Thanks for that update. As it happens, I cut mine up a couple of days ago and went to glue the parts together yesterday when I also found I'd cut the original too short and had to cut another wagon up to get the correct length... 1
Popular Post johndon
This week's update sees us at the Stella Gill end of the layout. First up, looking over the incoming and outgoing lines for Stella Gill yard, we have Q6 63459 at the head of the oil train from Jarrow destined for Consett. At the rear of the train is another Q6 acting as banker which would have joined the train prior to reaching South Pelaw. These trains, by then hauled by a Class 37 but still occasionally banked, ran right up to the closure of the steelworks. Both empty and full coal hoppers await their onward journey in the yard. Next up a view straight towards Stella Gill yard. Q6 63453 sits at the front of a train of empty hoppers with more hoppers and, just visible, some benzine tanks in the yard. The is the part of the layout that, necessarily, departs from reality. Beyond the bridge, the 6 lines split into the huge Stella Gill yard (almost 40 sidings) that handled coal from the local collieries. On the layout, the curve to the right heads for the fiddle yard. The photo below shows what the view is like today. This photo was taken in the same direction as the photo above but from the other side of the bridge where the land is now at the same level as the bridge - hard to believe that there was a yard here with lines going in all directions to the local collieries: And, finally for today, N9 69429 simmers in '3 incoming' road opposite the NCB Shed. The line to Consett can be seen climbing away behind the water tower and turntable. Popular Post johndon
Today's photos cover some of the architectural sights at the junction... First up, the bridge at the Washington end of the junction which, as it spanned two sets of lines was both bridge 2 (the left hand side where the tracks went to Ouston Junction) and bridge 27 (the right hand side which went to Washington). The bridge survived until just a few years ago when it was completely demolished with no trace left in just 2 days. Due to the very distinctive nature of the stone work (particularly on the face of the piers) no commercial stone sheets were of any use so each stone is hand carved. Next up, the first set of Railway Cottages, completely scratch built: and the other row of Railway Cottages on the opposite of Pelton Lane, again scratch built.. Both rows of houses lasted until late 1966/early 1967 and, as with the bridge, no trace of them remains today. The following two photos were taken from Pelton Lane which separated the rows of cottages and, in both cases are looking at where the ends of the houses once stood: Model photos by Tony Lambert. Popular Post johndon
Back at the junction this week, we start with 9F 92062 crossing over to couple up to the rear of a waiting iron ore train which it will bank as far as South Medomsley, a couple of miles short of Consett steelworks. The higher level tracks in the foreground lead to South Pelaw Colliery which closed in 1964. The bridge in the foreground is still there today and, although the deck has been modified since, the stone parapets remain the same. V3 67690 heads towards Ouston Junction with a passenger train from Consett to Newcastle. The passenger service on the line ended on 23 May 1955 due mainly to competition from bus services which offered a faster and more regular service to the 'Toon'. Q6 63443 with another member of the class leading head up to Consett with a train of oil tanks from Jarrow. Empty steel wagons wait in one of the incoming roads for Stella Gill yard, a fairly common practice. The train would reverse out over the junction and then head up to Consett. johndon
One of the team, Richard, has become something of a 'wagon addict' over lockdown and his output has been somewhat prodigious. This short video shows just some of his efforts over the last 12 months being hauled by his Q6, a Dave Alexander kit with a Pete Stanger chassis on a running in turn prior to weathering: 6
RichardClayton
Thanks John — another great looking vid! The Q6 will acquire coal, crew, lamps, and a layer of grot in due course, but it was nice to give it an opportunity to stretch its legs on Saturday, and pleasing to see the fruit of lockdown(s) trundling round South Pelaw without too many mishaps — once I had fixed a couple of errant back to backs.
