Great photos of Reading Dave, thanks for posting, I was a CO2 at Reading Booking Office in 1981, although on the 25th March I was actually relieving at Twyford on an 0557-1357 shift, which IIRC meant travelling to work on the 0445 DMU from Oxford, where I lived. The previous day I had also been at Twyford but on the 1322-2127 shift, so quite a short turnround !

866..lovely signal and some nicely weathered wagons! Does anyone know what they were carrying Please?

Baz

Cement. Earles Sidings being the junction/exchange sidings for the short branch to Hope cement works, APCM/Blue Circle at the time.

The wagons are the notorious Cemflo type, later PCV -

So about 12 years after I last covered the back part of a late turn in Twyford Booking Office. (and I'd probably opened Henley booking ogffice just before 06.00 that morning and done my normal job in Western Tower between the two   - money, money, money ;) )

The joys of the railway before the days of the PC/H&S etc Police.

Back in the 1970s the Holy Grail of our office was to get in a 'Double Clock Face' Sunday, following a 12-hour Saturday. If you managed it you could make a week's money in a weekend.

Thanks for posting the 'Woodhead' and Sheffield Vic shots Dave, brings back memories o' mi youf.

I can (just) remember travelling from Sheffield Vic to Manchester via Woodhead on a scheduled passenger service, didn't do the journey often and the one that sticks in my mind was travelling in (what I now know to be) an ex LNER Thompson coach. It was the white oval toilet window that looked so 'different' to a then 5 year old.

Keep 'em coming :)

76s. Managed to see them all (that were surviving) in one day on one occasion, probably 1980 as I passed my driving test in late 1979 and spent most weekends shed bashing across north and central England.

Possible by doing Rotherwood, Wath, Guide Bridge and Reddish on a Sunday. And a quick check in at Tinsley as there were sometimes a couple there.

Cheers,

Mick

Awesome Dave, I don't know how you can be bothered taking pictures of today's sterile railway after recording such fantastic scenes like today's selection

Still enjoy it as much as I did then, probably an OCD thing !

It must be mate, I enjoy my job but have very little interest in the modern railway and only really take photos with a few exceptions if its in a BR livery.

I work rest days to fund my model railway and automotive habits!

Despite being a Durham born lad I never, ever traveled on a train pulled by the DLI.

Seem to remember there used to be quite a few  London- York- London trains which terminated in York, all Deltic hauled after they had been taken off other trains by more HSTs being available.

Another set of cracking photos Dave. Particularly like '910' at Barton Moss Jcn with the Bobbies motorbike next to the line - something you don't see on model layouts (yet?). Re '914', Irwell Bridge Sidings GF, interesting "ground" signal. Don't think I've seen one quite like this before, was this a particular LM design?
