it helps to find what needs attention.

The best bit of any model is adding the details , well its the bit I like best anyway.
Last night I added the starts of the hinges, today they have been shaped a bit and some notches filed in to make them a little more hinge like.
I have also made some door handles that need a little more shaping, and the door stops.
Finally I have bent up some welding wire to make the grab handles

From experience I have realised when scratch building its always a good idea to have frequent test runs, just in case you get something really wrong that renders the model inoperable. So last night after adding the thin skin top walls to the second side and also altering the bogie positions inwards to suit the underfloor framing a test was in order. I am pleased to report it ran first time no problems.

Both sides now have complete sides, only one side hase the top thin cladding though. I needed a break from cutting windows so I have started on the underside trusses.

Today's update is a double day effort as I didn't post yesterday.
On the one side that had been seen previously I have now added the second skin made from 20 thou (0.5mm) plastic. In this' the window aperture's are 1mm smaller all round and have radius corners.
On the other side I have started the thicker first layer of side panels.
I have also fitted the seat backs and bases, which pointing man seems to find quite interesting.
This last picture shows the w
This afternoon I got home earlier than planned so i used the time to block up and sand the roof section with some Balsa wood
This method was a lot quicker than the one I used to make the loco roof !!!

I have to confess to being a plasticard-aholic, I have been routing in the scarp box for bits to finish of the shape on the first side (found enough !)
Tonight's pics include an end shot to help you decide if I have got the profile right.
Two reasons I have made the side up in sections,
1) they are easier to handle
2) I wanted to get the doors to look like they are separate.
Finally a potential caption competition ??

I was approached a couple of weeks ago to see if I was interested in parting with "Mossley Terrace" a small pass through layout/diorama that I built over the winter before last.
With changing circumstances I cant imagine me taking it to any more exhibitions and it has been stored in the shed since its last outing to Crewe in January. So I decided the space and a bit of cash were more use.
By way of a farewell I got it out tonight, gave it a dusting ready for an impending hand over and to
I've run out of plastic card for the time being, but tonight was quite fruitful. One side is starting to look something like.
But pointing man is complaining he cant get out .. no handles !

Okay so I have realised I am not very good at this sitting and thinking about things lark, so decided just to get on with my next project despite all my concerns about whether it would work !!!
After checking stock levels I found I had 5 sheets of 60 thou plasticard so that seemed a good place to start. When the rest of the country sat down to watch England get beat this afternoon I set to work in the shed. and here is how I got on.
I couldn't work out how to support the shape of the si
I have been quietly been experimenting with the idea of a mrk 1 coach to keep the rat company, it would be BIG ! It has been some what problamatic on several fronts. Not least that because when the track was laid I was only running very short 4 wheel wagons, which didnt need long sweeping curves and lengths of level rail !
I started by making a test rig, ( a piece of 2" x 3" and 2 bogies ! )
The timber is not the correct overall length but was cut big enough to carry bogie cent
I have really not been in the modelling mood this week due to various happenings taking place in real life. But tonight I ventured down the shed for an hour while everyone else was out. The 25 is getting to a point that time spent yields small perhaps even unnoticeable results.
Anyway I have cut and fitted the remaining glazing so all windows are now done, there will be a little tidying to do round the frames, but that is best when the solvent weld has hardened. I also added the steps under
These are never going t look right behind my nice new Rat..
But they do have a nice sturdy frame underneath.
The steps would need chopping out and the buffers raising.. But I'm sure they could form the basis of a more "respectable" model.

They scale at 260" across the current buffer lugs... Any ideas for an appropriate size wagon ?
Been on a roll this afternoon, plus the sun was out
Painted in the sun
back in the shed for some handrails and weathering, sorry if you like clean diesels, I like mine Used
back in the sun for some better pictures
I guess cab and buffer beam details are next, then when the paint it a bit tougher glazing and other small details.
John
More details tonight, I have not rubbed them down and primed them yet so please forgive the rough edges..
Pointing man seems to be putting on some pressure for me to do the cab interior !
John
The best part of any model is when the main shell is shaped and its time to start adding details.
Having found a suitable prototype here in a nice BLUE colour, its time to start adding details.

I have been trying to work out how to make the circular fan cover for the roof,
In the end I couldn't come up with a clever plan so had to resort to cutting and filling it out of a piece of 60thou plasticard. I marked it out, drilled holes, then opened them up with a square needle file an hour of filling later I had a grid pattern and I just needed to cut off the outside to make it circular. Then glue on. I must be mad ??
I did have plans to cut out under the grill but decide
Its been a frustrating day ! Its accounts time of the month, a mountain of receipts and invoices to do along with updating weekly accounts. The joys of being self employed !! Sitting at the dinning room table all day working through a mountain of paperwork looking at the garden wishing I was doing something else....
So when I got to 4pm I decided to stop and treat myself to an hour of train testing, which developed into a bit of filling and sanding and then a bit of spraying
First up a
Had an unexpected hour in the shed this afternoon, in the main I did some sanding, filling and tidying of what has already been done. Added the lights on the bottom of the cab front. I then decided a quick coat of primer would help make the bits that need filling stand out, it did !!! I did manage to get these 4 pictures without showing two many marks that need further sanding and filling...
John
I couldn't put them off any longer, those tricky front corners of the roof !! the day started with last nights filler...
and then progressed with thanks to sandpaper
