  1. Indeed ! ................ it was the slowing down / speeding up aspect of things I was trying to compare rather than the physical orientation.
  2. ... and in Scotland you could mix in Mk1s, LMS stock of various vintages and pre-groping stock from native railways ..... yes even a few GER coaches found their way up there.
  3. Interestingly, that's the opposite of the principle on the UndergrounD where stations are often on a hump - the entry rise being used to slow arriving trains and the dip from the platform end used to accelerate away.
  4. I suspect British weaving looms - back in the days they were available - would have been supplied as kits of parts and built on site ................... inserting fully assembled looms into each floor of a dark satanic mill would have been no easy task.
  5. Erm ..... how shallow was the water pipe ..... or how deep were they tamping ???!!??
  6. T'other way round : BR ( LNWR ) tracks formerly used by the UndergrounD ...... Harrow to Watford.
  7. No necessarily heavily used sections but those remote from the power feed ...... my local - Hayes - line still retains a fourth rail for much of its length : a lighter section than the standard juice rail so my guess is that it's original LSWR third rail !!?!
  8. Hmmmm .......... Mk1 BFKs weren't particularly numerous at the best of times but the 1982 Platform 5 only list ONE allocated to the WR ..... so, unless it's been 'borrowed', that's W14022 on the tail.
  9. Unfortunately never enforced ............... bent bananas are such a pain to pack in your shopping !
  10. Southern Style states "The green markings on banana vans, if they were indeed intended to signify the vans' contents in a discreet manner, also presumably indicate that the banana traffic did continue on however reduced a scale." .................................. the only plausible alternative I can think of is that the vans would be more readily identifiable whenever banana traffic resumed - nobody knew the war still had another four years to run.
  11. No - ALL Q1s started out black ........... but didn't stay clean for very long.
  12. Indeed - very different ...... off the top of my head I can't think of any branch lines surviving into the'80s with loco- hauled stock of any sort.
  13. There are people out there who will happily insist that the Midland & LMS NEVER used maroon .... but Crimson Lake ................ which looks sort of maroon-ish to the rest of us ! 🙄
  14. Southampton Docks and Nine Elms, via main line (market goods, fruit or potato train) : single lamp/disc over left hand buffer ( as seen head-on ) Waterloo or Nine Elms and Southampton Docks via East Putney : lamp/disc over left hand buffer ( as seen head-on ) and lamp/disc at centre of buffer beam ..... simple ! ( from 1945 Ian Allan ABC )
  15. Indeed - a 'typical' branchline is probably one that's totally different in character to its neighbours ............. Mk1 stock - where used - would generally be mixed in with earlier vehicles unless operated in fixed sets ( Southern lines to Exmouth etc. f'rinstance ).
  16. SSSSHHHHHHHHH ! - there might be some Russkies tapping-in to RMweb !
  17. Ah - yes ........... Swindon being different as usual ! 3/1/87
  18. This lot probably : - https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service-disruptions/west-ealing-20240405
  19. How was the original plate mounted on 7006 ? ............ this one would not mount on a curved door without some sort of spacers.
  20. What we think of as LSWR 'classes' weren't described as such until the Southern tried to tidy things up - fifteen years or more after the K14s were built ........ even a hundred years later, I'd hesitate to call that 'soon'.
  21. "... three wheels of the locomotive came off the tracks" ........... intriguing ! - or do they mean three axles ? ( a journalist wouldn't know the difference )
  22. What better place to test your landslip restoration & future-proofing techniques !!?!
  23. Am I imagining things or is that first coach from the XP64 train ? ...... if so, someone might know where it might've ben seen.
