Dapol West Country & Rebuilt West Country

A number did have those flat deflectors Biggin Hill for example http://www.flickr.com/photos/rgadsdon/6925017682/ I also have a video of it departing Waterloo and the rear view shows it to be very flat.

I am not saying the flat ones are wrong, I agree they were carried. I am simply offering my oppinion that slightly curvier deflectors seem more common than the flat ones. Personally I think the curvy ones look better but then maybe I just like curves. :D

Perhaps we should work on the basis of the locos Dapol are planning to produce.

Spirfire seems to have had curved deflectors. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2968416

Fighter Command also curved http://www.flickr.com/photos/stuart166axe/4158496817/

Watersmeet seems to have been flat http://www.flickr.com/photos/64518788@N05/7374116540/

I have not been able to find a picture of Okehapmton prior to rebuild.

Since there seems to have been variation in the design of smoke deflectors, maybe the best solution would be to pick one style and then choose the prototypes to model that carried that style.

What do you think Dave? Would this be a feasible solution to make sure that the models are accurate for the originals?

It's just occured to me looking at the picture of Watersmeet, and the one I linked of Biggin Hill, that both these flat deflector plates also have the horozontal brackets for fixing the large nameboards (Devon Belle?) to. The curved ones do not. Maybe on the smaller light pacifics they needed flat deflectors to attach those huge nameboards to?

edit: Also Lord Beaverbrook has flat defelctors and the same bracket for the nameboard http://www.flickr.com/photos/david_christie/6171260689/ as does Exmouth http://www.flickr.com/photos/razeldazel/8023880461/in/photostream/

Hi Dave,

Will I be able to run tender first on these West Countries, if so how does this affect the pipe work on the front buffer beam. I have studied your picture on post 64 from 21st January 2013.

It all looks as though the pipe work is an add on feature, If not a delicate one.

Regards,

Chris in Devon

Dave

I blame Dapol for making me change a future layout  project from building Swanage in N scale to now building a a bigger location with double track after you announced these locos. Swanage only needed a few locos, most of which i bought some time ago to run on a friends proposed N scale SR layout that hes never started.

Now I will be buying a lot more, especially these locos!!

(Ok, some of the blame must go to Bachamnn for also announcing the Bullied coaches and Mogul N)

Really looking forward to the release of these Bullied locos and glad to hear they will have the NEM pocket for fitting couplings so they can be double headed or used as banking locos.

Hi Chris,

The buffer beam pipework is an 'end user' addition from the accessory pack, so yes you can.

Cheers

Dave (in Wales) :locomotive:

Excellent, Great opportunities. Thanks Dave, Has the CADs been signed off yet?

Cheers.

Dear DapolDave,

I model Industrial steam in 'OO', please stop making me buy loads of 'N' main line locos and modern image units. My wallet now hates you :)

Yours,

Edge

Hi Dave,

These are fantastic, The rebuilt looks cool. The tender drive looks neat. Have they sent the CADs for the rebuilt 5500 gallon tenders?

Hi Ian,

You have already bought them...... I must be the xxxxxxxxx Farish ones which beside these will stand out like a sore thumb.

Looking forward to them, when they arrive.

I only have one Farish Bullied pacific. It needs the insulating motor bush to convert to DCC. I found this out just as Dapol announced these, so its gone back in its box!

Hi Ian,

don't forget the Mausell's are cutting metal at this moment, and they will have our flexible corridor connectors if you want to have them on too (they will be a pair in a box), and light bar ready.

cheers

Dave

Definitely not forgotten about the Mansells. As to how many I need depends on where I end up modelling but there will be a few sets of these on the proposed layout.

Wasn't there an issue with balance weights on the  driving wheels some while back? Shouldn't the rebuilds have them?

Yes, they should.

The rake of the firebox top looks spot on, but, the line of the wash-out plugs should also match. I.e run parallel with the top.

In fact this angle of the plugs is identical on both original and rebuilt locos, as it was the same boiler underneath.

Also, the handrail, alongside the firebox needs to curve down towards the cab, to match.

Regards.

Hi Dave

Can you confirm how the Maunsells will be marketed - in sets possibly, please? ;O)))

Thanks

Gerry

Hi Dave.

Both of these are now looking fantastic. looks like you've got the top of the firebox on the rebuilt spot on now although as mentioned above the washout plugs should follow the angle down towards the cab and the handrail should curve down starting between the 2nd & 3rd fixing from the cab.

Can't wait to see them 'in the plastic'!

Cheers,

Tom.

Hi Dave,

It's good to hear that the flexible corridor connections are back! It all went quiet after the class 156. Weren't they announced as an separate accessory pack to retrofit to older models? Any chance of that idea being resurrected?

Hi All,

Right guys! the trains are coming! http://Dapol.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=179_298_300_345

As it says..... Hopefully Q1 2014 and with the same time http://Dapol.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=179_298_300_342

Coaches to pull too!

I have some private owner wagons to pull as well, So many thanks to Dave and Joel.

I do appreciate the good news of possible launch dates, like most other modellers, the advance notice to the boss in-doors, to release the necessary funds or work more overtime?!?

Best news I've had since the sun stopped shining and the rains came.

Hi Simon,

For BB class http://www.modelmasterdecals.com/SR_BofB_N_Blue.php

For WC class  http://www.modelmasterdecals.com/SR_WC_N.php

For Headboards http://www.cgwnameplates.co.uk/page14a.htm

I have not tried these so I don't know the quality and paint to the new models.

Regards,

Chris

So the Perfect Storm arrives in 1Q 2014:

Dapol: West Country/Battle of Britain Pacifics and Maunsell coaches

Farish: Bulleid coaches - and possibly either/both of Merchant Navy Pacifics and 'N' 2-6-0

Hornby/Arnold: Brighton Belle

My wallet is going to be smoking from all the card usage...
