quite expensive for me but the going rate for that sort of thing. 3.2M 'effective' pixels in full compressed mode and took 2 or 3 seconds to process the shot, 3x optical and 10x digital zoom. To be honest, I just kept it in the 1.6M pixel mode which gave pics that were 2048 x 1600 (?) pixels. This also meant it didn't totally gorge the 2 x AA batteries.

I still have it and I still have many pics taken with it - they are so sharp and clear even when enlarged many times on screen or print.

in recent years, cameras then phone cameras. were/are pushed with how many megapixels they have (like how many bhp your car has). my phone is something like 8M pixels, fine - however as soon as you zoom in at all, the image breaks up and pixellates i.e. it's a crap lens or sensor which just does not capture the detail. 

Sorry for the diversion Dave, just made me think back to when digital was becoming popular (and affordable) how expensive it seemed! Now you can buy pocket cameras with 20M pixels, Bluetooth, GPS, HD, effects, and on and on - but if the glass and sensor aren't up to it then the pics will suffer.

Just like the old days really - crap lens and crap film gave crap results!

 

 

Still off topic

After using a Canon A1 with Canon lenses for some years my first digital (2004) was a Sony DSC-V3 compact with 7Mpx & 4x optical zoom, my second was another Sony compact (DSC-HX50) with 20Mpx & 20x zoom, the first lens was noticeably better than the second.

I now have a Canon SX740 compact, again 20Mpx but a 30x optical zoom but a much superior lens to the previous 2 Sonys.

All 3 have been in the £200- £300 bracket.

Good evening, David. I like the photo’s of Hambleton South from the 16th August, 1990. In C15265, the class 56, 56076, is hauling an interesting down train. I wonder if the vehicles would have been on their way to York for work on them?

Good evening, David. I like the Didcot photo’s from May, 1979. All are of interest, and in C5421, the GWR, TPO, number 814, which was built in 1940, shows, in the photo’ much detail of the nets, etc., concerned with the pick up and set down of mail from a moving train.

I like the Benton Quarry and Heaton Depot photo’s. In J10611, at Heaton Depot carriage sheds, in January, 1990, the condemned Mk1 stock is accompanied by both some class 101 cars, and also to the left Derby class 108’s, and to the immediate right high density suburban cars - 116?

The 116 cars may have been the ones (or others like them) we had in the photo at Riding Mill a little while ago.

Good evening, David. I like the Northumberland photo’s which are all of interest. In C11605, at Cramlington, with 43041 leading a HST on an up express on the 5th November, 1988, you have captured a most excellent shot of such an iconic train as it passes through the station.

I decided for today to avoid the Class 91s which at the time were the only electrics frequently seen in Northumberland.

 

Other classes did appear now and then and I have a few photos which will appear as and when I get round to them.

Should I have to descend at Cramlington going northwards, I'd definitely want to be on something with power-operated doors.

Minor correction David; In J9163 the DMU is a Class 120.

 

Just two months later Scotland had received its first Sprinters, Class 150 sets at Haymarket (150255, 257, 259, 279, 283, 284 and 285). They were primarily intended for the Edinburgh/Dundee and Edinburgh/Bathgate services. As I was displaced from my job in Glasgow Control at the time, due to a re-organisation, I was given the job of riding the new sets to report on their performance.

Further to the above, one of my Control colleagues, whose railway career started in the late 60s (some years before mine) was given a similar job, in this case riding the then newly-introduced double-headed Class 50 trains between Glasgow and Crewe; Infinitely preferable to my Class 150 sojourn !

Scotland obviously specialised in displacing staff. When I entered Redhill Control in 1968 there were three Scots who had been sent south. A fourth had already not made the grade and was gone. The other three did ok - one went to be DCC at Paddington, one became Special Duties Asst at DMO Croydon, and the third ploughed on in Control doing a fair job.

Good evening, David. I like the Edinburgh photo’s, from August, 1987, which are full of interest. In J9163, at Edinburgh Princes Street Gardens, with hybrid DMU set number 102532 , on an Edinburgh to Dundee service, you can see how there’s just one roof vent left on each of the class 120 power cars. I’m not sure, but I understand that asbestos was not removed from these cars. I cannot think  of any other reason for the removal of most of the roof vents.

Hi David

 

This picture reminded me of one of my father’s pictures.  Not Didcot but Bridgnorth, late 70s if not 1979.  Given I’m on RMweb, I wonder if either of those small children are? I’d have thought a reasonable chance.
