Hi Dave,

 

I presume the rusty rails in the foreground are the result of the "mods" to the panel diagram. How long was it before the physical track was actually remodelled?

The rusty tracks are the direct connection from Downhill to the Wappings which weren't used very often, they were still available for use with signalling. They are visible along the front of the red box, indicating the PSB position,  on the larger panel pictures - eq 219.

31410 passes Norwich Thorpe Junction as it approaches Norwich Thorpe, journeys end, from Cromer / Sheringham / Great Yarmouth or Lowestoft

I'd expect Gt Yarmouth, as it's Mk2 aircons - at that period, at least the summer Saturday (if not other) Liverpool St-Norwich trains were extended to Yarmouth. Don't think they extended them anywhere else, or indeed ran any loco-hauled to the other destinations mentioned.

A couple of years later, we spent a great Saturday on that bridge at Thorpe, and at Whittingham Jn, Trowse and Wymondham, but I've lost the negs. Still remember the booking office staff being confused by my attempted pronunciation of the latter.

I know absolutely nothing about the area at all I'm afraid so please forgive a basic and simple question.

 

There has obviously been rationalisation of routes at Wavertree Junction but I was intrigued by the up and down "Circular Goods" lines which had been cut. I have never seen that term before. What were they?

 

Above that is labelled "Through Siding" - was that previously a loop on the down circular?

The circular goods lines at Edge Hill allowed trains from the Speke direction to get over to the other side of the railway without a flat crossing / junction, this allowed traffic heading for the docks to avoid conflicts with the main lines, the converse was also true. By the date of the photos, the circular goods had closed as the few remaining trains could easily be crossed over without causing major problems. Photo 219, bottom right, the track in outline and the tracks to the left of this is roughly where the circular used to join, as can be seen it was possible to get over to it via normal junctions. Nowadays it's not

Thanks very much for that. I had not realised the system was so extensive at that point but, as I said, I am not familiar with the area.

A couple from a visit to Sandycroft signalbox, 08/08/1981 was a good day for boxes, me and a couple of mates visited quite a few ! - and it's nearly 37 years ago <jeez>

Mollington - Birkenhead Joint between Hooton and Chester.

 

The box in the photo was opened ca 1943 to replace an older box which was opposite but nearer to Hooton. There used to be oil sidings which were in use until the early 1970s (I think), by the time of the photos the box had been abolished and stripped. I own a distant repeater from here, a nice LMS brass one. It had 25 levers and controlled the siding connections and also an IB (intermediate block) in each direction, these were installed in the 1930s and replaced two small break-section boxes, Dunkirk and Upton. When I knew it Upton IB had been removed but Dunkirk was still in use, took a bit of getting used to working it, when a train was sectioned from Chester No.5, you (assuming nothing had passed of course) pulled off on the down, and then offered the train to Hooton, when Hooton accepted it, you pulled off the IB, replacing the signals as the train progressed, when it passed the IB a buzzer sounded to remind you. It was abolished in November 1980 and stood for abut 10 years before electrification works meant it had to be demolished so a sub-station could be built.

 

For those who remember the Exactoscale (I think) textured building kits, basically thin card with a textured finish, my photographs of this box (when it was open of course) were used to produce an LMS ARP box kit.

Remove green spectacle lens, remove cable. Fixed!

 

Usually the green was provided to make it look the same as a working distant. never quite understood that logic, the driver knows it's (in this case) Hooton's distant, he knows where the next stop signal is, the distant is a visual reminder, he doesn't really need the green to try and trick him !

The step end view, of Widnes No.7, confirms what I had already sort of worked out - namely that the external landing lav was only singularly clad in tongue & groove boarding. I can also see valuable construction detail and the colours used too! Wonderful stuff.

 

The last two photos of the box's interior (through the windows) is even more useful as I am currently putting a lot of thought into this area of my box build.

 

I'm sure "Tricky" will also find these photos valuable too.

Yep, I'm loving it too! Ellesmere Port looks an interesting prototype, with a brick base, although I would prefer to represent one with recessed brickwork panels.
