Lovely dock layout.   Is that the Hornby PLA 74 loco?   If so, see Steve's workbench thread for repainting wagons to PLA livery.

Hi Coline33, thank you! No, the Hattons Barclay tank is in the Burnley Corporation Gas Department livery. I live near Burnley and plan to build a gasworks layout at some point, but it does look very much at home on this one! I need to put my thinking cap on and come up with a name for the docks to tie in with the initials B.C.G.D.!!

Suitably inspired I painted my bridge and made some foam piers for it to sit on.
Even courses lightly drawn on by piling up 9mm ply offcuts

The height gauge for the future installation, a piece of 2x1 and an offcut of ply!

and happy with that, just need to stipple plaster onto the piers to seal them and paint them too.

There being a great deal of not travelling today has meant I have only managed a bit more, sanding the boiler, fitting a few small bits and starting to assemble the static motion. I have discovered I have a pasty tooth!

I've spent the last 5 weeks (where has it all gone!!!) rebuilding a Barclay 0-6-0 industrial diesel (a Wychbury Works original kit) that was first built by Ruston of this parish over 30 years ago.(ie - before he transmogrified into the loco builder par excellence that we all know today).  There is a thread about the build in the Standard Gauge Industrial Railway section but here is a photo of the 'finished' item which still needs weathering.

I've been building a small extension to my layout.

I've extend the board out by about 6 inches and have expanded the Metcalfe Factory that was already there by using the Metcalfe Goods Shed and the Factory Entrance and Boilerhouse Kits. Currently waiting for ballast to dry before I start weathering the track and buildings.

I've taken the plunge and put my boards back down.

I'm definitely feeling smug, though. I've built a relay daughter board from components the Tim sent to me. No instructions, just a schematic that isn't quite correct. Connected the CANMIO on the right of the photo. The main purpose of this is to drive servos to change points, the servo wires can be seen disappearing off to the right. The board to the left is the daughter board with 2 relays fitted to do the frog switching (the relays are the white things), and they are connected together via a ribbon cable  which I have never dealt with before. Anyway, the relay switching is triggered by the the servo reaching the mid point in it's travel from normal to reverse.

The whole lot worked first time. Woo hoo!

Progress on the little engine shed on my 'lockdown layout'.

Since it was last seen, the height has been reduced by 3mm and the width increased by 4mm. It is also sited on a new 'concrete' hardstanding (actually made from balsa, coated with pollyfilla), which helps with the height. The hardstanding still requires extra texturing, as well as the shed needing to be bedded in. The door to the lean-to needs a step.

It is built from 20 thou plasticard, with the roof panels made from tin foil embossed by rolling a screwdriver handle. The main doors are made from the same 20 thou plasticard, with some Slaters planking plasticard mounted on the front. The framing on the doors is made from microstrip. The windows and lean-to door are from a Pikestuff kit.

The main body of the structure is painted with a blend of Railmatch Concrete and Falcon Grey. The main shed roof is meant to have been recently replaced, so hasn't rusted and deteriorated as much as the lean-to.

Still a few bits of detailing to do, but nearly there.

I ended up drawing and printing the motion as I didn't like the etched version. So I am busy sorting it out and making it fit. The green is a shaft across the chassis just ahead of the drive gear and there will be another shaft across the bottom of the motion plates with the reversing lever at the end of it, carried in the bearings in the background, where you can also see the driven pump. More tomorrow! Cheers Ian

Brilliant work, where I used to work we had one of the first rapid prototyping manufacturing facilities in Europe, the machines cost millions each but were fantastic at producing prototype parts........and scanning and printing scale models.......I had a 4mm FNA scanned and printed at 7mm scale long before there were any kits available, did you hear that Pete?

Anyhoo, point is they could print something like your valve gear but it would be a working set, they could print with minute clearances between components so a set like that would come out complete and moveable......alas I am now retired and my mate who ran the area is also retired.......bummer

I’d love to get into 3D printing but frankly not sure I have (actually I know I haven’t) the patience, not with the printing but the drawing.

Hi Boxbrownie, I remember seeing a stereolithography machine on Tomorrow's World TV about the same time as CDRoms started. Fascinated then. Saw some smaller scale bits about 30  years ago in use at BAe I think it was, and am amazed that I can now produce something similar on my desk. I started this because I couldn't get my lathe to produce the finesse of parts in brass etc that I had in my mind but found when I started drawing in 3D last March that I could actually produce something very close to that using a £200 resin printer! I have continued since and am now very happy to be able to produce the parts I always wanted to. I am 63, have used computers since about 1980 when I drew a simple ship by joining co-ordinates with lines, before mice! I am a tryer out of things so have played about with an awful lot of bits and bobs over the last 40 years of modelling but nothing has changed my modelling as much as the 3D CAD and the 3D printing. This is the second loco I have developed, the first being a Slaughter Goods, see assembly diagram, which several people are building at the moment. I will be doing more with the techniques as the months and years progress, I just find there are not enough hours in the day sometimes to do all I want to! https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/wmg/about/outreach/resources/fusion_tutorials are where I started with the Fusion360 software which is free for hobbyists. Why not give it a go? Just by way of explanation, in the diagram, the grey parts are 3D printed, red or white are etched and yellow is wire, etc. I should add that the RMWeb tutorials on how to draw domes/chimneys etc in Fusion360 by Quarryscapes helped enormously too,

Managed to get a bit of time to myself last night so spent a happy couple of hours putting together a Parkside Grampus kit.

The first part was happy, the last hour or so trying to attach the spring hangers was a bit fiddly!

How did you keep the roof laminations from warping? I tried something similar, but on a much smaller scale for a Micheline railcar and it warped horribly - I redid it carving and filing some balsa.

(I suspect it might be down to styrene thickness).

My SI project is progressing. There have been some setbacks (finding that some parts had not scaled in the expected way after a day of printing caused some grinding of teeth).

The first of the arches is now gluing and is just resting on the pillar ends (these are both the original ends as I have yet to design the middle one). These provide a good way of wedging the tube together. The loco that it placed on the main bridge section is a class 22 to give an idea of scale.

4th board (board no. 3) now with CANMIO fitted with main supply wiring done via a Cat 5 and separate 12V supply. Mounting holes drilled for the MIO daughter board. Sadly, I cannot program the MIO, the PIC needs to be re-blown.  I have 2 such boards, anyhoo, onward and upward.

I can now get on with bolting the next boards together with the alignment dowels set up, so that I can star tracklaying on the 5th board (board no. 4).

Spent the last week trying my first EM gauge conversion, it went ok, steep learning curve.I went 90% finished then realised i needed to go back 6 steps to get clearance correct. It has been enjoyable and lessons learnt, not finished yet.

I've started to scratchbuild a Bagnall 12-inch saddletank for OO, using a gearbox that I salvaged from the wreck of a Dapol L&Y pug/HL chassis kit that I was given last year. As soon as the tube for the boiler arrives in the post I'll get on and do some more.

Yes, I'd have been really proud if they had been actually grown.

They were made from balsa, bbq skewers, cocofibre liner and flock.

Details here and the next few posts if you are interested....
