Interesting photos of Canning Street showing the decline in the area; It looks like it was quite a busy junction in it's day.

 

The area outside the box was effectively a double track double slip, so double track crossing double track on the flat but with the ability to "slip" to the other side (if that makes sense!) - not all controlled by the box, some where hand points - the box was only small (18 levers) and a wave of the hand / flag was used for a lot of moves - 715 just about illustrates the layout.

Dave, photo 000721, the Ground Frame was provided in the summer of 1976 when the lines between Canning St North and Green Lane Jcn were changed from Permissive block to Absolute block.

Davies' scrap yard had been without a rail service for about 18 months while the connection to Smiths was installed; needless to say Davies didn't really use rail much after the connection was installed!

 

Prior to the line to Smiths being put in, traffic for Davies' yard was propelled across "The Front" towards Morpeth Dock, reversed and pulled towards a set of buffers (near the later site of the GF) at Brook St, reversed again and propelled again into the yard.

The new connection to Smiths cut across this arrangement and after the line to Shore Road was laid it took about 18 months to provide the GF at Brook St.

That last pic, it looks more like coming off the dovey estuary towards dovey jn (possibly the signal box in the distance?)

 

 

Thanks Jim - my original notes just have the date and I tried to make a guess as to where it might be, now you've mentioned it I can see the box.

Base of Down Main starter - lattice post. Down passenger loop starter just visible at Abergele

The reason for this shot is there is an LMS standard which can be used to determine/estimate the height of lattice post signals - see LMS signals.

I think Smiths were a stockholder - but not 100% certain. I saw wagons in there frequently but the photos show the only time I even saw a loco and fortunately I was in Canning Street North when it happened, and with a camera.

They were steel stockholders; they had an office in Gateshead as well, which makes me think they might have specialised in supplying shipyards. Their Gateshead office was in a block I was responsible for in the early 1980s; there was a big framed view of the junction, with some air-braked steel wagons, in their reception area.

DAS000746- definitely cement in Presflos. Decades earlier, this type had also carried salt (for ICI) , slate dust and Fullers' Earth, but all such traffic had ceased by TOPS days.

DAS000747; LPG tanks (no ladders, and sliding cover on side). Empty train, which could be from a number of locations, including the BSC lime works at Shap.

I like the class 128 DPU poking it's face out from under the bridge in DAS000757 - but what is that 3-colour splodge near the Signal Box?
