That signal also has a 'sighting board' - which (ironically) is almost invisible against the grey-white sky. Do you know why it was provided, Dave?

Er, to improve the sighting of the signal? Apologies for the facetious comment Andy, but I know what you mean. From close up, as in the photo, it doesn't seem to be improving the sighting much but further back when the signal first comes into view of the driver I'm assuming the perspective is quite different and the signal might well be "lost" in the background clutter.

Not 100% but there will have been some sighting difficulties, although the board itself may blend into the sky, the arm will be visible. I'm guessing there will be/was trees or something in the drivers sight line.

Hi Dave,

Yet another set of fantastic photos depicting times gone by. Again, thanks for taking the time to share with the rest of us. Particularly like DAS000832, you've managed to cram into one single shot the signal, wire run, point rodding with compensation crank, Location boxes, telegraph pole complete with all wires and pots, 3/4 mile post and even a rail expansion joint - obviously the composition you were aiming for!

what is the track on the left and the sidings in the distance for?

They were known as the Quay Sidings, around the time of the photo it was used for storing coaches prior to them forming services, mostly at the station end (which is behind me as I take the photo). There are some wagons visible down at the actual Quay - although it wasn't in use for goods by that stage.

Many memories of that time...just before we moved to Didcot I travelled across from Stevenage for a job interview..my first contact with a hoover powered train. Later I think I saw all of them including the "green one"

Ta for the memory jogger Dave.

Ah Reading. Went there in about 1980 and asked at the platform end if there was anything interesting about. There was much excitement that a 40 was near.

Not much excitement from me as I simply remarked "seen them all, common up my way"

The southern reply was " I guess you need lots of 47s then?" With a smug tone

"No. Only two......" silenced them.

They were LA and CF locos though.....

Cheers.

Mick

According to the 2013 edition of Quail, the main track was still in place; looking at the track plan, there is a loop about half-way down, which presumably could be used to allow locos on trains from Llandudno Jct yard to run round.

I think that was the case

Quay sidings are still open for traffic, we (NR) got them back off EWS (around 2015) as a jungle as they never looked after them. Since 2004ish we’ve only been allowed to use them if it was EWS loco/train, this was due to a ATW class 175 came off while been stabled over night, questions were then asked why it was there as the yard ‘belonged’ to EWS. Ironically I managed to stable a class 90 in there after it as left on the train from Crewe while on drags, it had EWS written on it!!!

We can only use 462pts Conwy end to gain access and there’s around 300 yards of the line down towards Conwy we can use before the temporary stop block.

The other set of points 457pts are in working order and maintained as is LJ69 in the yard but it’s all overgrown, there has been some freight interest of late in the yard but this never seems to come to anything unfortunately.

DAS000842 - with Mk3s in the train, it's probably the "generator set" of HST trailers with generator van 975325(ish?). The named loco number looks like 47077 North Star (non-ETH).

Thnaks for that - sometimes my typing gets out of sync with the photos.

Nice to see Reading again before it was ruined.

DAS000836. The loco is sitting on the run round loop between platforms 8 and 9 and will be waiting to take over another cross country service when it reverses. It may even have come off the train behind.

Some lovely pictures of my home town station there. In DAS000844, that’s not a parcels train. The first vehicle is clearly a BG but after that it's all air-con Mk2s. That platform (5) wasn’t used for parcels or mail traffic during the day but one or two did at night, notably the up Penzance TPO.

DAS000850 - the 33's train is probably a cross-country service. The 33 is likely to have brought the train from Poole/Bournemouth, and it would probably be replaced by a 47 on the other end for its journey north via Oxford to Birmingham etc.

Clearly too much time spent at Reading in my youth... Sorry Dave but a few other descriptions need to be corrected in the 2nd Reading batch.

DAS000849 - The loco is 50044 Exeter. You have correctly labelled DAS000851 as 50005 Collingwood.

DAS000854 - The Yeoman hoppers would suggest the 37s' stone train is running from Merehead to Acton Yard.

DAS000855 - The train is at platform 8 and heading west (down not up working).

The last coach is still crossing over the down relief so definitely coming in from the south / Reading West.

Some lovely shots of the Reading I remember when I were a lad. The photo of 50048 is interesting in that the loco's naming ceremony took place just a few yards to the right of where you photographed it; in the old platform 7 (Oxford bay).

No need for "Sorry" - you are doing exactly what I want - helping correct / identify etc. the captions and/or workings.

From your info on 855 I can now say what it's working was -1C40, Padd - Hereford, it's one of the last photos of the day and railgenarchive has it working that train on the day I photographed it
